It contains a total of 1358 hadiths., At the end of each hadith narrated in Bulugh al-Maram, al-Hafidh ibn Hajar mentions who collected that hadith originally. The Hadith are generally from Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud, Jami at-Tirmidhi, 'Sunan al-Nasa'i, 'Sunan ibn Majah, Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal and other books of Hadith. Bulugh al-Maram holds a unique distinction in that all the hadith compiled in the book have been the sources for fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) rulings. Among the topic that this book covers are subjects ranging from marriage, business transactions to other more implicit aspect of the religion such as the five pillars. One more distinctive feature, along with others, is that the versions have also been shortened to present just the main purpose of the Hadith according to its classification under the chapter. Because of these preferential qualities, Bulugh Al-Maram has been accepted widely and is among the most sought-after books of Ahadith.

Review: This valuable introductory compilation of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) issues takes the reader by the hand and shows him/her clearly what to do. As the author restricts the discussion to what is most directly derived from the Qur’an and the Sunnah and, therefore, above dispute, this book is valuable both as a work of fiqh and as a collection of sound hadiths. Although there are a number of introductory compilations of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) issues available, this particular work is unique in several ways. First, the author has restricted his bases for fiqh to the Qur’an and the authentic Hadith of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Dr. Abdul-Azeem Badawi has avoided using any of the weak or rejected hadiths that are so often included in other books of fiqh. The author has also restricted his discussion to what is most directly derived from the Qur’an and the Sunnah and, therefore, above dispute. This book is thus valuable both as a work of fiqh and as a collection of sound hadiths. The topics which are dealt with include purity, prayer, fasting, zakah, pilgrimage, marriage, business transactions, permissible and impermissible foods, inheritance, criminal offenses, and jihad -- covering all the major fiqh issues in a Muslim's life. Sharah Mukhtasar al Quduri with Hashiyah Ghulam Mustafa al-Sindhi (The author of the book in question is Mawlana Abu Sa'id Ghulam Mustafa as-Sindhi al-Qasimi. He was the great Pakistani Muhaqqiq and Musnid, who devoted his life to spreading the works of the great Sindhi Masters. He published Sh. Akram Sindhi's Sharh on ibn Hajr's Nuzhah an-Nazr titled "Im'an an-Nazr" as well Allamah Ja'far Bubkani's beneficial Hanafi work titled "Al-Matanah fi al-Marammah an Al-Khizanah". His Hashiyah on Mukhtasar al-Quduri is probably the best available Hashiyah on Quduri, being the perfect aid for a student attempting to understand this important manual. Instead of filling the Hashiyah with detail of little benefit, Mawlana kept the Hashiyah short, yet inclusive of everything important. It was printed years ago in Pakistan, then has been recently re-typeset and printed in Beirut by Dar Ibn Kathir under the title "Sharh Mukhtasar al-Quduri". Book Review: The Fiqh of Worship. The book of al-‘Umdah is an abbreviated book of Fiqh according to the hanbali school of Fiqh (madhhab). The Hanbali school of legal thought was the last of the four major schools of thought to formulate its principles, and built upon the scholarship of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal it has survived and been practised for over a millennium. There were many periods in history when the Hanbalis numbered a handful, although today the school of thought seems to be making a resurgence. From amongst the long line of Hanbali scholars Muwaffaq-al-Din Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Qudama Al Maqdisi is amongst the most famous with his scholastic contributions making an impact on schools other than his own, not only in fiqh but also in aqidah. Having grown up in a religious family devoted to learning, he along with relatives would travel to Baghdad to seek knowledge already having benefitted from the scholars of Damascus (his own city) having moved there from Palestine. A contemporary of Salahuddin, he, along with his relatives took part in the great battle against the Crusaders which saw the end of their barbaric control of Jerusalem. The Hanbali scholar Abdul Qadir ibn Badran discussed the juristic contributions of Ibn Qudama stating that he wrote four major books in Fiqh which served as a curriculum, the first one (Al Umdah) suitable for the absolute beginner and the last one (Al Mughni) qualifying the student as a jurist.

