Feedback: what do you think of Wattpad? ( self.Luna_Lovewell ) 80

remember me

submitted 1 year ago by Luna_LoveWell Creator

As you may know, I've been writing The Necromancer on Wattpad. At 43 parts, it is coming near the end now, and I am debating starting another story there. This is the story that I am thinking of continuing. I always planned to write more in that universe and just never got around to it.

Some authors have gotten noticed by agents on Wattpad, which is what I've had trouble with in getting Rex Electi published.

Pros to Wattpad (that I can think of) Expands fanbase and gets new readers, which is a must if I'll ever be able to turn this into a living. I'm worried that I may be hitting a ceiling in writingprompts, where most regulars who are interested in subscribing here already have.

Motivates me to regularly add to the story Cons to Wattpad (that I can think of) Not really the demographic that I like writing for. The most popular writers are all writing cheesy knock-offs of 50 Shades of Grey. That makes it more of a struggle to get my story noticed. Not very much fan engagement there.

1. [Prompt Me], a collection of short stories and writing prompts. 2. Rex Electi, an alternate world in which the Roman Empire never falls and chooses the next Emperor based on a series of tests. Here is a big list of all my multi-part stories

Time spent writing on Wattpad is time that I'm not writing elsewhere.

I think you should use whatever platform gets you the most attention. I don't care what you use, so long as it's functional. I'm here for the content (and to see Rex Electi get published!). permalink embed save [–] Luna_LoveWell

I wish I knew what would get the most attention. I really don't know what I'm doing with all of this. permalink embed save parent [–] Riddle-Tom_Riddle 9 points 1 year ago

Would posting on a variety of sites be unfeasible? FictionPress is another you could do at the same time. I don't know how their community is though, as I essentially lurk for a single story there. http://www.reidkemper.com/2010/10/15-websites-where-you-can-post-stories.html Are any of the sites listed there helpful? Maybe just post each on the relevant sites. permalink embed save parent [–] GoldieFox 5 points 1 year ago

My impression of FictionPress is that it's quite dated. It is a huge in developer tools will allow for highlighting, sooo if I can figure out how to make a stylish style that auto-applies that for the entire wattpad site then I won't care at all. (If anyone's reading this and knows how to, help? I've never done this before...) Edit again! add this style into Stylish: @namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml); @-moz-document domain("wattpad.com") { #story-reading .page { -moz-user-select: text !important; } } along with disabling JS, and it'll be great! Last edit - so yeah I'm 100% ok with wattpad permalink embed save parent [–] whitonian 6 points 1 year ago

I downloaded the app just to read the necromancer. I don't mind at all, plus the app advertises other stories I might be interested in in an unobtrusive way. Keep doing whatever works for you! permalink embed save [–] ObeseMcDese 5 points 1 year ago

If you did want to gain more attention you could post on multiple sites by just copy pasting it over. You could then link it here as a main 'hub' for announcements? Well, the idea of posting it exclusively on Wattpad is to maximize the attention it gets there. If I had posted chapters on both Reddit and Wattpad, then no one here would have gone over there to read it and it wouldn't have been able to ever pick up any steam. permalink embed save parent [–] ObeseMcDese 2 points 1 year ago

Well wouldnt you still get more views? But just spread out over platforms. And then when you have a multi site empire you can use one of them as a central hub. But yes doing this would prevent you from topping the specific sites charts regularly permalink embed save parent [–] Luna_LoveWell

But yes doing this would prevent you from topping the specific sites charts regularly Exactly. I get a lot more new readers when my book is #1 on Wattpad. permalink embed save parent [–] sureshotapollo Patreon Supporter! 4 points 1 year ago

Wattpad also isn't very phone friendly. I personally prefer reddit>wattpad permalink embed save [–] Bozzie0 2 points 1 year ago

Really? I find the android app quite nice, actually. Especially with the notifications. The only thing really disappointing about Wattpad is its complete lack of quality content. It's all badly written junk, except for the Necromancer of course! permalink embed save parent [–] Luna_LoveWell

Creator [S] 2 points 1 year ago

Really? I've always heard that mobile formatting is Wattpad's strength. I have the app on my phone for getting notifications and stuff, but I primarily use it on my computer. permalink embed save parent [–] sureshotapollo Patreon Supporter! 2 points 1 year ago

Maybe it's just my phone. When I try to log into my wattpad account it just loads me back to original post without logging on. permalink embed save parent [–] iRawrr 1 point 1 year ago

are you using the wattpad app or just through the browser? (safari, chrome, etc). the mobile web experience could use some work I agree, but I find the app to generally be very fluid. permalink embed save parent [–] sureshotapollo Patreon Supporter! 1 point 1 year ago

I was just using chrome, I'll have to get the app. permalink embed save parent [–] likul-kitty 1 point 1 year ago

I had issues with the app on my phone, it was constantly about four chapters behind. However, if I went through my browser the app fixed itself, but its just as easy to use through the browser so I just do that now. The site does go down quite a bit, frustrating when I know you posted a new chapter and I could read it, but it is still a lot easier to follow than on reddit and I love that I get an email to let me know I have new bits to read permalink embed save parent [–] JmicIV 3 points 1 year ago

