The borough of St. Laurent’s engineers have concluded tests conducted along with Polytechnique Montréal Engineering students on a power-supplying wind turbine at Philippe-Laheurte Park. Numerous larger wind turbines can be seen by Montrealers who travel south of Kahnawake. The wind turbines in St. Laurent supplied power to four lampposts. “The purpose of this first step was to ensure the functionality of the physical assembly of the wind turbine,” says a borough announcement. “Other tests will be carried out in 2018 to evaluate its electrical operations. Removed for the winter, the wind turbine will be reassessed and tweaked by the students to make a few improvements to the final product, which will be reinstalled in 2018.”
The long-term goal of the project is to have wind turbines operating at several Montreal island parks, “while positioning St. Laurent as one of the municipal leaders in sustainable development.” “This project, which is part of the Plan local de réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre 2016-2020 (the local plan for 2016-2020 to reduce green house gas emissions), meets several environmental objectives, including resilience to climate change, and also educational ones, by providing students with concrete learning tools,” stated Mayor Alan DeSousa.
