PANORÁMICA DE LA LITURGIA DE ESTE MES Las lecturas del mes de agosto, en Tiempo Ordinario, nos invitan a pensar en nuestra vida cotidiana, en nuestras relaciones con los demás y en nuestros trabajos como una extraordinaria oportunidad de encontrar a Dios en todo lo que nos rodea. Como siempre, los mensajes de los evangelios nos invitan a buscar a Dios en la vida y en los momentos más sencillos, a abrazar a todos como nuestros hermanos y hermanas, como hijos de Dios y en una verdadera fe que se vive en comunidad. Agosto es un mes lleno de celebraciones marianas y patronales. A principios de este mes, es especialmente importante la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, Patrona de Costa Rica y también de una de las primeras ciudades de California: El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles, que hoy conocemos Como la gran ciudad de Los Ángeles. La Asunción de María, a mediados del mes, es también el momento de celebración de muchas otras devociones como Nuestra Señora de Copacabana, Nuestra Señora de las Nieves y Nuestra Señora del Cabo. Estos son seguidos, el 22 de agosto, por el Memorial de la Reina de la Santísima Virgen María. Este mes también tenemos varias fiestas importantes para América Latina, como Santo Domingo de Guzmán, Santa Rosa de Lima y el Beato Oscar Romero; Y conmemoramos a los Mártires Claretianos de la Asunción, comunidad del seminario de Barbastro, España, que dieron su vida por la fe en 1936. CURIOSIDADES ¿Sabia usted por qué en su gran mayoría los aviones de pasajeros son blancos? Los aviones no comienzan siendo blancos. Cuando salen de fabrica tienen un tono metálico, pero las aerolíneas gastan alrededor de 250 litros de pintura en dar a cada aeronave su color definitivo. Se usa el blanco por razones de la radiación solar, entre muchas otras razones. El color blanco es así precisamente porque refleja todas las longitudes de onda de la luz visible. La pintura funciona un poco como si fuese una crema de protección solar, al reflejar toda la luz del sol, el avión se calienta menos, y la aerolínea no tiene que gastar tanta energía en mantener el interior fresco. En definitiva, pintar los aviones de blanco es más barato en términos de aire acondicionado. Hay una segunda razón para usar pintura blanca o de colores claros. Muchas partes de los aviones modernos, como el morro, no son metálicos, sino que están fabricados en polímeros compuestos como la fibra de carbono o fibra de vidrio. Esos materiales sufren más desgaste con la radiación solar. Pintarlos blanco ayuda a reducir ese desgaste. Por supuesto, hay algunos aerolíneas que pintan sus aviones en vivos colores para distinguirlos del resto. No hay nada de malo en esa práctica, pero es mucho mas cara. Los pigmentos de la pintura de colores se degradan con más facilidad que la blanca al recibir radiación ultravioleta del sol. Hay algunas aerolíneas que dejan sus aviones sin pintar (con el fuselaje metálico a la vista) y solo los decoran con los colores corporativos en algunos puntos. La razón es el peso. Decíamos arriba que pintar un avión supone añadirle 250 kilos de peso encima. Dejarlos sin pintar permite ahorrar combustible en cada vuelo. La cara oculta de esta practica es que al no pintarlo, el fuselaje sufre más desgaste y hay que pulirlo más frecuentemente. Algunas aerolíneas logran compensar el costo, y otras prefieren no molestarse en asumir esos costos de operación. Por último pintar un avión de blanco también tiene la ventaja en cuanto a la visibilidad, no ya en el aire, sino del propio fuselaje. Es más fácil encontrar problemas estructurales en un avión blanco durante un revisión rutinaria que si es de otro color. Finalmente, es más difícil vender aviones de colores que blancos. Las compañías aéreas a menudo equilibran sus cuentas vendiendo o alquilando de su flota que no usan. Un avión pintado en otro color que no sea blanco obliga al comprador a repintarlo, lo que influye negativamente en su precio de venta, solo pensemos que pintar un avión va desde los $50,000.00 a los $200,000.00.

THIS MONTH’S LITURGY AT A GLANCE The readings for the month of August, in Ordinary Time, invite us to think about our daily life, our relationships with others, and in our jobs as an extraordinary opportunity to encounter God in everything that surrounds us. As always, the messages of the gospels invite us to seek God in life and in the simplest moments, to embrace everyone as our brothers and sisters, as children of God, and in a true faith that is lived in community. August is a month filled with Marian and patron celebrations. At the beginning of this month, it is particularly important the feast of Our Lady of the Angels, Patroness of Costa Rica and also of one of the first cities in California: El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles, which today we know as the great city of Los Angeles. The Assumption of Mary, in the middle of the month, is also the moment of celebration of many other devotions such as Our Lady of Copacabana, Our Lady of the Snows, and Our Lady of the Cape. These are followed, on August 22nd, by the Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This month we also have several major feasts for Latin America, such as Saint Dominic de Guzman, Saint Rose of Lima, and Blessed Oscar Romero; and we commemorate the Claretian Martyrs of the Assumption, the community of the seminary in Barbastro, Spain, that gave their lives for the faith in 1936. CURIOSITIES Do you know why the majority of passenger planes are white? The planes do not start out white. When they leave the factory, they have a metallic tone, but airlines spend about 250 liters of paint to give each aircraft its final color. White is used for reasons of solar radiation, among many other reasons. The color white is used precisely because it reflects all the wavelengths of visible light. The paint works a bit like sunscreen, reflecting all the sunlight, the plane heats less, and the airline does not have to spend as much energy in keeping the interior cool. In short, painting the planes white is cheaper in terms of air conditioning. There is a second reason to use white paint or light colors. Many parts of a modern aircraft, such as the nose, are not metallic, but are made of composite polymers such as carbon fiber or glass fiber. These materials suffer more wear and tear with solar radiation. Painting them white helps reduce that wear and tear. Of course, there are some airlines that paint their planes in bright colors to distinguish them from the rest. There is nothing wrong with that practice, but it is much more expensive. Colored paint pigments degrade more easily than white pigments when they receive ultraviolet radiation from the sun. There are some airlines that leave their planes unpainted (with the metallic fuselage in sight) and only decorate them with the corporate colors in some points. The reason for this is the weight of the plane. As mentioned above, painting an airplane means adding 250 kilos of weight to it. Leaving them unpainted saves fuel on each flight. The hidden side of this practice is that by not painting it, the fuselage suffers more wear and has to be polished more frequently. Some airlines manage to offset the cost, and others prefer not to bother to assume those operating costs. Finally, painting a white plane also has the advantage in terms of visibility, not in the air, but in the fuselage itself. It is easier to find structural problems in a white plane during a routine review than if it is of another color. Finally, it is more difficult to sell colored planes than white ones. Airlines often balance their accounts by selling or leasing their fleet that they do not use. A plane painted in a different color that is not white forces the buyer to repaint it, which has a negative influence on its sales price, just think that painting a plane can go from $50,000.00 to $200,000.00.