The book Umdah Al Fiqh serves as essential for those who wish to ground themselves in fiqh and grasp the basics. Many Hanbali scholars past and present have attached great importance to Ibn Qudama’s Al Umdah due to its scholastic value, clear layout, simple language, and providence of basic evidences from the Qur’an and Sunnah. He says in his introduction, “I have abridged this book of fiqh as much as I can and shortened it merely to one opinion of the school so that it will serve as a primer for the reader. Thus, he will not be confused as to what is correct because of differing reports and narrations. Some of my brothers [in Islam] asked me to summarize it so as to make it simple for the teachers and to facilitate its memorization for students…” The ease by which the student can encompass all of the major topics of fiqh is facilitated by Ibn Qudama’s method of writing the manual. The chapters begin with a hadith (prophetic tradition) related from the authentic compilations and Ibn Qudama’s discussion is drawn out of that hadith – a method which instills within the reader the importance of hadith as well as encouraging him/her to study the prophetic traditions. It was for reasons such as these that many of the great luminaries from amongst the Hanbalis paid attention to this brief primer. Ibn Taymiyyah undertook its explanation which provides an extremely beneficial analysis of the primer although he did not complete it only reaching the chapter of pilgrimage. However, that which he did complete is extremely beneficial for the student, its depth is realised by the fact that reaching the chapter of pilgrimage took him four volumes! It has been printed by Dar Ibn Taymiyyah (Cairo) and Al Maktabah Al Dhahiriyyah (Damascus). The most well known explanation of the primer is Al Uddah Sharh al Umdah by the faqih (jurist) and muhaddith (traditionalist) Baha’uddeen Abdul Rahman ibn Ibrahim Al Maqdisi. His explanation is a detailed exposition of the Hanbali school of thought crammed with evidences from the Qur’an and Sunnah. Although Al Umdah provides only one position in regards to a legal issue, Al Uddah at many junctures quotes up to three opinions found within the school (as well as the scholars these opinions are ascribed to) whilst occasionally mentioning the opinions of the other Imams, although, this is not an oft occurrence. Some scholars state that Al Uddah is, arguably, an abridged form of Ibn Qudamah’s Al Kafi (the third book in his curriculum) but written as an explanation to Al Umdah. Al Uddah has become somewhat of a norm to be studied alongside Al Umdah, although, it can be confusing for those who are absolute beginners in fiqh, and more specifically, the Hanbali School of thought. Al Uddah has been published by Maktabah Al Qahirah (Cairo) although it contains many errors as well as the verification of hadith being unreliable. A better verification has been provided by the scholar Dr. Abdullah Al Turki and printed by Mu’assasah Al Risalah (in two volumes). Al Umdah also has a few contemporary explanations such as that written by Abdullah ibn Abdul Aziz Al Jibreen, and due to its simplicity, it seems to be more of an appropriate starting point for the beginner than Al Uddah. Such is also the case with Hashiyah ala Umdah Al Fiqh by shaikh Abdullah Aali Bassam which provides explanatory notes that accompany Al Umdah. Al Umdah, being a brief primer in Hanbali fiqh is extremely beneficial for those beginning a new course of study as well as those wanting to go over the basics. The manual consists of short chapters which are very much understandable, and the brevity of the primer leaves the reader thirsty for more. The issues covered within the respective chapters are core points to note, but the intriguing way in which they are presented leaves the reader with deeper questions as if the discussion at hand was intended not only to inform the reader of the legal issue, but to invoke questions deeper into the topic.

Reliance of the traveller and tools of Worshiper (Shafi'i Fiqh)

This is a classic manual of fiqh rulings based on Shafi'i School of jurisprudence and includes original texts from classic works of prominent Muslim scholars such as al Ghazali, al-Nawawi, al Qurtubi, al Dhahabi and others





. It is an

indispensable reference for students researching on rulings on daily life. Also called as Umdat al-Salik [Arabic title], the book is broken into sections dealing with every area of life Shari’a is concerned with– from epistemological questions on “sacred knowledge” to practical legal rulings on marriage, divorce, trade, inheritance, fasting, zakat, etc.

