Greetings from the President!

Happy New Year 2017! Well, the worst case scenario has happened. You ask what that could be. Have you ever volunteered to be a chairman of a project? You plan and plan, reserve the location, arrange all the services you need, etc. Well, the week after the winter board meeting our State Convention chairman was notified the 2017 location would be demolished in early 2017. So NO Marten House for the State Convention. What a shock. I received an email from a garden club member who had also heard the notice of destruction. Yes it is true, but we have moved forward. Thanks to Cynthia Wright for working quickly and arranging a new location and services for the April 3-4, 2017 State Convention all within a week’s time of the notice, all while doing her Christmas shopping, and end of year family obligations. Although the train derailed, the train wreck was halted by our Chairman Cynthia. A lot of behind the scenes activities are going on at every level. The National Garden Club, Central Region, and The Garden Club of Indiana all are planning and arranging the new boards for each level of our membership. Please continue your support on all levels. Have an open mind if contacted to be a chairman or to be a part of a committee. Your support and volunteerism is what keeps the organization going year after year. One of the first tentative group activities for TGCI (The Garden Club of Indiana) is the Flower and Patio event in Indianapolis, March 11-19, 2017. I believe last year there were volunteers from every district in the state. Great support! Being located next to the wine booth didn’t hurt either. LOL (laugh out loud) Of course the next big event will be the State Convention in Indianapolis April 3-4, 2017. It is the installation year for Sue Fuhrman who will be installed as your new President for 2017-2019. Please plan on attending to support her and her new board. With Hellos there are also Goodbyes, or at least See Ya Later. As your current President it will be bitter sweet to turn over that Presidential gavel. I have truly enjoyed my time as your State President. Thank you for giving me that opportunity. I will of course stick around to support Sue and her board as I am able. Happy New Year 2017; the adventures begin once again. Blessings to you! Jodi Meyer, President The Garden Club of Indiana

Passport to Gardening Our 2017 Annual Convention Tour (Also known as the Official Call Letter) TGCI Tours was founded over 10 years ago by Past State President, Virginia Jones. Based upon this rich tradition, we are excited to bring you our “Passport to Gardening” on the 2017 Annual Convention Tour starting on April 2nd and lasting until April 4th. We start with three pre-tour offerings. The first is our House of Lords tour (Executive Committee meeting) and the House of Commons (Board of Director's Meeting). As exciting as both of these tours sound, they are limited to the members of TGCI Board. But don't despair; there are plenty of other exciting things to do in the area if you arrive early just ask at the registration desk. Dinner is on your own this evening, but there are a wide variety of different cuisines close by our "tour destination". Our third pre-tour offering is open to all tour attendees - a social hour filled with the latest craze - adult coloring. This is sure to relax you as you prepare for our fast-paced Convention Tour. Come join us, even if you don't want to color and just get to know other tour attendees. All of the day's events will be held at the Holiday Inn Express Fishers located at 9791 North by Northeast Blvd in Fishers, IN. On Monday morning (April 3rd), breakfast is on your own unless you chose the lodging package with the Holiday Inn Express, in which case it is included. We start our tour with a short walk over to the Wellington Conference Center. We will have a day filled with experts giving educational talks during our journey. First will be Holly Lindzy of Salsbery Brothers Landscaping who will be talking about "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of the Bug World". Holly is a native Hoosier and has over 15 years of horticulture experience. She currently is the Garden Center Manager for Salsbery Brothers. Our next tour expert is Dana Altum of Altum's Gardens in Zionsville. Dana is a 2nd generation Garden Center owner and she will be speaking on "The Journey to Successful Gardening". After our morning speakers, lunch will be on your own. When we resume in the afternoon, we will do so with our 2017 Convention Business Meeting. Don't think of this as watching as Congress is filibustering over a bill, instead imagine this as your relaxing day at our own private beach. Dress casually and be comfortable all the while you are learning what your state officers, district directors and chairmen have been doing this past year. This is also a good time to listen to and gather ideas from other clubs. Following this meeting, Amanda Smith from the Hamilton County Parks Department and Rob Ripma from the Audubon Society will be discussing some “Great Travelers - Birds and Hummingbirds”. Next will be a training session for all TGCI members but especially Club Officers. We will be learning about "Presidential Perks, Money Laundering and Who is Robert?". Come join us to learn tricks other clubs have discovered, but also to ask questions that inquiring minds have always wanted to know. Throughout the day, you will have many opportunities to meander through the Turkish Grand Bazaar and do some shopping. Monday evening we will be stopping along the French countryside for our Evening Meal and President's Banquet. While there isn't a dress code, we will be installing our new officers, so you may want to dress either in "Cruise evening attire" or with an outfit that pays homage to our French theme. A "Parade of Presidents" honoring our current club presidents along with their District Directors will start our evening. We also will take this evening to honor our past State Presidents and the incoming Region Director will be presiding over the installation ceremony, as well as, bringing us a short message. Our speaker for the evening is Linda Williams. Linda and her husband, Ron, own Garden Travelers who 7

