from Rob Etgen, director One of the biggest parenting lessons I have learned is that kids thrive on routine—at least my kids do. One of our family routines is that on Tuesdays when I pick up our three year old Rosie from daycare we go on an “adventure.” In Rosie’s world, an adventure is a 30- to 60-minute ramble in a park or on a trail where we turn over stones looking for bugs, pretend there are trolls hiding in dark places, or collect treasure—unique rocks or shells to bring home for Mommy. Lately our favorite adventure places are the Cross Island Trail on Kent Island, the long entrance road to the Chesapeake Bay Exploration Center in Grasonville, or a forested twist in our neighborhood road “where Mr. Fox lives.” At Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, we are committed to providing public access to open space including parks, farms, hiking trails, urban gardens, the Chesapeake Bay, and other parts of the Eastern Shore’s rich heritage. This year alone we have been working on a new park and trail system at Easton Point – a former dump on Easton’s waterfront; a new Stevensville park with a pedestrian/bicycle bridge over U.S. 50 that would eventually connect the Cross Island Trail with the South County Trail; and several other parks and trails in Cambridge, Centreville, East New Market and other towns. All of these new projects are in our towns and communities and are located where people will bump into them as part of their everyday routines. We believe this is key to reconnecting our kids with nature and the heritage of the Eastern Shore. I got into this work almost 30 years ago because I loved nature, the Eastern Shore, being outside, and going on my own adventures as a young, single guy with a yellow lab in the front seat of my truck. I love it that my kids are picking up on that same passion, and that our work at Eastern Shore Land Conservancy is making it possible in our towns and communities—and on our way to and from work and school.

Happy holidays all!

Committed to preserving and sustaining the vibrant communities of the Eastern Shore and the lands and waters that connect them.

ESLC and the City of

about Towns

Cambridge brought together residents to design a better Cambridge Gateway.

As the City of Cambridge prepares to celebrate its 330th year in 2014, its

downtown is experiencing a renaissance. The galleries, dining and shopping experiences are abundant, and the rich history of Cambridge is preserved in museums, historic architecture, and in the culture. Still, this city on the Choptank River struggles to attract people off of the bustle of the neondotted U.S. Route 50. The Cambridge Comprehensive Plan and Economic Development Strategic Plan call for revitalized “gateways” into the downtown. Eastern Shore Land Conservancy partnered with the City of Cambridge to help design the first of these Cambridge Gateways, along Maryland Avenue. Route 50 travelers encounter Maryland Avenue at the first stoplight off of the Frederick Malkus Bridge. Currently indistinguishable in character from the rest of the Route 50 corridor, someone unfamiliar with Cambridge would have no clear understanding that a beautiful, historic waterfront town exists just a few blocks away. ESLC and the City held a series of public meetings and workshops to inspire residents and public officials to envision a design for Maryland Avenue that would attract tourists and residents. Community members said they wanted to make Maryland Avenue more accessible to cyclists and pedestrians. To that end, ESLC worked with the City to install temporary bike lane markings and signage both to encourage cycling and to make it safer to cycle alongside motorists. Other design guidance from residents included the desires to showcase local culture, including a connection to nature and a love of history; to give recognition to the City’s traditional careers and industries, including waterman and the former canneries; and to beautify the street, including preserving and accentuating historic housing and the Cambridge Creek Bridge. Design students from University of Maryland College Park, Maryland Institute College of Art, University of Minnesota, Portland State University, and Syracuse University developed concepts based on the community’s desires for Maryland Avenue and worked with these ideas to design several possible design concepts. ESLC chose the best of those proposals and delivered to the City of Cambridge a final report, available at www.eslc.org, that the Cambridge City Council unanimously adopted as the guiding document for a revitalization project on Maryland Avenue. It is this kind of collaboration and assistance to our towns that can help keep our towns healthy, attractive places to live, work and play.

Outdoor Fun and Learning Continues at Sassafras Environmental Education Center

SEEC hosted more than 1,000 parents, students, and teachers in 2013.

The Sassafras Environmental Education Center, under the leadership of Wayne Gilchrest, expanded grades served last year from 3rd and 8th grades to include 4th and 9th graders. Starting in October 2012, SEEC began managing 4.5 acres of agricultural lands at Turners Creek to pilot a project exemplifying farming compatible with local ecology. This area was hand-sewn with winter cover crops using volunteer help from student classes. A regular calendar of youth and public engagement activities included a Fall festival, night hikes, canoe paddles, education walks, poetry and storytelling sessions, and presence at key events outside in the community.

Outdoor education can enhance learning across disciplines such as science, math, social sciences, language arts, music, and art.
