Availability and Ordering

The following Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G1000 configuration options are available for ordering through Insight and Hitachi Data Systems Configurator on PartnerXchange on April 23, 2014. Please note that export compliance clearance is still pending for Russia; we anticipate shipment approval by early May. Until then, only quoting support for Russia is available; quotes will be processed for order once approval is secured. Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G1000 Configuration Options

Hardware First control chassis includes a physical chassis, 1 pair of virtual storage directors (VSDs), 1 switch-cache(CPEX) feature and 1 SVP. Second control chassis includes a physical chassis, 1 pair of VSDs, 1 switch-cache adapter feature and 1 HUB. VSD Minimum/Maximum (Min/Max)

Each control chassis may contain 1-4 pairs of VSDs; 1 pair of VSDs is included automatically as part of the control chassis; the 2nd thru 4th VSDs are optional.

Cache Min/Max

Each control chassis may contain up to 1024GB cache in 64GB increments or 512GB cache in 32GB increments. Note:  Some cache in the 1st control chassis will be reserved to be used as control memory. The amount reserved is based on the number of LDEVs to be used as well as the firmware-based features to be enabled.  Minimum configurable cache is 64GB.  The configurator in Insight will provide guidance for cache required based on other systems options selected.

Drive Min/Max

Each control chassis may support up to 1152 2.5” drives or up to 576 3.5” drives or combinations of the two. RAID-1+0 (2D+2D or 4D+4D), RAID-5 (3D+1P or 7D+1P) and RAID-6 (6D+2P or 14D+2P) are supported (same as VSP). The configurator in Insight will guide selection of drive types by number of RAID groups specified and spare drives. Each control chassis may contain 0, 1 or 2 back-end directors features, If no back-end directors are configured, the system will be diskless. One back-end director feature in a control chassis allows connection of up to 1152 2.5” drives or up to 576 3.5” drives or combinations of the 2 associated with that control chassis. One back-end director feature in a control chassis allows connection of up to 96 Flash Module Drives. Addition of the 2nd back-end director in a control chassis increases total bandwidth to/from the drives to that control chassis. It does not affect the number of drives that can be connected to that control chassis. Each control chassis has 12 slots, located in the rear, available for front-end directors, back-end directors and 3rd and 4th VSD pairs. The following provides guidance on the maximum number of Fibre Channel ports that may be configured based on the number front-end directors, back-end directors and VSD pairs included in the control chassis.

Back-End Director Min/Max

Front-End Director Min/Max

A chassis including 1 or 2 VSD pairs may have up to 96 Fibre Channel ports (in increments of 16). If 1 back-end director is installed, this number decreases to 80 ports, if 2 back-end directors are installed, this number decreases to 64 ports. With a 3rd VSD pair installed, the chassis may have up to 80 Fibre Channel ports (in increments of 16). If 1 back-end director is installed, this number decreases to 64 ports, if 2 back-end directors are installed, this number decreases to 48 ports. With a 4th VSD pair installed, the chassis may have up to 64 Fibre Channel ports (in increments of 16). If 1 back-end director is installed, this number decreases to 48 ports, if 2 back-end directors are installed, this number decreases to 32 ports. A minimum of 1 front-end director is required on every system (16 ports). With 1 or 2 VSD pairs installed:  If no back-end directors are installed in the control chassis, then 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 front-end directors (16 ports each) can be installed in that control chassis.  If 1 back-end director is installed in the control chassis, then 1,2,3,4 or 5 front-end directors (16 ports each) can be installed in that chassis.  If 2 back-end directors are installed in the control chassis, then 1,2,3 or 4 .front-end directors (16 ports each) can be installed in that chassis With a 3rd VSD pair installed:  If no back-end directors are installed in the control chassis, then 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 frontend directors (16 ports each) can be installed in that control chassis.

Each rack containing the control chassis can have 0, 1 or 2 drive chassis installed.  A drive chassis can hold either 2.5” or 3.5” drives, but not both.  A drive chassis for 2.5” drives can contain 0 to 192 disks.  A drive chassis for 3.5” drives can contain 0 to 96 disks. Rack Min/Max

Control Chassis Prerequisites

If a 2nd controller chassis is installed in a system, it is installed in an additional rack. Connection between the 2 controller chassis is accomplished via interface cables, which the Insight configurator will automatically include.

System Prerequisites

The Insight configurator will identify and include cables, bezels, power supplies and filler panels for the system configuration as required. Additional disk racks and/or disk chassis may be ordered via the configurator to allow pre-installation for future upgrades, thereby simplifying the field upgrade process in the future.

Software Features The following software products are priced and licensed based on the following factors:  Total system capacity plus the number of virtual storage director pairs.  Total system capacity = usable internal capacity + usable external capacity. Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System (SVOS) SVOS is composed of a set of storage capabilities and management tools, including the following:          

Global storage virtualization capability enables active-active clustering environment spanning multiple VSP G1000 storage systems.* Universal Volume Manager enables virtualization of external heterogeneous storage. Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning provides thin provisioning for simplified provisioning operations, automatic performance optimization, and storage space savings. Hitachi Device Manager provides single-point management for all Hitachi physical and virtualized storage, and acts as the interface for integration with other management systems. Hitachi Resource Partition Manager supports secure administrative partitions for multitenancy requirements. Cache partition manager feature supports up to 32 cache partitions. Hitachi Dynamic Link Manager Advanced provides advanced SAN multipathing with centralized management. Performance monitor feature provides an intuitive, graphical interface to assist with performance configuration planning, workload balancing, and analyzing and optimizing storage system performance. Software Pricing

VSP G1000 pricing structure is consistent with existing pricing models for VSP and HUS VM with the exception of capacity ceiling cap. The overall product structure is designed to provide a relative low barrier to entry to accommodate entry-enterprise organizations looking for scalability and rich functionality. Initial software license capacity blocks incentivize organizations to buy up to 80TB of usable and 40TB of used capacity at a discounted price, and large single capacity ceiling options benefit organizations with high-growth systems. Total system pricing, on a new footprint, meets or beats equivalent VSP pricing for small systems up to ~100TB. However, the software capacity cap increases to 560TB for features licensed on a usable capacity basis and to 280TB for features licensed on a used capacity basis, raising the price of larger configured systems.

Technical Considerations

HDS will deliver VSP G1000 pre-installed in racks. Organizations may also choose to use their own racks if they meet VSP G1000 requirements. Using the “3rd-Party Rack Requirements” document, HDS Customer Sales & Support will verify if the organization’s rack meets HDS specifications. If the rack is acceptable, the VSP G1000 system may be ordered without the HDS rack. The requirements document can be found on the VSP G1000 TechTips or from the myHDS Product Page. When shipped without the HDS rack, VSP G1000 will ship to the company site as separate components. HDS support personnel will install VSP G1000 into the company’s rack. Please be aware that extra installation charges will be included in the quotation to address the additional work involved with this process.
