Guided Reading Lesson Plan Grade: 4th Subject: Reading Objective: The student will read the story ABC Volunteer and be able to sequence the events in the story. The students will also be predicting what will happen next based on known events. TEKS: b.6.a: sequence and summarize the plot's main events and explain their influence on future events Rationale: Sequencing is an important skill to help students organize their thoughts and information in all curriculum areas. Materials: Teacher MaterialsBook, ABC Volunteer Comic strip example White paper Student Materials – Book, ABC Volunteer Colored pencils Pencil Procedure: Before Reading (5 minutes) Building Background Knowledge – Ask the students if they know a sequence is or what sequencing means. Tell the students that a sequence is an order of events or objects. Tell the students, “this morning I woke up at 5:30, got dressed, ate breakfast, brushed my teeth and then went to school.” Explain to the students that that was my morning’s sequence of events. Set the Purpose for Reading- Tell the students that we will be reading the story of the ABC Volunteer and identifying the sequence of events. Teach the Objective - Tell the students that we’re going to read this story together and summarize each chapter. Then once we’re done reading the entire story, we will use a First, Next, Last chart to explain the sequence of events in the story. Finally, after agreeing on the sequence of events, the students will use a three-box comic strip to illustrate the sequence of events in the story. Model the Objective- Ask the students to share their morning’s sequence of events and write them down on the board in a First, Next, Last format. During Reading- (15 minutes) Ask students the following questions: Chapter one: Why didn’t Jenny want to go to the after-school program? What was the new activity called and what do you do? Chapter two: Why was Jenny nervous to meet her student? Chapter three: On page 11, what does the word “advanced” mean? Chapter four: Regarding Roberto’s letter to Jenny, what gift did Jenny give to Roberto? Have the students take notes on each chapter about events that happen. Post Reading (10 minutes) Reinforcement of Purpose – Ask the students, “Who can name three main events from the story?” Have the students fill out a First, Next, Last chart for the main events of the story. Independent Practice- Ask students to illustrate a comic strip that retell the story using three main events. Closure -Today we learned a fun way to sequence events that happen in a story. It is important because readers need to identify main events in order to be able understand the story as a whole. Assessment Assessment Tools: The student’s final product will be used to assess student’s learning. Quality Standards: Because the students work together to find the three main events of the story, all three comic boxes must represent a main event from the story. Planned Modifications – Lauren needs help reading the story so I will have her sit closest to me and follow along with her as she reads.
