Have You Heard?… by Maria Ibâñez / April 22, 2013 Greetings, busy, busy week ahead….starting with Earth Day shows today and continuing with magical tales, the week will culminate on Saturday at the International Storytelling Festival with a day full of bilingual tales. I am very much looking forward to this event. Congratulations go to my friend Rocco for being on the cover of this month’s Linking Ring magazine. He truly is one of my all time favorite performers. Best to you always my friend. Summer is almost here but you would not think so by looking out the window. Days have been dark and rainy and cool in the afternoon and evenings. Have You Heard?… by Maria Ibâñez / April 15, 2013 Greetings, this past Friday marked my 34 th year as a professional magician; the magic carpet ride has been quite an adventure and it has been all the more special for the privilege of having shared the ride with you, my friends and readers. A friend of our sons from the time of elementary school whisked us off to celebrate the magic anniversary at the most magical place on earth, Disney World. It was a very short weekend as we were only able to get away for a day but it was a very special trip as we were able to spend time with my Godparents, Clem and Jean and also had an opportunity to spend some time with our friend Terry Ward, the fantastic street magician at Hollywood Studios, always a pleasure to see him perform. Reality set back in yesterday afternoon when we returned home, can’t get away too often or too long due to the rocky health issues with both our moms. Now to finish the last minute work on the presentation for next week’s International Storytelling Festival at which I will be telling. The event will be Saturday, April 27 from 10:00-4:00 at the Main Library, Downtown Miami. Any of you who will be in the area please do stop by and say hello, it is a community event which is free to the public and which features all types of booths and interesting cultural events. La realidad se impuso de nuevo en la tarde de ayer cuando volvimos a casa, no podemos alejarnos demasiado a menudo o por mucho tiempo debido a los problemas de salud rocosas con nuestras dos mamás. (photo from Mr. Reveen’s website) Peter J. Reveen (born 1935 in Adelaide, Australia – Died 8 Apr 2013) was a stage hypnotist and illusionist who performed mainly in Canada. He was the “Impossibilist”. Mr. Reveen toured as a performer for over 35 years. He came out of retirment in 2007 with a mini-tour which he called The Return of Reveen. He was a founding member of The Magic Castle, was awarded the DRAGON Award in 2000, was manager to Lance Burton and his biography of accomplishments goes on and on. He was married to Coral and had 4 sons, Wayne, Tyrone, Calvin and Peter Jr. His passing leaves a huge void in the world of magic and entertainment. May he Rest In Peace. Peter J. Have You Heard?… by Maria Ibâñez / April 8, 2013 Greetings, it has been a little while since you have received a copy of “Have You Heard?”, but I know you, the readers, realize that I have had my hands full with all the family issues we’ve had. Thank you for your support and understanding during the rocky times, that support means more than words can express. To update you, my Mom, who was so very ill and for whom we originally spoke with hospice and made all the arrangements, is stable and although wheelchair bound, she is improving. Her memory is like a roller coaster up and down and her periods of lucidity are shorter and longer time between them but she is alive and with us. A few weeks have passed since the last issue of this publication and I seriously considered doing away with it, but, the countless letters you’ve sent me, the phone calls, the inquiries and your requests have told me that you enjoy reading it so here is what I hope will be a regular issue from now on. Thank you again for your interest and support in this humble publication. The next few months will see me, Lord willing, attending MAGIC Live and Magic and Meaning. We are hoping to make it to one of the national conventions but it all depends on how Mom is doing and our plans are having to be made almost at the last minute. Michael Giles doesn’t care if you call him a magician. For some stage magicians, the classification of “magician” is considered more of a black mark than a point of pride. Escucho?