The study of ancient Greek will introduce you to an exciting world of written texts: plays and poems, philosophy, history, and religion, inscriptions, novels, medical texts, and so much more. Instructor:

Consultation with instructor: You can drop by during office hours without appointment; you can also drop by at other times and if I am not busy I will help you. You can ask for an appointment. You can leave a message for me, or write out your question, and leave it in the plastic box beside my door. I will write an answer on it and leave it for you to pick up within a day or two usually. You can use email; if you can’t use a Greek font, just approximate.

Outcomes The student who successfully completes this course by doing the assigned homework and tests should be able to: 1. read Greek prose at an elementary level 2. translate from English into Greek at an elementary level 2. demonstrate an understanding of the structure of Greek in particular, and language in general 3. learning other languages, especially European languages, more effectively 4. demonstrate some understanding scientific and legal terminology 5. recognise selected aspects of the history and culture of the Greek world

COURSE OUTLINE

Chapters to be covered: Introduction and Chapters 1α - 8β.

Course requirements: Set aside at least 8 hours per week. You must hand in the assigned exercises and translations from each chapter. and in addition be prepared to demonstrate (i.e. show me) that you have done the self-correcting material for each chapter.

Where I ask that you read material aloud, you may do record this, or read to me in my office.

Course tests: 1. Practice test - 2β. This test will not count towards your final grade. It is designed to give you some idea of what the tests will include. 2.

Test - 4β; includes ALL material from Introduction and earlier chapters. You may take this test ONLY after you have completed and handed in all the work up to the end of 4β. 30%

Test - 6β; includes ALL material from Introduction and earlier chapters. You may take this test ONLY after you have completed and handed in all the work up to the end of 6β. 30%

4.

Final - 8β; includes ALL material from Introduction and earlier chapters. This exam will take place during the final exam period. I will expect you to have completed and handed in all the work to the end of 8β. 40%

Test contents: tests and final will usually include the following material: Vocabulary drill: Greek to English English to Greek Grammar drill: demonstrating the ability to decline nouns, conjugate verbs English to Greek translating short sentences to demonstrate understanding of grammatical structure Greek to English one short passage from the stories that you have done one longer passage you have not seen

Course materials: You can buy the course texts from the bookstore. Also, you should pick up from the instructor the following additional material:

1. Commentaries on each chapter of the text, which will include an answer key to part of the exercises in each chapter of the text (no cost) 2. Vocabulary drill from Centaur Systems ($10.00) 3. Grammar and vocabulary summaries (no cost) 4. CD: oral component for Athenaze I

Work schedule: Aim to complete the work according to the following schedule: Week 1 Jan 4. Introduction (i - xiii) Chapter 1 (parts α and β) 2 Jan.11 Chapter 2 (parts α and β); Practice Test 3 Jan. 18 Chapter 3 (part α and β) 4 Jan. 25 Chapter 4 (part α) 5 Feb. 1 Chapter 4 (part β); First Test 6 Feb. 8 Chapter 5 (part α)