The book was translated by the American Muslim scholar Shaykh Nuh Ha Mim Keller in 1991 and became the first translation of a standard Islamic legal reference in a European language to be certified by the University of Al-Azhar, Cairo, the Muslim world’s oldest institution of higher learning.

CAUTION: Dr. Issam Rajab explained in his lecture on manners of knowledge seekers that this particular translation has some questionable views mentioned in the beginning and at the end (which are added by the translator and are not part of the actual book), Caution may accordingly be taken.

Shaikh Sabiq authored several books but widely recognized for his Fiqh as-Sunnah, a complete manual of Fiqh, that earned him the coveted King Faisal Prize for Islamic Studies in 1994. Al-Hidaya:

Review: According to the Hanafi scholars, Al-Hidayah represents the refined, distilled and authentic version of the legal tradition of their school of thought developed over many centuries. It presents the corpus of Hanafi law in its approved and preferred form and forges an organic link with the other schools of law. This book is considered to be an integral part of education under the hanafi fiqh and education in Islamic law is not complete if this book is not included in the curriculum. Accordingly, each and every madrassah, whatever its affiliation, imparts instruction in Islamic law through al-Hidayah. The book was designed by the author in such a way that it makes a vigorous interaction between teacher and student unavoidable. Each sentence presents a challenge both to the teacher and the taught. In this process, the student acquires a deep knowledge of the issues of fiqh and the methods of reasoning employed by Islamic law. The teacher, on his part, has a unique opportunity, while using the book in the class session, to give full expression to his skills and abilities. It is imporant to note that in the area of Muslim personal law, this book has been the major source relied upon by courts in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. The need for this book, since the day it was written, led to the writing of well over forty commentaries and glosses on it, and this does not include the books written to document its traditions. This is rare not only for Islamic law, but for any field of knowledge. In comparing the Mukhtasar of al-Quduri, the book in which al-Hidayah is based upon, we note the following differences: Al-Quduri has errors that have been corrected in Bidayat al-Mubtadi (the matn, bold text of al-Hidayah - it can be found below) Bidayat al-Mubtadi is based on Quduri but has 25% more text as it includes those rulings that were missed in Quduri Bidayat al-Mubtadi states the rulings in a more comprehensive way so that the rule is clearly understood Bidayat al-Mubtadi is organised in a better way Bidayat al-Mubtadi has a commentary written by the author himself. This commentary is called the Hidayah. This is not the case with al-Quduri.

Minhaj Al-Muslim, or "The Way of a Muslim" is one of the very important Islamic books authored by the great scholar Abu Bakr Jabir Al-Jaza'ri. The author has held the prestige of being a regular lecturer at the Prophet's Mosque in AlMadinah and writing 80 Islamic books. He was less than one year old when his father died. His pious mother nurtured the eminent child in accordance with pure Islamic thought. He learned the whole Qur'an in his youth before he was even twelve years old. Finishing his early education in his home town, he then moved to the capital of Al-Jaza'ir and worked there as a school teacher. It was during this period that he attended the lecturers of 'Allamah At-Tayyab Abu Qir and was enlightened with the light of belief in Tawhid and the Sunnah (way) of Prophet (S). When the French colonization began in 1372 AH (1952 CE), he migrated to Al-Madinah, the city of Prophet (S). King Sa'ud bin 'Abdul-'Aziz was the ruler at that time and Al-Madinah University was being established. Abu Bakr Jabir Al-Jaza'ri first worked as a teacher in AlMadinah, then he joined Al-Madinah University and worked there until his retirement. He also worked as an adviser and helper in some institutes affiliated with the Muslim World League during that time.

Beside the book at hand, other famous books from Sheikh Al-Jaza'ri include 'Ageedah Mu'min or "The Believer's Creed", a selection on the Sirah (biography) of the Prophet (S) entitled Hadha Al-Habib (This is the Beloved) and his Tafsir of the Qur'an entitled Aysar At Tafasir.

The author wrote this book, Minhaj Al-Muslim, at the request of the people of Wahdah', a city in Morocco. They desired such a book that included all of the necessary topics like correct belief, etiquette, manners, worship, business and transactions etc. So the author compiled this book after the incessant struggle of about two years, may Allah reward him and increase his benefit to the True Religion.