… por Maria Ibâñez/Abril 8, 2013 Saludos, ha sido un rato desde que usted ha recibido una copia de “Escucho?”, pero yo se que, los lectores, se dan cuenta de que he tenido mis manos llenas con todos los problemas de la familia que hemos tenido. Gracias por su apoyo y comprensión durante los tiempos difíciles, el apoyo significa mucho más que las palabras pueden expresar. Para actualizar, mi mamá, que estaba muy enferma y para quien en principio habíamos hablado con cuidados para enfermos terminals, esta estable y, aunque en silla de ruedas, ella está mejorando. Su memoria es como una montaña rusa, arriba y abajo y sus períodos de lucidez son más cortos y más largos de tiempo entre ellos, pero ella está viva y con nosotros. Pocas semanas han pasado desde el último número de esta publicación y consideré seriamente acabar con él, pero, las innumerables cartas que me han enviado, las llamadas telefónicas, las consultas y sus peticiones me han dicho que usted disfruta de su lectura asi es que aqui esta una copia de lo que esperamos sera habitual de ahora en adelante. Gracias de nuevo por su interés y apoyo en esta publicación humilde. Los próximos meses van a verme, con favor de Dios, asistiendo a Magic Live and Magia y Significado. Esperamos llegar a una de las convenciones nacionales, pero todo depende de cómo lo está mi mamá y nuestros planes se ven obligados a hacerse casi en el último minuto. Funeral arrangements have been made and they are as follows: Friday, February 8 Viewing 5—12 Caballero Rivero Funeral Home 8200 Bird Road Miami, Florida (305) 227-3344 Saturday, February 9 9:00—11:30 11:30 a.m. we will leave for the Chapel at the cemetery 12:00 Noon—there will be a religious service at the chapel at Woodlawn Cemetery 3260 S.W. 8 Street Miami, Florida My father will be laid to rest at the mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery immediately following the service at the Chapel. Dear family and friends, of all the “Sad to Report” emails I have written, this has to be one of the hardest ones to date. A sad and heavy heart does not begin to describe the feelings experienced as I deal with the loss of my father. I am an only child and my father and I were as close as two human beings could be; his death is devastating emotionally. My father, a special and unique individual who was known for being witty, loving, giving and self sacrificing to a fault was a very independent man. He lived alone with my mother in an apartment about 5 minutes from our home. He was my mother’s caregiver and best supporter ever. He cooked her meals since she had her open heart surgery back in 2004. They were the proverbial eternal lovers who were never more than a few feet from each other. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary last December 4th, having married 2 years after they met. My mother, as most of you know, has been very ill since December 27th when she developed a urinary tract infection and it was discovered she has cirrhosis and problems with the pancreas. Subsequent to that she fell on January 3rd and broke her hip, a fracture which required surgery to put a rod in the bone and as a consequence of the anesthesia her Alzheimer disease has now advanced to a point where she does not recognize us at all. Throughout these trials and tribulations, my dad was a trooper and stood strong and steady alongside her. We are not sure whether it was too much stress for him, whether seeing her so weak and incapacitated was too much or whether it was just meant to be, but, on January 13 at 9:05 in the morning my dad phoned me and asked me to send him an ambulance because he was extremely weak and he was unable to even get up from his recliner to get a bottle of cold water to drink. Orlando, our oldest son, rushed over to pick up his grandfather and took him to emergency at Baptist Hospital where he remained hospitalized until the 24th. During the initial examinations on the 13th, the doctors discovered a huge mass in his left lung and further tests were done to determine whether or not it was malignant. A biopsy confirmed what we suspected and a subsequent PET scan showed an additional tumor in the right lung as well as metastasis to the adrenal glands in addition to several other lesions throughout the body. Dad was able to remain at home for two and a half days, returning to the hospital via fire rescue on the 26th of January with a blood pressure of 208 over 127 and in bad pain in the back. He spent another week in the hospital until they stabilized him and he was discharged under the care of Catholic Hospice on Thursday, January 31. During the 23 days that my father fought this dreadful disease, our son Orlando and myself never left his side. Jay took over the care for my mom in addition to caring for us by