Heal’s hosts Bodging Race Heal’s Modern Craft Market has returned to the department store’s Tottenham Court Road, London branch where this year it will be turning the shop window into a piece of “retail theatre” starring top furniture designers who will be engaged in a “Bodging Race”. Bodgers at work Bodging is a craft that sees green unseasoned wood fashioned into furniture using traditional Windsor chair making techniques. Chris Eckersley, Sarah Kay, William Warren, Gareth Neal, Carl Clerkin and the designer of Heal’s Koji collection, Koji Katsuragi will each take over the window for a week, beginning with Eckersley, who’s there now.
Nomadic lamp by Katharina Eisenkoeck At the end the press and customers will choose a design to go into production and be sold exclusively at Heal’s. Furniture design social enterprise Out of the Dark will be developing pieces from the Bodging Race and creating their own. There’s also a chance to view and buy pieces by designers identified as rising stars by Crafts Council.
Plate by Heidi Harrington Look out for Tortie Hoare, Jessica Coleman, Umat Yamac, Katharina Eisenkoeck and Heidi Harrington, who have all come through its hothouse scheme. They will all be conducting workshops, which you need to book in advance, if you want to get involved. Details here.
