The month of March this year is filled with meaning and purpose for First Presbyterian Church. It begins with the140th Anniversary of the founding of the church in 1873. Our service will begin with the glorious sound of bells, include a special anthem, we will receive new members, and be in communion with each other and with God at the Lord’s Table. This month we will be sending Thea and Bob Houser off on the Presbytery mission trip to the Dominican Republic, where they will be our hands and hearts. Please keep them in your prayers, especially March 15-24. On St. Patrick’s Day, which comes on Sunday, March 17, we will experience the bracing winds of Celtic spirituality in our worship. The month ends at the high point of Easter, which comes early this year, on March 31. I invite you to attend our Lenten Study on the Bible and the Presbyterian Logo, Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 6:59 in the Family Life Center, following dinner at Wednesday Night Live; and also our Holy Week services, beginning on Palm Sunday, March 24; the Maundy Thursday Service, March 28 at 7:00 p.m.; the Easter Sunrise service, March 31, 7:00 a.m., followed by a special breakfast hosted by the Congregational Life Committee, and then Worship at 10:30 a.m.

Between now and that celebration of the resurrection we will experience the Lenten journey together. This month I would like to give over the rest of this Pastor’s letter to my colleague in Grand Island, who makes a connection between what we do in Lent and what the Sandhill Cranes have been doing in this part of the country for millions of years. She writes: “They come, every Lent, converging on the braided river, as they have for eons, somehow carrying in their bodies the memory of this distant oasis. For longer than human memory, the icy-weaving river has been a place of rest and nurture. Soon, they will leap free of the brown river-lands, bills skyward and throats open, heading for their nesting places in the far north. But now, they are our guests -- or perhaps we are their guests! We live at the epicenter of their wondrous migration, the hourglass laid over the continent. The cranes and the thousands of other ducks and geese and smaller birds who fill our skies with ragged Vs and fill our ears with the wild bird calls are a reminder of time passing, of purposeful journeys, of times for rest and nurture, of strength in community. Perhaps it is no accident that they come to us in this season of Lent. “Lent is a time to nurture our spirits. It is a time to journey closer to God as we journey with Jesus to Jerusalem. It is a time to draw strength in community and to discover our connectedness to one another and to God. Could the return of the cranes be a Divine reminder of our need to return to God? We journey together (no crane travels alone). We take time to be nurtured and strengthened for our journey. It is God who guides us, often in ways beyond our understanding. Holy Week and Easter are the epicenter of our spiritual journey -- the place where we stop and remember who we are and whose we are.” Have a Good Lent! Stephen

PACK WELL During Lent, as we focus on Christ’s journey to the cross, let’s also examine the journey of our lives. The first task when leaving on any adventure is packing. What have you placed in your bag? Are you weighted down with temptations, self-doubt, money worries, relationship troubles? Have you overlooked any important items? Maybe your bag feels too empty for the challenges ahead. Remember to pack mercy, grace and forgiveness. Thanks to Easter, we know that our journey in Christ continues, even when the road becomes difficult. So as you prepare for Lent, carry with you the hope made possible by Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf.

ALL IN THE CHURCH FAMILY Congratulations: Worship & Music Committee’s recognition for special services to our congregation for MARCH is the Finance Committee members (Steve Case, Moderator, Jon Abegglen, Doug Giles, Peggi Jenkins, Charlie Pickens, Earl Rademacher, and staff resource members Rev. Thank Yous: Dear Church Family, Thank you for the flowers, cards, visits and prayers following my surgery on both knees. I am temporarily sidelined but will soon be back in the game! Vern Plambeck To My Kearney Church Family, Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for the many acts of kindness you have shown me through your words of sympathy and cards I have received following the death of both my father and mother over the past month. I so appreciated the loan of the church’s video camera to record my mother’s service as neither of my daughters could return from California. Thank you, Rose, for coming to our rescue! Your friendship is a treasured gift and I know your continued support will help get me through this very difficult time. God Bless You! Susan Wallace To First Presbyterian Church members, Thank you for remembering Phil and me following the recent loss of my mother. Each card with its special message reminded us how thoughtful and caring each of you are. Fia Feese To Our Dear Church Family, A grateful “Thank You” to all the friends who have wished Elmer and me well, prayed, sent cards, flowers and held us close during his illness and recovery. Remarkable, amazing, wonderful are the words to describe the recovery. We will never forget Rev. Stephen who sat with us in the ER, Mary Jo, Joan, Julie and other who came to Good Samaritan to support us. We will be at home continuing the healing process. You, our family and neighbors have meant much to us. God’s blessings on you all. With love, Elmer & Margaret Holzrichter

CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS A NOTE FROM THE REV. JOHN F. WELLS, JR., PASTOR Author of The First Hundred Years…A History of the First United Presbyterian Church (1973) The year 2013 marks the 140th anniversary of First Presbyterian Church of Kearney, Nebraska, which was chartered on March 2, 1873. One of the ways we are commemorating our congregation’s 140 years of service is to place an excerpt from Rev. Well’s book in each issue of the Chimes in 2013. Copies of this informative congregational history can be found in the church library. This month’s excerpt is also an honor roll (p. 23) of the 7 charter members gathered by the organizing pastor, the Rev. Nahum Gould, in the presence of the Rev. N.C. Robinson, Presbyterial Missionary for the Presbyteries of Omaha, Nebraska City, and Council Bluffs, on March 2, 1873, at a meeting held in the hall of the Kearney Junction Times Building, then located at the northeast intersection of 24 th Street and 5th Avenue. The following people were received by letters of dismission and recommendation: 1. Mr. Roswell D. Gould, (1847-1913), from the Presbyterian Church of Somanauk, Ill. (son of Nahum Gould). 2. Mrs. Mary Louise Greenman, (1836-1923), from the M. E. Church of Storm Lake, Iowa (daughter of Nahum Gould and second wife of Curtis Greenman). 3. Mr. Edward N. Lord, from the Presbyterian Church of Somanauk, Ill. 4. Mrs. Anna M. Smith, from the Presbyterian Church of Geneseo, Ill. (A soldier’s widow). 5. Miss Emma Smith, from the Presbyterian Church of Logansport, Indiana. 6. Mr. L. B. Cunningham, from the Presbyterian Church of Unionville, Iowa. 7. Miss Emma Lillian Greenman, (1858-1945), step-daughter of Mrs. Mary L. Greenman and thereby granddaughter of Nahum Gould, was received upon baptism and profession of faith. Later she became Mrs. T. N. Hartzell and was the last of the charter members when she died in 1945. Rev. Wells goes on to record (P. 24): “Following this organization of the church, the congregation had a very precarious existence. The congregation met in private homes, in the dusty room of some hotel, in the Times Building, in saloons, or in the open air on planks resting on nail kegs. Miss Fannie Nevius, Kearney’s first licensed school teacher, was also using borrowed facilities—frequently the same Times Building—despite the clatter of the presses upstairs. Later that year the first school house was built for $2,200, and our congregation sometimes met there. “ “BUILDING WHERE OUR CHURCH WAS ORGANIZED IN 1873.”

Taize Worship Service Sunday, March 10, 2013 - 7:00 p.m. A TAIZE Worship Service will be held the Second Sunday of each month The TAIZE Community was first developed in Taize, France by Brother Roger Shutz in the 1940’s with an ecumenical group of church people from all over the world. It is from this community that TAIZE worship has come. Our faith begins and ends in worship; yet so often our worship can be submerged in a welter of instruction, edification and moral exhortation. In many churches on a Sunday morning there is little opportunity for corporate quiet, for reflection, for focusing in on the God who speaks to us in the silence of our hearts. The great contribution made by the TAIZE Community has been the popularization of a more contemplative approach to worship.

TAIZE worship includes candlelight, prayers, readings, soft music, and silence. The service is very meditative and offers a wonderful opportunity to be silent and center on the Lord. The service is open to the entire community. Come as you are – and bring your friends.
