We have several adtran switches and the previous admin didn't doc the password. I've tried the boot bypass, and it shows the hash for the changed password in the config, but even after writing memory, the password goes back to the original hash... I've scoured lord google for a solution to no avail... Thanks... 7 comments

This is relatively simple if you have RS232 connectivity and a tftp server at your disposal (if you are using Windows, then there are plenty of free ones, Linux is even easier) You have to forgive me for not knowing all of the AOS syntax exactly but: Connect your RS232 cable Reboot, and interrupt the boot process From here you can try one of two things: You can try to boot in bypass mode with "boot bypass password" or "boot bypass" (forget the specifics) Once it boots, try changing the password, saving, then rebooting to normal mode. From the sounds of it, you have tried this, so if this doesn't work, then try this: From the interrupted boot, copy the startup config to your machine either over serial or ip. You'll have to look up the specific syntax for this but it's pretty simple and the context help should be sufficient. If I recall it's like "copy tftp startup-config" or something like that. Once you get your config file, open it in a text editor and look for the account name in question. The line will say something like: User admin password (hash) encrypted Delete the hash and the "encrypted" keyword then replace the password with a plaintext one Find the enable as sword line, and do the same thing. Save the file, then copy it back to the switch via tftp, overwriting the existing startup config file and reboot.

Once the switch reboots, you should be able to log in via sash or rs232 and change the account and enable passwords using the AOS command line, which will automatically store them as encrypted hashes by default. Save the config and you're done. permalink

I did try the boot bypass and was able to see the hash and edit it, but it wouldn't save and survive a reboot. I will definitely try the tftp of the config and see if that will save correctly... thanks permalink

No problem. I ended up having to figure out that method myself when I was confronted with an Adtran firewall that lacked an RS232 port. I dunno if it's documented anywhere specifically...maybe I ought to start a blog or something ;) permalink

We aren't here to troubleshoot your "advanced" video game latency issues. Home Networks, even complex ones are best discussed elsewhere like /r/homenetworking HomeLab discussions, as a tool for learning & certifications are welcomed.

Don't know anything about ADTRAN, but I know that Cisco has an option to disable password recovery. Maybe poke around and make sure there isn't one/it's not enabled for this device. permalink

I've done this particular set of steps on several Adtran firewalls and routers and it's worked pretty well. permalink

Blogspam / Traffic Redirection.

Yea, it sounds spot on. I was just thinking that there might be something considering it dropped his changes once he rebooted. permalink

That seems a little weird, but it's hard to say without seeing exactly what happened. I'm pretty sure the second method of simply overwriting the config with tftp should do the trick though. permalink
