GMAT Tip of the Week: Learning to detect a clearly wrong answer choice on the GMAT can sometimes be just as valuable as zeroing in on a few potentially right answers. When it comes to GMAT reading comprehension questions, a common wrong answer choice that you’re likely to encounter is one that includes categorical statements. In other words, on GMAT RC questions, avoid answer choices that make definitive, categorical statements. Categorical statements are strong and specific in nature and contain words like: all always never etc. Categorical statements tend to pigeonhole the author and leave little room for discussion or nuance, and therefore they often appear in wrong answer choices. On GMAT reading comprehension questions, then, strong and specific answer choices tend to be incorrect, while seemingly “wimpy” answer choices are more often correct.
