New Adventures Dear Readers, Welcome to the third edition of Read! Fest. This year we’re celebrating - New Adventures! This theme is a reminder for us, readers to revisit books old and new, and relive the moments where every visit to the library or the bookstore was an adventure in itself. In keeping with the theme, we have over 170 exciting programmes lined up just for you, ranging from author panel discussions, craft activities, book swops, literary games and live performances. Don’t forget to check in at the Reader’s Day Inn, where you get to participate in author panel discussions, singer-songwriter sessions and DIY zine making. You can even get your favourite quote illustrated and catch live performances! A major highlight is launching the festival in tandem with the National Reading Movement (NRM). Aimed at encouraging the nation to Read more, Read widely and Read together, the NRM will see books move beyond the walls of the libraries to public and community spaces like the MRT trains and workplaces. In order to further create awareness and commitment of Singaporeans to read and promote reading, the NRM will kick off a 2-month pledging campaign to get Singaporeans to pledge to read. To end with a bang, the last day of Read! Fest 2016 on 30 July will coincide with the inaugural National Reading Day, a community-centric movement to celebrate the joy and importance of reading as a nation. NLB will also be organising a charity drive, “Read for Books” for our beneficiary - kidsREAD clubs, who organise weekly reading programmes for children from lower income families. Bring your reading materials along and join us for a day of activities at the Plaza, National Library Building. Whether you prefer an adventure in outer space, one in extreme weathers and terrains or simply battling with your cats at home, we hope to bring you, the reader, into a whole new world. A book is your plane ticket, your guide to the galaxy. Take the road less travelled, journey to new places and make new friends. We hope that you will embark on a journey with us through Read! Fest 2016.

Russ Neu Wee Teck was based in Laos from 2008 to 2009, where he worked in the Laos Institute of Foreign Affairs teaching English to public officials. He initiated many grassroots activities such as the Laos-Singapore Charity Run. His Laos experience is chronicled in his book, A Whole Neu World, published in 2012.

Join these travelers who survived their crazy adventures and lived to tell, or in this case, write the tale! Alvin Mark Tan (Thirty Days on the Camino: A Pilgrim’s Sketchbook Journal), Russ Neu Wee Teck (A Whole Neu World: 18 Months in Laos) and Ning Cai (Adventures of 2 Girls) will regale us with tales on what goes into writing a travel memoir in this panel moderated by Tan Mei Ching (Towards the Blue: Adventures of a City Wimp).
Tan Mei Ching writes novels, short stories, plays, children’s books, and creative nonfiction. She has received NAC’s Young Artist Award for Literature and awards for Beyond the Village Gate and Crossing Distance. Her travel narrative, Towards the Blue: Adventures of a City Wimp, relates with humour her journeys in the Canadian wilderness.
Author’S Bio Alvin Mark Tan is a Singaporean realist painter, illustrator and designer based in Florence, Italy. He has published three books featuring his artwork and urban sketches, including Thirty Days on the Camino: A Pilgrim’s Sketchbook Journal.

Hear from the playwrights themselves as we ask them questions on re-stagings of their works. Do re-stagings have to be an exact repeat of the script? How closely do playwrights work with newer companies that are tackling their scripts? Do they ever regret some decisions that directors and actors have made with their scripts? These are some of the questions we’ll be asking these playwrights and we are eager to hear some of their wisdom. So come on down and learn about the inside workings of the rehearsal room as Playwrights Talk.
Joel Tan made his debut at the 2011 Man Singapore Theatre Festival, with W!ld Rice’s production of ‘Family Outing’. Since then, he has worked with varsity theatres like NUS Stage (City Night Songs, 2012), USProductions (People, 2013), community youth groups like Takeoff Productions (Postgrads, 2012; Mosaic, 2013) and Creative Edge (People, 2014). He has written for W!ldrice (Jack and the Beansprout!, 2013), The Finger Players (The Next Page, 2014) and Checkpoint Theatre (Our Lady of Lourdes, 2014), where he is an Associate Artist.
Author’S Bio Jean Tay has been nominated three times for Best Original Script at The Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards, and won for ‘Everything but the Brain’ in 2006. Her plays ‘Everything but the Brain’ and ‘Boom’ have been published by Epigram Books, and ‘Boom’ is currently used as an ‘O’ and ‘N’ Level literature text. Jean is the founding Artistic Director of Saga Seed Theatre, set up in 2015 to bring Singaporean stories to the stage, and provide a platform to showcase and nurture local talent.

Nessa Anwar (Moderator) studied playwriting and screenwriting under Checkpoint Theatre’s Artistic Director Huzir Sulaiman and local filmmaker Wee Li Lin, respectively. She has written several - and 1 award-winning - short films under a production company she helmed, and has written 2 broadcast television programmes for Mediacorp Suria as well. Nessa also wrote her first fulllength play commissioned for a Singapore Writer’s Festival Checkpoint Theatre 2015 event entitled ‘Riders Know When It’s Going to Rain’, which will be restaged for the 2016 Singapore Theatre Festival.
Huzir Sulaiman is the cofounder and Joint Artistic Director of Checkpoint Theatre, his play ‘The Weight of Silk’ on Skin opened the Man Singapore Theatre Festival in August 2011 and won Best Original Script at the 2012 Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards. As a playwright, his works include the satire ‘Atomic Jaya’ (1998), as well as Singapore Arts Festival commissions ‘Occupation’ (2002) and ‘Cogito’ (2007). He’s been writing music for over seven years, performing at gig staples such as Timbre, the Esplanade, *SCAPE, Marina Bay Sands and the Padang. Jawn also performed at the world reknowned Byron Bay Blues Fest in March of 2016. He won The New Paper Loudr.sg cover competition and was a finalist in both 987 FM’s The Next Big Thing, and Timbre-NoiseSingapore’s Singersongwriter Competition.

