FROM THE PRIEST: Fr. Vince

DEL SACERDOTE: El p. Vince

This weekend’s gospel provides a simple question for us to reflect on: do we freely say yes to God’s love at all times? The Pharisees were learned people who knew the 613 precepts of the Torah. They challenged Jesus to see if He really knew the law as they learned it, but Jesus surprised them with a simple summary of the law in two commandments – love of God and love of neighbor. God’s love searches for what is good and life-giving and that is why He begs us to love- to freely and completely give and receive what is good and life-giving not for ourselves but for others. Everything we do flows from His love and He always loves us first, but do we place Him in our lives first above all things? And do we give ourselves freely and completely for the sake of others? This week, ask Our Lord to open our hearts with His love through the Holy Spirit so we can grow in faith, hope and love!

FINANCIAL REPORT

AS PRESENTED AT MASSES OCTOBER 21ST & 22ND This is the financial summary of Corpus Christi and St. Ladislas for the fiscal years 20162017 and our budget for this year. It is our hope to present this information to you on a more regular basis.   Because of the uncertainty in leadership these past few years, our parishes are financially unstable due to a few things: First, there was no budget for the two parishes which led to excessive spending. Second, this spending has led to operating outside of what we bring into our collection, putting us in the negative.   As we look at the financial summary, the offertory income (a stable source of revenue to operate the parish) is below expectations. The amount needed to balance weekly offertory expenses for Corpus Christi is $3,332.00 a week, which is $173,264.00 a year. St. Ladislas’ amount needed to balance weekly offertory expenses is $3,634.00, which is $188,968.00 a year.   For Corpus Christi, we have collected $80,419.00 for the year and for St. Ladislas we have collected $122,231.00.   Many of you may wonder about the line titled “Other” in the revenue section. It has many things in the amount labelled “Other”. Such as: • For Corpus Christi and St. Ladislas, we have an Endowment Grant for Religious Education that is $17,999.00 for both parishes for 2 years. • Corpus Christi also receives revenue from the Clovis Schall Endowment Grant that is $48,073.00 for the past year. Corpus also receives revenue from the cell phone tower since March 31, 2017 that is $22,000.00 for the year ($16,000 initially, with rent at $2,000.00 a month). • Corpus also receives rent from the Dominican Learning Center of $1,020.00 a month, which is $12,240.00 for the year. • Both parishes have received checks from insurance claims; $1,836.96 for Corpus Christi (Burglary from the rectory such as a stolen computer and vandalism) and $9,844.50 for St. Ladislas (Damage from lightning) which is also added to the “other” section in revenue.   On the expense side, we must stress how expenses are divided. In previous years, we have tried to split the expenses 50/50, but it did not work out. Because of this, a few expenses are split 70% to Corpus Christi and 30% to St. Ladislas for the two parishes to operate feasibly.

The “Other” section in expenses for St. Ladislas are normal expenses (such as office supplies/church supplies/rectory expenses since we have a priest living at a rectory). The “Other” section in expenses for Corpus Christi is high because of two expenses. $87,000 was for expenses billed by St. Mary’s this past year. An additional $30,000 was for the purchase and installation of the organ in the balcony.   Regarding loans from the diocese, Corpus Christi does have a loan of $172,128.44 that is in moratorium. St. Ladislas does not have any outstanding loans owed to the diocese.   Fr. Vince has been working diligently in keeping our expenses low and trying to allocate our resources for the best and most responsible use of resources with good stewardship with the help of the finance committee. Currently, our salaries and benefits seem to have increased greatly, but beginning this fiscal year, Fr. Vince has begun reducing this, as he saw that we were overstaffed in certain areas and understaffed in other areas that simply did not need to be, but will increase in the long run. Other things, like utilities, we cannot control as much, (for example, we have had overall mild winters); but you can see how much it costs, which is no small number.   Moving into the future, we have established a budget for next year, which includes milling/paving the front lot and replacing the doors for Corpus Christi; glass window and fence repairs for St. Ladislas. These projects will be costly and hopefully, with your generosity, we are able to cover the expenses.   Fr. Vince has restarted Parish Council and Finance Council, while establishing new committees, such as the Building Maintenance Committee and the Stewardship Committee, so we can be better stewards of our parishes. In addition, the Stewardship Committee is finding other ways to find financial support to assist us with expenses. We hope to work on a proximate and long term plan for the parish, including working to upkeep the parish and look to a long term maintenance plan.   At the same time, we need to be working toward stewardship (our time, talent and treasure), especially increasing our offertory, as it is the main and stable source of income for the parish to continue to operate and continue our mission. We are grateful for our endowment grants; they have helped sustain us in our efforts to make ends meet over the years, but we have to remember that we, as a parish community of faith must continue to work together for the future of our parish, just as those who have gone before us and who have been so generous.   Now we are called to continue to be good stewards of our resources and blessings and continue to plan and work together for the future of Corpus Christi and St. Ladislas. Thank you for your continued generosity.
