Walk to Cure Diabetes 2017 saw three very successful Walk to Cure Diabetes events in Hamilton, Brantford and the Niagara Region, bringing many families and corporations together for a day of fun, networking and of course raising funds for T1D research. Many thanks must also go to each donor, sponsor and again, to our amazing volunteers who go above and beyond to create an enjoyable event for everyone. The 2018 Walk dates will be announced soon, but it is never too late to call and volunteer to help with these events. We need many volunteers, in various areas from recruiting walkers, securing donations of product and services that we need to run the events, and of course, many event day volunteers are needed in registration, incentive prize hand out, BBQ and refreshment areas, rest stop and along the route. Maybe your child was diagnosed since the walk in 2017, and you are looking for a way to get involved and meet other families with children with T1D? Call the JDRF Office at 905.664.1432 or email Anne Martin at [email protected] and find out how you can get involved in this very family friendly event in 2018.

Mentor Program Your child has just been diagnosed with diabetes – what do you do now? When a loved one is diagnosed with diabetes, it can be a traumatic and stressful time. Fear, sadness, anger, and confusion about how to manage the disease can leave families feeling alone and overwhelmed. You are not alone – JDRF's Mentor Program Volunteers can help. The Mentor Program can provide much needed emotional support, information about diabetes resources, education about what families can do to help find a cure, and most of all, be a good listener. JDRF's Family Network is free of charge, and we are here to help as long as you need it. Please note: our volunteers are not healthcare professionals, and are unable to provide specific medical advice, for which you should contact your doctor or other healthcare professional. If you would like information about the Mentor Program, please contact Anne Martin at 905.664.1432/1.866.602.6662 or email [email protected].

Volunteers Wanted Whether it's the Walk to Cure Diabetes, the Revolution Ride to Defeat Diabetes, or any other JDRF event that takes place during the year, they all require a considerable amount of volunteer help. This help can be pre-event, working on one of many committees involving recruitment of participants, solicitation of sponsorships for items and services, or day-of-event duties such as registration, route supervision, kids activities, barbecue/refreshment area, etc. For information on the many volunteer opportunities available, please contact Anne Martin at 905.664.1432/1.866.602.6662 or email [email protected]. Volunteers are the backbone of JDRF and their support is truly appreciated!
