FLASHBACK: "If they could see you now, out on a Fun Ship cruise..."
With news this week that Kathie Lee Gifford's Gifft Wine will be available on Carnival Cruise Line ships (http://www.travelpulse.com/news/cruise/welcome-back-carnival-to-carry-kathie-lee-giffordswines.html ), it got us thinking about Kathie Lee's previous relationship with Carnival. She served as Godmother for two ships, the Celebration in 1987 and the Elation in 1991, but it's probably safe to say that most people remember her time with Carnival for the commercials. To be honest, even though I made a living working on those (and lots of other) commercials made in Miami, I hated them. Kathy Lee was a great choice as Carnival's spokesperson/singer for her perky wholesomeness and broad appeal, which held little for me personally. Those commercials were landmarks in travel advertising and Ted Arison milked them for all they were worth. Simon, if you held a gun to my head and said I had to pick one, I'd say "Ain't We Got Fun" since it's derivative drivel isn't about how I'm going to look to my neighbors when I get home bleary-eyed and sunburned from my cruise. Here's a shot I took of Carnival's first ships at the Port of Miami during the Kathy Lee days.

I do remember the commercials, my first cruise was a Carnival,cruise on the Jubalee in 1995. My favorite was ain't we got fun.

Yes, I remember the commercials. Carnival was also the first, second & third cruise we took back in the 80s. Our kids loved cruising and it cost next to nothing to take them with us. We just paid $99 for their airfare. What a great way to travel!