Not ordering by votes makes their forums pretty much unusable. It's so incredibly frustrating to read because it just comes out like a stream of consciousness. permalink embed save [–] NecroLove 3 points 1 year ago

I started using Wattpad to follow as you write The Necromancer. I like the layout far better than navigating reddit links. The best part for me is the ability to follow a story or author. As soon as you post a chapter or update I'm notified through my phone. It keeps me engaged in the stories I'm reading. I think that's important when you have multiple projects you're writing and not necessarily on a set schedule. Another likeable aspect is the suggested stories Wattpad shows me. It can be pretty hit or miss sometimes but I've found some good reads because of it. If you continue using it I imagine your popularity would grow as your work is suggested through the app. permalink embed save [–] TheAbyssGazesAlso Patreon Supporter! 6 points 1 year ago

I don't want The Necromancer to end :-( permalink embed save [–] Luna_LoveWell

Creator [S] 5 points 1 year ago

You'll like the epilogue, then. permalink embed save parent [–] TheAbyssGazesAlso Patreon Supporter! 2 points 1 year ago

I doubt it, since it'll be the last time I hear about Winston :-( In fact, I am seriously considering not reading the last chapter, so that the story will not actually ever end for me. (really) permalink embed save parent [–] Ryantific_theory 4 points 1 year ago

That seems so sad. Not that there haven't been stories I wished would never end, but skipping the conclusion crafted by the author doesn't feel like much of a compliment. Also given Luna's response to your post, it sounds like it may be more of an open ended epilogue, where the story continues, just outside of our sight. permalink embed save parent [–] TheAbyssGazesAlso Patreon Supporter! 1 point 1 year ago

Stupid as it probably sounds, Winston and co have helped me though a fairly bad time lately, and the frequent (and awesome) updates have literally kept me going. I'm devastated to hear that the story is almost done (although it was getting pretty obvious that it was about to wind up, of course). I certainly meant no disrespect to Luna! permalink embed save parent [–] Ryantific_theory 3 points 1 year ago

Given that you wanted it to just keep rolling (which I definitely understand), I figured it had a serious impact. And I am glad that it helped with what you're going through, for such a simple thing life can be way harder than it has any right to be. But stories can only grow with us for so long before they're complete. Fortunately, we're lucky enough to experience the next brilliantly written story, which is always something to look forward to. permalink embed save parent [–] TheAbyssGazesAlso Patreon Supporter! 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks! And yeah, I am looking forward to the next one. Just (extremely) sad to be losing Winston... :-/ permalink embed save parent [–] Ryantific_theory 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, after having grown so much, made friends, and acquired the power to accomplish his old dreams, he's nearly complete. It'll be sad to see the end, but at the same time he'll be finished. And there's always the hope for little short stories in the future! permalink embed save parent [–] cobywaan Patreon Supporter! 1 point 1 year ago

Luna has a ton of content with really compelling characters, if you think you will be missing Winston (and haven't read everything else she has written already) then I am sure you can find another great story to dive into. I have a ton of recommendations if you are not familiar permalink embed save parent [–] TheAbyssGazesAlso Patreon Supporter! 2 points 1 year ago

Hi Luna, wattpad has been really good to read the Necromancer on. The email notifications are really good and the its extremely user friendly, especially on smartphone (I find reddit quite clunky on the iphone). I also expanded and read something else on my recommended list (ok it was trash but whatever) and reading lots of text on wattpad to me is a lot easier than reddit (that was on PC btw). I don't know if you have reached peak saturation of Writing Prompts on Reddit. I'm guessing there would be a decent amount of people who would love what you write that have no idea that r/writingprompts even exists. I only found it by total accident when a story appeared on my reddit front page, I'd bet there are lots of other people in the same situation that writing prompts just hasn't reached yet. permalink embed save [–] Ryantific_theory 2 points 1 year ago

I like it! Although I read the first couple chapters without an account, and without realizing that there were portions being cut off the story. Makes it much more convenient to binge on stories than reddit. Edit: Also yes, please continue that story, that's a great story to continue. permalink embed save [–] Kulkanin 2 points 1 year ago

I like wattpad. There is at least 1 more WP writer there, and the app is actually pretty good once you get used to it. permalink embed save [–] SRoFIN 2 points 1 year ago

You're the person who brought me to wattpad. It might not be the most stable platform, or the best, but it should help you get past the roadblock that is publisher. You should keep doing short stories there, but promote them on other sites, such as imgur, to get more promotion. Also part 5, I want it now. permalink embed save [–] Luna_LoveWell

Creator [S] 1 point 1 year ago

I don't honestly know much about sites like imgur. Isn't that just for images, not writing? permalink embed save parent [–] SRoFIN 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, but you can promote your books with nice cover and a short description. That'll do a lot in case of drawing attention. Most likely however they'll downvote you to oblivion and crush every single dream you ever had. permalink embed save parent [–] potentialPizza 1 point 1 year ago