Natalie Hiong, bankerturned-singer-songwriter, forayed into the music scene in 2011 with her debut EP ‘Little Heart’. Her lilting voice, personal lyrics and sweet personality has charmed the hearts of many, and has seen her making a mark on the local music scene with her brand of folk-pop. In 2013, Natalie released her sophomore EP ‘Beautiful Mess’ with a launch party at Hood Bar and Café that drew a full house.

11 Jun, Sat / 3.30pm - 4.30pm Multi-Purpose Room, Central Public Library Stephanie Ye is the author of the chapbook The Billion Shop, and the editor of From the Belly of the Cat, an anthology of cat-themed Singapore short stories. She will be discussing The Inlet, a gripping novel by Singaporean author Claire Tham that was inspired by the case of the Chinese national found drowned in a private pool in Sentosa Cove. Her narrative explores the tensions between immigrants and locals, poor and rich in contemporary Singapore. It was shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize in 2014.
Gwee Li Sui
25 Jun, Sat / 2pm - 3pm Multi-Purpose Room, Central Public Library Gwee Li Sui is a poet, graphic artist, and literary critic. A familiar name in Singapore’s literary scene, he has written and lectured on a range of cultural subjects. He will be discussing Superman: Red Son by Mark Millar, a comic mini-series created with the premise “what if Superman had been raised in the Soviet Union?”
Alfian Sa’at
25 Jun, Sat / 3.30pm - 4.30pm Multi-Purpose Room, Central Public Library Alfian Sa’at is a resident playwright with W!ld Rice. His published works include collections of poetry, short stories and plays. He will be discussing The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew. A very rich text because of its mockumentary/speculative history format, this will be an interesting discussion on the existence of Charlie Chan the comic artist and whether an appreciation of the book depends on how ‘real’ he is.

We are all creatures of the city, and the city lives in light - an incessant sun by day and the interminable glow of streetlights at night. Though we chase the shadows away, they live on in cracks and moments; the incidents of stories.
Join acclaimed singers and songwriters from the Mandarin music scene, Aaron Lim and Peng Chi Sheng (founders of Intune Music), together with local composer Derrick Tham for an evening of performances and discussion on Chinese pop music and lyrics.
Artist’s Bio Neon & Wonder consists of Marc (vocals, cajon), Daniel (guitars) and Sophie (keyboards). They write original songs and set spoken word to music. To date, the band has two full length albums of spoken word based on two books of poetry.
Artist’S Bio Co-founder of Intune Music, Aaron Matthew Lim’s (林伟强) personal portfolio as a singer includes collaboration with Cultural Medallion Winner Dr. Liang Wern Fook. Aaron released his EP ‘To Protect’ in 2014.

Derrick Tham (譚志華) began composing in 1999 and had his first song published in 2002, sung by Taiwanese artist Jozie Lu. Today, after clocking over a decade of songwriting and music publishing, he is best known for his collaborations overseas with singers like Sam Lee, Fish Leong and Hu Xia. Co-founder of Intune Music, Peng Chi Sheng (冯启胜) has 15 years of teaching experience. He is also a songwriter, writing for regional superstars like Tony Leung (梁 朝伟). Chi Sheng was the assistant producer for Xinyao’s Godfather, Dr. Liang Wern Fook’s first instrumental album.

This debate is organised with Debate Association (Singapore), a non-profit, volunteer-run organization that aims to develop and support structured debate in Singapore. The teams are undergoing the association’s Debate Development Initiative, a training course for upper secondary school students, especially those who do not have access to financial and institutional support for competitive debate.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Story Challenge!
Faster than you can say on-the-spot improvisation, The Theatre Practice brings the mindbending, fast-talking madness of Story Challenge straight to your libraries! The audience participates by contributing themes and conditions for the stories to be told by their quickthinking actors, who are given a mere five minutes to create each story. Selected participants also get a chance to join in the performance, but they have to stay nimble and alert – there’s no telling where the story will go!

Tibby & Duckie’s tale celebrates selfdiscovery, the power of uplifting others and swimmingly good friendships. Author’S Bio Emily Lim is an author of 28 children’s picture book titles and is the 1st outside North America to win three medals at the IPPY Awards (the world’s largest book awards competition). Her books have been published in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Korea; crossed platforms into theatre, Apps and animation; and are also used in schools. Emily was named Mediacorp’s Singapore Woman Award 2013 Honouree for inspiring her readers through her children’s books and her memoir Finding My Voice – a true story of setbacks, new beginnings and toy characters, which chronicles her journey of losing her voice to a rare illness to finding a new voice in writing and publishing.
Author’S Bio Armed with a degree in drama and years of theatre experience, Ms Aidli Alin Mosbit has worked extensively with many Singapore theatre companies like The Necessary Stage, Teater Kami, Teater Ekamatra, to produce quality and popular theatre productions. Ms Aidli also has several awards to her name, including the Young Artist Award for Theatre in 2008 for her contribution to theatre and the Malay language in Singapore.
