From an Antique Land. An Introduction to Ancient Near Eastern Literature. Edited by Carl S. Ehrlich (Rowman & Littlefield, $80). After an introductory chapter by the editor, chapters are devoted to the extant literature of the Sumerians, Egyptians, Akkadians, Hittites, Canaanites, Israelites, and Arameans. This is a very handy companion to Ancient Near Eastern Texts Relating to the Old Testament and the three-volume The Context of Scripture, the two great modern collections of texts recovered through archaeology. The first third of each chapter is an introduction to the culture that produced the literature, and the final two thirds describes various literary types from that culture. Readers who want to glean insights from this literature for the Old Testament may find more useful Kenton Sparks, Ancient Texts for the Study of the Hebrew Bible. Ralph W. Klein