Call Letter Continued... Tuesday morning (April 4th) has us up and going early. Again, breakfast is on your own unless you chose the lodging option with the Holiday Inn Express. Our speaker this morning will be Kathy Cookerly from the Indianapolis Zoo. Many of us know about the spectacular White River Gardens, but Kathy will be telling us about the “Animal Conservation and Stewardship Programs” in which the Indianapolis Zoo participates. Definitely a program you won't want to miss. Next it is time for our Movie Matinee presentation on our current Land Trust Project with The Indiana Nature Conservancy – The Kankakee Marshes. This is a highly-rated PBS program, “The Everglades of the North: The Story of the Grand Kankakee Marsh”, will really give you details on the area we have committed to helping to save. It reveals the diverse ecology, illustrates the astonishing history, and explores the controversial saga of the Grand Kankakee Marsh in how people have used and perceived this wetland for more than 10,000 years. There will be a break at this point to allow you to check out of your rooms or go shopping one last time at the Grand Bazaar. For lunch, it is a quick stop along the Italian countryside for local cuisine and to hear from the Professors and Scholarship Students. This is one of our most popular highlights of this tour and a great way to conclude the tour. With our “Passport to Gardening” there is luckily no need to get a passport as your TGCI passport is part of your TGCI membership. So come join us as we travel through the world of gardening and enjoy companionship of other gardeners at the same time!

Cynthia Wright and Betty Leverett, Tour Directors Jodi Myer, President of TGCI

Update: Indiana Flower and Patio Show March 11-19, 2017

The new owners of the show have informed us they will extend invitations to non-profits to participate following the close of one of their other shows. We are hopeful we will be notified sometime in February. At that point, a notice will be sent out immediately to the District Directors to forward to each Club President to then inform the club members.

LAND TRUST

NEW PROJECT: NEW CHALLENGE

This chair is happy to report about the new project approved by your state board of directors at the December board meeting. In cooperation with The Nature Conservancy, TGCI once again will join together to raise the funds for the newest project: The Monarch/Butterfly Trail to be established at Kankakee Sands in northern Indiana. As you may recall, The Garden Club of Indiana, Inc. has had a close tie to this land in two other projects. Our first was in acquiring the land to reestablish the native prairie sites and then most recently this past fall as we supported the reintroduction of Bison on the land as part of the “Bison-tennial” project. Both projects in the past were highly successful and we look forward to equal success in this project. What this project will include is the establishment of a butterfly trail supporting a wide variety of native plants serving as both shelter, larval food, and butterfly nectar, therefore supporting the entire life cycle of not only our beloved Monarch, but also many other native butterflies as well. Additionally, there will be educational boards along the trail to aid in providing the public who enjoy this area with a great background of information to understand this tender and threatened ecosystem and interdependence. This certainly ties in closely with the recent efforts of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. as well as President-elect Sue Fuhrman’s own interests and goals. The entire project goal is to raise $10,000. This is not an unusual amount to ask for in the completion of one of our cooperative projects with The Nature Conservancy. While we will set a goal of four years to retire this project, this chair is sending out a challenge to try to do it in three! Here is a special incentive to get the talk spurred within your clubs, around your districts and hopefully even around the dinner table with friends. (In this way, we will dig deep and find the funds to get this project on the move. We KNOW that this is a project of desperate need for our natives, so let’s join together and get it done!) THE CHALLENGE: This chair has found a sponsor who will match “new” dollars-up to a max of $700! What this means: if a club hasn’t donated in the past year and sends in money to Land Trust, every dollar they send in will be matched one to one (up to the max), thereby making this new money doubly valuable! If a club has been faithful and sent in their usual $25 or $50 dollars last year toward land trust, but this year decides to send $35 or $60 that increased difference will be matched one to one. So, there you go…a great challenge. A win-win for everyone involved, and especially for those butterflies who ultimately benefit. You may send your donations to: Sarah Nahmias, Land Trust Chair, 1699 W Shady Lane, Greensburg, IN, 47240. Be sure to make out the check to TGCI and put “Land Trust” on the memo line. A form may be found on the website (gardenclubofindiana.org) helping to indicate whether this is a club, memorial, honorarium, or exactly what type of donation so that appropriate acknowledgement may be forthcoming. Longevity for the Iris Elm Garden Club

In the December issue of Indiana Gardens, Longevity in Gardening was a featured article along with photos of individual members from around the state. This month our club would like to announce the club's longevity. Iris Elm Garden Club of Winamac, Indiana was established in 1930 making it 87 years old in 2017. The club was federated in 1936 and in 2017 it will be part of The Garden Club of Indiana for 81 years. The club has served the state with two (2) State Presidents, six (6) State and National Life Members and three (3) State Life Members. In 2016 the club had four (4) members on the State Board and three (3) members on the North Central District Board. 2017 will prove to be another first for Iris Elm-we have our first male president.

MAKING INDIANA (OUR WORLD) BEAUTIFUL… Each garden club member does her or his part with each lovingly cared for flower or vegetable garden or by adding a pleasant environment or island of calm beauty for the benefit of their community. Each year, the district hosting our state convention is awarded a grant from the World Gardening Project to help with their community efforts. With the relaxed guidelines approved last year, clubs in the district will be able to identify areas of need which may include habitat restoration, water conservation as well as gardening, landscaping and beautification of civic areas or Habitat for Humanity properties. In coming issues, I hope to show pictures of on-going projects of the South West and Central West Districts. As you plan your club's budget for 2017, please consider a contribution to support the World Gardening Project for the benefit of our Hoosier Home.