bringing us our meals, taking care of the day to day necessities at the house and doing whatever it took to try to keep a sense of normalcy in the house. Jason, our youngest son, lives 350 miles away and works 12 to 14 hour shifts at the hospital as does his wife but they managed to get away and come spend some quality time with my dad who also enjoyed spending time with his great grandchildren Elijah and Jianah. My father lost his battle to this terrible disease at 9:08 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5th, 2013….the day that my mother in law, coincidentally celebrated her 90th birthday. Dad passed away peacefully, asleep in his own bedroom, surrounded by an immeasurable amount of love but a love that could be felt in the air. By his side and holding his hands, with a hand on his legs, head or somehow holding him were not just myself, Orlando and Jay but also several friends who are now more family than friends, Jessi, Javier, Joann, Miriam, Franklin, Danik, Bruce, and our unbelievably wonderful nurse, Rafael, who was by his side for the last four days of his life as well as for his last breath. Jason could not make it in time to see him because Dad declined very rapidly and it was a matter of just a few hours from the time he went into a comma to the time he passed away, however, Jason was on the phone and spoke to him….we are sure my dad heard him as his breathing became much calmer and relaxed after Jason’s phone call. I know I have said this before and at the risk of sounding repetitive, I’d like to thank you each and everyone for the support you have given my family throughout these past few weeks via your calls, texts, emails, and letters. Words fail me at telling you what a difference your support has made and how very much you mean to us. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your kinds words, your thoughts, your prayers and for always being there for us. Un corazón triste y pesado no comienza a describir los sentimientos que experiment al lidiar con la pérdida de mi padre. Soy hija única y mi padre y yo estábamos tan cerca como dos seres humanos pueden ser, su muerte es devastadora emocionalmente. Mi padre, un individuo único y especial que era conocido por ser ingenioso, amoroso, generoso y abnegado hasta la exageración era un hombre muy independiente. Vivía solo con mi madre en un apartamento a unos 5 minutos de nuestra casa. Él era el que cuidaba de mi madre hacia mucho. Le cocinaba sus comidas desde que ella tubo cirugía a corazón abierto en 2004. Eran los amantes eternos proverbiales que nunca estaban más que unos pocos metros el uno del otro. Ellos celebraron su 64o aniversario de bodas el pasado 4 de diciembre, habiéndose casado 2 años después de que se conocieron. Mi madre, como muchos de ustedes saben, ha estado muy enferma desde diciembre 27, cuando desarrolló una infección del tracto urinario y se descubrió que tiene cirrosis y problemas con el páncreas. Con posterioridad se cayó el 3 de enero y se quebró la cadera, una fractura que requiere cirugía para colocar una varilla en el hueso y, como consecuencia de la anestesia su enfermedad de Alzheimer ha avanzado hasta un punto en que no nos reconoce en absoluto. A través de estas pruebas y tribulaciones, mi padre se mantuvo fuerte y firme a su lado. No estamos seguros de si era demasiado estrés para él, si al verla tan débil e incapacitado era demasiado o si estaba destinado para pasar, pero, el 13 de enero a las 9:05 de la mañana mi padre me llamó por teléfono y le pidió que yo le envíe una ambulancia porque estaba muy débil y no podía conseguir incluso levantarse de su sillón reclinable para conseguir una botella de agua fría para beber. Orlando, nuestro hijo mayor, corrió a buscar a su abuelo y se lo llevó a la emergencia en el Baptist Hospital, donde permaneció hospitalizado hasta el día 24. Durante los exámenes iniciales en el día 13, los médicos le descubrieron un tumor enorme en el pulmón izquierdo y otras pruebas se realizaron para determinar si era o no maligno. Una biopsia confirmó lo que sospechaba y una tomografía PET posterior mostró un tumor adicional en el pulmón derecho, así como la metástasis de las glándulas suprarrenales, además de varias otras lesiones en todo el cuerpo. Papá era capaz de permanecer en su casa durante dos días y medio, volviendo al hospital por los bomberos el 26 de enero con una presión arterial de 208 sobre 127 y en dolor fuerte en la parte posterior. Pasó otra semana en el hospital hasta que le estabilizó y fue dado de alta bajo el cuidado de hospicio católico el