If I am carrying 10,000 USD cash or equivalent in Euro and I declare the amount at customs, Is there a fee/charge that I will have to pay at customs? What hppens next? Do they simply let you go or is there a stipulation that you will have to exchange the currency within the airport?

In addition, one can carry up to Rs 5000 in Indian Rupees while traveling to or from countries other than Nepal and Bhutan. There is no limit for these two countries. There is no fee or charge for carrying foreign currency into India while coming from abroad and neither a stipulation to convert the foreign currency at airport. You can convert as and when and where you need to . Edited: 10:29 pm, February 26, 2015

If you are carrying only USD 10K or equivalent, then you don't have to declare.

@brave1, the limit of Rs.25,000/- is for passengers normally resident of India who are returning from a visit abroad or going out of India and it's for Indian currency.

The Rs 25,000 rule applies to all but citizens of Bangladesh and Pakistan as per this circular below. The circulars are contradictory in content. However, as per my experience they normally do not harass anyone for bringing in INR unless its an absurd amount.

@brave1, you are right. By the above mentioned circular Rs.25,000 applies to all except from Bangladesh and Pakistan. Thanks for clarifying it.

The duty free limit for carrying goods into India varies based on certain factors. It is best if you go through the Baggage Rules yourself and see which category you fall under to know the duty free limit for that category.

The duty free limit for import of alcoholic spirits and wine into India is 2 liters. Beyond that you have to pay a very high rate of customs duty.
