Help with dd214?

Hi, prior service Marine here - I've been trying to get back into service for the past few months now and getting my dd214 has become extremely frustrating. I have the first page of the dd214 which shows my schools, awards, MOS, etc. but when I went into the recruiter's office back in March I was told that I'm missing a page containing my re-enlistment code (page 4 I think?)

I've gone online and have seen that E-vetrecs can get veterans copies of their dd214's for free. I tried that, but they keep asking for me to fax in a signature verification and then I don't hear anything from them, and not only that the thought of starting that whole process again (which I guess would take 4-8 weeks?) doesn't thrill me. Is there any way faster that I could get that page of my dd214 without having to pay anywhere from $90-$150 for some company to track it down for me? The recruiter's office told me they sent in a request but I haven't gotten anything as of yet. I know my re-enlistment code is RE-1A, I had a clean record and was honorably discharged.

What you need is COPY 4 of your DD214 . On the lower right hand corner of the DD214 is marked "Member - 4" this is also referred to as an "undeleted" copy of your DD214. The 1st copy or "Member - 1" copy is a "deleted" copy and does not have the nature of discharge, reason for discharge or RE code, that is why you need copy #4. If you cannot find the original copy #4 that was issued to you along with copy #1, first contact your STATE department of Veteran Affairs (NOT THE FEDERAL VA), they may have copy #6 and can provide you with a certified copy of the state document, or go to the federal VA website and download a copy of form SF 180. Complete the form and send to the National Personnel Record Center (address #14 of the instructions) and they will send you a copy of your DD214. Takes from 4 to 6 weeks to get from NPRC.

I faxed a Form 180 to the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis and received an undeleted DD214 in about 7-10 days. A full SRB on the other hand took FOREVER......and they still left some

Fellas I am very proud to say I may have found a solution. www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrec My good friend just pointed that out to me, he said the NARA site is controlled and operated by people who actually care. I sent my request in today, cross your fingers, and I wish the rest of yous the best of luck. They said now it only takes 20 days... and he got his back in exactly that time and there were no "clerical" errors made, everything was all there.

You can also check the county court house of the address you put as your home of address on the DD214. May of my clients were able to get theirs.

When I got out I lost mine like a month later, it was a process to get a certified copy of my 214. I had to request it from St louis by filling out a SF180 I had to explain that i needed it for school and GI bill verification and I needed it rather fast. It still took me 3 tries but finally like 4 months later poof I have a photocopied 214 in my mail box signed by someone certifying it as true. I was talking to a recruiter the other day about reenlisting he was telling me the the Corps was just about up to its new strength and if I wanted to get back in It would have to be soon cause us PS guys might not be able to get back in. Which I found rather unusual so I called RSS all over the country and was getting the same story. Now I have to get in contact with them again I could see losing rank or time in grade but just not being able to come back in doesn't sound right. It may be because I'm an 0311 but not sure. Maybe they are bringing back boat spaces or something which I would understand. Anyways enough ranting for me, here is a link to the SF-180 (http://www.archives.gov/veterans/mil...-form-180.html) best of luck to you. Semper Fi!

If and when you get your requested DD214 it is recommended that you take the Member 4 copy to the Register of Deeds or Vital Records in your count seat and have them register it.

Then put your original with the rest of your important papers in a fireproof box. When you have your final dirt nap your NOK will alleviate the hassle to get what little benefits are coming to them. Good luck!

After I was discharged, from the hospital, at Yokasuka, Japan, and stationed at NTC, Orlando, Fl., in 1970, I was given my DD214......with only, the National Defense Ribbon!! NO 201 File, ZIP!!! After 2 years of physical therapy, and a WHOPPING 10% Disability.....I gave up. Had a massive heart attack, in Feb. of 97', and the V.A. came to my rescue! I made one call, to my local Congressman, and about two weeks later.....201 file, Medical History, After Action Reports, and.....about another week later.....a DD215.......TWO PAGES!! I owe, BIGTIME for the care, and help, I received. BUT.....ME...DUMB BLONDE, LOST that DD215, somewhere!! Sent the "usual" request to evetrec, BUT....after getting TWO letters, saying that I had not signed the paperwork....I went "Doc-Nuts"!! I called them, DIRECTLY, and.....GEE! They had misplaced my request! I've been promised that I would receive my DD215, in a couple of weeks. We'll SEE!!.....Doc Greek

Your state department of veterans affairs should have a copy of your DD214. For example, any veteran who enlisted in my state (Indiana), a DD214 will be sent to the Indiana Department of Veteran Affairs when they are separated from the service. I request lots of DD214's for my customers by having them fill out the SF180 and faxing it to St. Louis, but you need to check the back of that SF180 (Location of Military Records) because not all SF180's should go to St. Louis. Not all records are kept there, although most of them are. The veterans I help normally get their DD214's within 14 days. Hope this helps, pm me if you have any questions. And when you get it, put a copy on file at your county clerks office, they will file it for free and then you can always get a copy there.

Records Branch Try this number: 703-784-5646. That is to the records branch on Quantico at MMSB-12. I had a friend of mine call yesterday and they said he could come in and pick his up anytime. Maybe they can send you one.