jueves, 31 de enero. Durante los 23 días que mi padre luchó esta terrible enfermedad, nunca nuestro hijo Orlando ni yo dejamos su lado. Jay se hizo cargo del cuidado de mi madre, además de cuidar de nosotros al traernos nuestras comidas, el cuidado del día a día las necesidades de la casa y hacer lo que fuera necesario para tratar de mantener un sentido de normalidad en la casa. Jason, nuestro hijo menor, vive 350 millas y trabaja turnos de 12 a 14 horas en el hospital, al igual que su esposa, pero se las arreglaron para escapar y venir a pasar algún tiempo de calidad con mi padre, que también disfruto de pasar tiempo con sus bisnietos Elijah y Jianah. Mi padre perdió la batalla a esta terrible enfermedad a las 9:08 pm el Martes, 05 de febrero 2013 …. el día que mi suegra, casualmente celebró su cumpleaños número 90. Papá falleció en paz, dormido en su propia habitación, rodeado de una cantidad inmensurable de amor, pero un amor que se respiraba en el aire. A su lado y sosteniendo sus manos, con una mano en su pierna, cabeza o de alguna manera lo sostenían no solo yo, Orlando y Jay sino también a varios amigos que ahora son más que amigos, son familia, Jessi, Javier, Joann, Miriam, Franklin, Danik, Bruce, y el enfermero increíblemente maravilloso, Rafael, quien estuvo a su lado durante los últimos cuatro días de su vida, así como para su último aliento. Jason no pudo llegar a tiempo para verlo porque papá se redujo muy rápidamente y era una cuestión de sólo unas pocas horas desde el momento en que él entró en un coma a la hora de morir, sin embargo, Jason estaba en el teléfono y habló con él …. estamos seguros de que mi papá lo oyó como su respiración se hizo más tranquilo y relajado después de la llamada de teléfono de Jason. Sé que he dicho esto antes y en el riesgo de sonar repetitivo, me gustaría darle las gracias a cada uno y a todos por el apoyo que han dado a mi familia a lo largo de estas últimas semanas a través de sus llamadas, textos, correos electrónicos y cartas. Me faltan las palabras que le dice a la diferencia que su apoyo ha hecho y lo mucho que significan para nosotros. Rough time….THANK YOU for your support Posted on January 8, 2013 by admin

Tuesday morning, 1/8/2013….so much to deal with….so many thoughts going through my heart and head today. The Hematology/Oncology Drs came in last evening and asked my dad and I to go in the room and closed the door behind them…..never a good sign. We were talked to about “quality of life”….”diminished mental capacity”….”inability to be mobile due to the diminished mental capacity and the HIGH risk of bed sores and further infection”, etc., etc., etc. It was recommended we speak with the hospice team so we could consider what options are available to us. Her ammonia levels are quite elevated, her platelets are quite low and dropping and then there is a slew of other things we’ve already heard of….what is new is that the lesion on the head of the pancreas seems is malignant and they will not do anything too invasive because she would not survive it — they also said she will not survive even 1 chemo treatment. Her lucid moments are shorter in length and there is a longer time between them; this hurts to no end. Last night she asked who the man in the corner was…it was my dad who has been her constant companion since 1948. We are in for a rough ride and it’s getting rougher and rockier but the Lord will give us strength. We have given a DRN (Do not resuscitate) in case she codes because my dad doesn’t want her on artificial life and neither does anyone else in the family. As far as my fall at the hospital…..5 1/2 hours in the ER – at the same hospital. Packed in ice all that time. Xrays show a sprained foot and broken big toe. Fortunately the bone did not shift so the only course to follow is to continue to ice 20 mins on 20 mins off 4 or 6 times a day, take my pain meds and keep it elevated. Elevated? Yeah, right….with all that’s going on “I don’t think so”. The Lord will help and see us through this whole tough time…..of this I am sure. Emotionally we are all wrecks but you, our friends and family, have been such a strong support that I cannot begin to describe what it means to us. Your emails, texts, phone calls and visits at the hospital have fed our strength and given us courage and encouragement. Thank you for your prayers. Thank you to all of you who have brought us dinner, lunch, snacks, drinks, etc., but more importantly….thank you for being there. We love you all! Jay continues to be at the helm of the ship and work as we are at the helm at