Frankly, I don't think that because I am one of the people who is against imgur on principle. It's excellent as an image host site, and the fact that it has comments and a small (immature) community is just dumb. permalink embed save parent [–] [deleted] 2 points 1 year ago*

The only other place I'd really post it is here on Reddit. I was leading people to Wattpad so that it boosts my rankings there and makes it more visible on Wattpad. permalink embed save parent [–] Tijnoz Patreon Supporter! 2 points 1 year ago

Just want to add my experience in here. I've read your stories since a while back, and started following Patreon when you created it. It was a nice way to give something back, but I didn't like reading there so much. I saw this post today and decided to check out Wattpad, made an account. I really like the app! It was much easier to read a multipart story like this. How and where you should post your stories is a difficult question, and I guess you should experiment with it, maybe not do it one way, but balance your mediums. Cheers! permalink embed save [–] MarcMurray92 2 points 1 year ago

Just happened across this thread after reading a few of your stories, they are brilliant! Real talent there. In regards to somewhere to publish stories, Medium may not be a specifically fiction focused platform but the community is huge and you may reach people you wouldn't on reddit or wattpad. I've seen a couple of short stories do quite well on it. permalink embed save [–] BeneluxTyranny 3 points 1 year ago

I didnt mind it until the day i started to get spam via it. Several messages several times a day from different users telling me id won xyz and to send my details etc I still used it to read your story because im hooked, and I reported the accounts for phishing but i dont think id use it again if im honest permalink embed save [–] Adamnlynch 1 point 1 year ago

Have you thought about Radish? I follow a few stories from other people on there, mainly Psychoalpaca and LeoDuhVinci, and it's a really good format, with a bit of potential to make a tad bit more money off of it, too permalink embed save [–] Mrdsword 1 point 1 year ago

Well the first pro is a lack of a character limit. Reddit was meant to be a Forum, so sharing your stories might get a little hard. Also Wattpad is a good way to "Make it" in writing. It's pretty easy to start standing out against the smut. Plus if you have a presence in multiple places it's more opportunities to get seen, and gather fans. I know you have mentioned hating writing behind a Paywall, but maybe if you used multiple places, you could put the same stories in them. Like say, you write a paywall story and put it on Patreon, then you could also put it on something like Raddish. Then you would have two audiences based on the same stuff. Also there is sort of a "Pay on whichever place you want" aspect. Obviously you should have a lot of stories that only take place in one place, like what you are doing with Necromancer. But you just might not do with places that have a Paywall. I really don't care as long as I keep getting handed stories, because I love your writing. permalink embed save [–] DavidG993 2 points 1 year ago

The character limit is definitely a little annoying once you start getting into any decent amount of length for a story. Still, some have a little more room. r/thefalloutdiaries upped it to 40000 if I remember correctly. permalink embed save parent [–] mad100141 1 point 1 year ago

As of now it seems that posting the stories on wattpad and linking to it from reddit would be a good idea. For those who have difficulty due to not wanting to create an account you can share the tips that another commenter put regarding using a certain email client that allows you to create a quick unconnected email. Or about how opening on a new tab allows them to continue reading without having to create an account. I already have a wattpad so I'd be fine following you wherever. Lead the way boss. Another thing, when you link to wattpad from here you may still want to suggest readers use this site as the main location for comments. The way reddit is set up for comments is superior to wattpads method due to the voting system organizing things. permalink embed save [–] cobywaan Patreon Supporter! 1 point 1 year ago

I've quite liked reading The Necromancer on Wattpad. The interface is great, and the notifications have saved me from missing updates several times. As far as fan engagement, heading over to Reddit after reading the chapter has been working well enough for me. A note on the Wattpad directing people here could also help with that. permalink embed save [–] [deleted] 1 point 1 year ago

I'll read it for sure if it's on Wattpad or here but the format on Wattpad is easier to read permalink embed save [–] herecometheOHs 1 point 1 year ago

Love it. It's a great platform. permalink embed save [–] NoviKey 1 point 1 year ago

Where I'm from, Wattpad is filled with disgusting romance copypastas. Not that I'm saying that my ideas are original either, just that the classic man-brat-meets-hot-chick is an overused trope for 75% of all romance novels on Wattpad. I know this was posted one month ago, but damn does the platform get my blood boiling when I see "romance" & "wattpad" in the same post. Also, I was looking for r/wattpad so I could promote my own work. Am I shameful? Yes. Am I ashamed? I don't feel shame. permalink embed save [–] RianThe666th 1 point 1 year ago

Why not do all your stuff on Reddit and then also post the ones you think are good on watt pad? permalink embed save [–] under_broad_daylight 1 point 1 year ago

I think you should just do what you think is right for you but I really recommend that you should write like a couple bonus chapters or something like a book that will express your ideas as a writer. permalink embed save [–] JunJunTheCreator 1 point 1 year ago

I'm a wattpad user myself and I completely agree with you're saying. It's a good site to get known for sure, but my demographics aren't necessarily what I'm aiming for. A big portion of this site is fan fiction, so a lot of my readers are below 16. I love all the feedback and praise I receive, but I need constructive criticism from a different demographic. permalink embed save [–] Wman555 1 point 1 year ago