the hospital. He is only a phone call away if something happens and we need him. His bosses have been wonderful and their prayers have given us so much strenth. Tomorrow would have been the birthday of my dear and loved mentor/friend/confidant, Alberto Montejo. It is now almost 3 years since we lost him and I miss him each and every day. RIP my friend and please be there to help my Mom so she won’t be lost and disoriented. Day after tomorrow, January 10th would have been my aunt/Godmother’s 91st birthday. We lost her this past October and he loss has made me feel more alone in the world than I can bring myself to discuss…..but then, you who know me and know how I grieve and feel and how I put everything inside before I can externalize it know full well the depth of my feelings. May she RIP and I know she is with her brothers, my grandparents and her two little sisters who passed as babies long before any of the others were born. I will always love you and will always miss you. Enough of a cry from me this morning. I LOVE YOU ALL and if I don’t say it often enough I LOVE YOU ALL. Thank you for being you and for your support. Martes por la mañana, 1/8/2013….tanto con que lidiar …. tantos pensamientos pasando por mi corazón y cabeza hoy. Los doctores Hematología / Oncología llegaron ayer por la tarde y nos pidieron a mi papá y a mi que fueramos a la habitación y cerraron la puerta detrás de ellos ….. nunca una buena señal. Nos habló sobre “calidad de vida” …. “disminución de la capacidad mental” …. “incapacidad para ser móvil, debido a la disminución de la capacidad mental y el alto riesgo de úlceras por presión y la infección más allá”, etc, etc, etc, se recomendó que hablaramos con el equipo de cuidados paliativos para que pudiéramos considerar qué opciones están disponibles para nosotros. Sus niveles de amoníaco son muy elevados, sus plaquetas están muy bajas y hay un montón de otras cosas que ya hemos oído hablar de ellas …. lo que es nuevo es que la lesión en la cabeza del páncreas parece es maligno y no van a hacer nada demasiado invasivo porque ella no sobreviviría – también dijo que no va a sobrevivir incluso un tratamiento de quimioterapia. Sus momentos de lucidez son más cortos en longitud y hay un tiempo más largo entre ellos, Ayer por la noche me preguntó quién era el hombre de la esquina … era mi padre quien ha sido su compañero constante desde 1948. Nos espera un camino difícil y es cada vez más áspero y rocoso pero el Señor nos dará la fuerza. Hemos dado un DRN (no resucitar) en caso de los códigos porque mi papá no la quiere en la vida artificial y tampoco nadie más en la familia. En cuanto a mi caída en el hospital ….. 5 1/2 horas en la sala de emergencia – en el mismo hospital. Embalado en hielo durante todo ese tiempo. Radiografías muestran un esguince en el pie y el dedo gordo del pie roto. Afortunadamente, el hueso no se desplazó por lo que el único camino a seguir es continuar en hielo 20 minutos en 20 minutos de 4 a 6 veces al día, tomar mis medicamentos para el dolor y mantenerlo elevado. Elevado? Sí, claro …. con todo lo que está pasando “Yo no lo creo”. El Señor nos ayudará y nos vera a través de este difícil momento….. de eso estoy segura. Emocionalmente estamos todos hecho pedazos, pero ustedes, nuestros amigos y familiares, han sido un gran apoyo que no puedo empezar a describir lo que significa para nosotros. Sus correos electrónicos, textos, llamadas telefónicas y visitas en el hospital han alimentado nuestra fuerza y nos ha dado coraje y aliento. Gracias por sus oraciones. ¡Gracias a todos los que nos han traído la cena, almuerzo, snacks, bebidas, etc, pero lo más importante …. gracias por estar ahí. Los queremos a todos! Jay continúa al frente de la nave y trabajando segun nosotros estamos a la cabeza en el hospital. Él esta a sólo una llamada de distancia si algo sucede y lo necesitamos. Sus jefes han sido maravillosos y sus oraciones nos han dado mucho aliento. Mañana habría sido el cumpleaños de mi querido y amado mentor / amigo / confidente, Alberto Montejo. Hace casi 3 años desde que lo perdimos y lo extraño todos los días. RIP mi amigo y por favor, esta allí para ayudar a mi mamá para que no se pierda y no se sienta desorientada. Pasado mañana, 10 de enero habría sido el cumpleaños 91 de mi tía / madrina . La perdimos el pasado octubre y su pérdida ha hecho que me sienta más solo en el mundo que yo me atrevo a hablar ….. pero entonces, ustedes que me conocen y saben cómo me duele y me siente y cómo guardo todo en mi interior antes de que pueda exteriorizar lo saben muy bien la profundidad de mis sentimientos. Que ella QEPD y sé que ella está con sus hermanos, mis abuelos y sus dos hermanas pequeñas que fallecieron como bebés mucho antes de que cualquiera de los otros nacieron. Yo siempre te amo y siempre te echo de menos. Basta ya de hablar de mí esta mañana. LOS QUIERO A TODOS y si yo no lo digo con bastante frecuencia los quiero a todos. Have You Heard?… by Maria Ibâñez / December 17, 2012 Greetings, this has been one of those weeks which had had more than its share of ups and downs. I spent Wednesday in the hospital, all day and all night, while my mother had transfusions because her hemoglobin had dropped to 7.1 without anyone actually knowing why that happened. She is 88 years old, has a triple bypass and is a diabetic so there are lots of health issues in addition to her age, but she is still here with us and that is a blessing. While at the hospital I received a phone call to let me know that our dear “fantastikoosh” had passed away in Hungary. She was weighing only 70 lbs when she passed away. What a sad bit of news about someone we so cared for. The news in the country went up and down as well. Barazarte, the man who had set fire to Wayne Houchin had turned himself in to authorities, this was good news; but then the TV stations were giving the news of the horrible shooting tragedy of so many innocent children and adults in an elementary school in Connecticut. Our thoughts and our prayers go out to all those affected as we pray that the craziness in the world ends. The weekend was full of activity as well. Friday we were running all over town taking care of the last minute needs for the Annual Party which had been turned into the Annual Awards Banquet and which would take place on Saturday. What an evening that was! A huge shout of gratitude to hosts Dr. Bruce Starr and Danik Mignano for a spectacular, magical evening which lasted well into the morning hours. Sunday morning came way too quickly, after only five hours of sleep we had to get up to go to yet another holiday party as a family friend who is also Jay’s customer was celebrating the first year of purchasing his business and the Holiday Party as well. Held at The Knife at Bayside, we were treated to great food, wonderful life music by one of his employees who is a terrific singer and guitar player and a delightful afternoon. Now to get ready for the events this week, toy runs for Toys for Tots, Mrs. Claus with Magical Storytelling at several elementary schools in town and working on bringing joy to as many children as possible. I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to say THANK YOU to each of you, the readers for your support all these years since the start of this humble publication back in 1998 and if I didn’t wish you and your loved ones a magical, happy, healthy holiday season and the best of everything for the new year. Whatever you celebrate, Christmas, Channukah, Kwanza, etc., may it be the best ever for you and all you love. From our home to yours, happiness and health today and always. MAGIC CITY CONJURERS – S.A.M. ASSEMBLY 280 The annual party was a success! Tens of members showed up on time for an evening which was full of great food, drink magic and camaraderie. The hosts created winding magical paths leading to the enchanted gazebo entrance that in turn lead into the exquisitely decorated home. The stage had been set, the banquet tables were ready, and even an area had been set aside for those who wished to peruse or purchase the latest magic effects. Sounds of the season piped throughout were heard all evening from the first “welcome” to the last “this was fun” at 2 in the morning when everyone vowed to do it again next year. Congratulations to the officers for 2013, to Magician of the Year, Alexander Blade and to the recipients of the Alberto Montejo Award, Dr. Bruce Starr and Danik Mignano.

Pasé el miércoles en el hospital, todo el día y toda la noche, mientras mi madre tenía transfusiones porque su hemoglobina había descendido a 7,1 sin que nadie realmente supiera por qué sucedió eso. Ella tiene 88 años, tiene un triple bypass y es diabética así que hay un montón de problemas de salud, además de su edad, pero ella todavía está aquí con nosotros y esto es una bendición. Durante su estancia en el hospital recibí una llamada de teléfono para decirme que nuestra querida “fantastikoosh” había fallecido en Hungría. Ella estaba pesando sólo 70 libras cuando ella falleció. ¿Qué un poco triste noticia sobre alguien que queriamos tanto. La noticia en el país subió y bajó también.
