Hitting Hybrids self.golf

I was curious if anyone else out there in Golfit land has the same problem I do with hybrids. Earlier this year, when I got back into golfing again, I bought the set I use (Adams A7OS) specifically for the reason that the 4 and 5 irons are actually graphite shafted hybrids while the rest of the set are more traditional looking steel shafted irons.

My thinking was, any monkey can hit a hybrid. Well, apparently not this monkey. I have tried all sorts of remedies (articles, YouTube clips, etc) and when I am on the range I don't seem to have any issues but when I am on the course I either top them or shank them horribly. In my tournament over the weekend I completely threw away a second hole birdie (only my second of the year) by shanking my 4iron/hybrid into a pond on the 3rd hole par 3 - blowing up my card with a 7.

After that point, I did not pull out any of my hybrids again. I just used my 6 iron which I am money with (usually hit it about 180 yards) - so even on the par 5's, when I was over 200+ out after my tee shot, I used the 6 iron to get it close enough for a chip on which worked out well for me.

Now I am kicking around the idea of replacing the hybrids with more traditional ones like one of these but still leaves me with my 3 hybrid (TaylorMade Burner 2.0 rescue) which is a complete risk/reward club for me. Either it delivers or it bends me over and reminds me why I suck. Any ideas as to why this happens to me? I have read that you should hit your hybrids like your irons but when I do the same setup as I do with my 6 the results are just not good. 17 comments share save hide report

I pure my hybrids, and hit them like I hit my irons, haha. But you need to hit the ball with the mentality of letting the club do the work and not trying to crush the freaking things. I see a lot of people taking out hybrids and just overswing out of their shoes, because they're treating the club like a distance tool. When you stop doing that and accept, "hey, I'm going to swing relaxed and hit these 200 yards (within my comfort zone)" then you get good results -- like any other iron shot you take. You don't try to destroy an iron for an extra 10 yards, you hit it to a distance you know you always do and work on accuracy. embed

I can't hit hybrids. They are too flat and usually have a draw/closed face. Most pro's play ones that are customly opened up because of this.

However, I've found I'm better with a 4 iron (like you with the 6) instead of worrying if I'm going to blaze one out of bounds permalink

I would rather leave it short and in the fairway then either blast it OB or top it and watch it dribble 20 yards or so.

That is why I have switched to using the 6 even when I am too far away to carry the distance. embed

You are supposed to hit hybrids like irons. I have the Cobra S3 max 3,4 and 5 hybrids and absolutely love them. I used to treat them more like woods but in fact you have to hit them like irons. Meaning ball position more in the center or just back of center and hit down on them. Just like an iron you use the clubs natural loft to get the ball into the air. These hybrids I have are graphite shafted and I must say when I catch one right they just explode off the face. permalink

I'd disagree with your ball position argument. You don't play a 4 iron from the middle or just behind middle of your stance, so you shouldn't be playing the hybrid that replaces your 4 iron there either. But different strokes for different folks, so whatever works for you. permalink

I just read an article explaining why keeping the ball consistently placed and adjusting your stance width can give you more consistency as its easier to keep the ball in the same place for a consistent set up. I haven't given it a try but it sounds like an interesting idea. permalink

Brand new golfer here. I purchased the exact same Adams A7OS set as you, and find the 4 and 5 hybrids similarly difficult to hit. Below are some thoughts people who've watched me hit them have shared with me. If you're already setting up the ball position so that you're striking down on the ball, then the problem may be that your wrist is casting outward too early. That's a problem that I have anyway, and it's one I can more easily get away with using say, the 8- and 9-irons than the 4- and 5-hybrids. It's a symptom of trying to swing hard, which messes up your weight transfer. I try to focus on slowing down enough to control my wrist and make a nice divot on the ground--that's how you'll know whether your swing is working. Anyway, when I've raised the solution you proposed to others, people always advise me to consider investing in some lessons rather than different equipment, as the Adams A7OS set is apparently more than sufficient to make for a satisfying recreational golf experience. permalink

That said, I am having a hard time figuring out the transition between my 6 iron swing to the 4 and 5. I've tried duplicating what I do with my 6 iron and it isn't working.

I am currently the high bidder on an Adams 4 iron like the one I linked to above. $8.00. I figure it is worth $8 for me to see if using that kind of club will give me better results then having to learn to transition to a different swing for the 4 and 5 to work right. embed

I actually have taken a few lessons and plan to take more. That is how I have been able to dial into my 6-PW clubs. The only issue I have with those clubs now is that I am compressing a lot more so I am having to re-learn how far I hit those clubs.

I have the exact same problems with my hybrids, except I hit them horribly on the range as well. This year was horrible for what I spent time practicing vs. results. I worked on my hybrids all season and got no where, while my irons started to get sloppy and then lost my swing with them almost entirely at the end. Just horribly frustrating. permalink

Write a course review. (Tips on how to post one.)
All I can say to you is that it is good to take breaks every now and then. I got into an awful funk a few weeks ago and instead of trying to force it, I just stopped completely for almost 2 weeks. No rounds, no range practice...nothing. When I came back again things were much much better. permalink

I feel your pain. I have the Adams Idea A7 set and find the 3 and 4 hybrids almost impossible to hit. The closed face doesn't suit my eye well at all, and when I play the ball up in my stance like a 3 or 4 iron, I end up hitting a major snap hook. I have the best luck playing the ball barely forward of center with the face square or even a little open, but even then it doesn't feel natural and I have a tough time getting enough distance. For example, I hit my 5 iron from that set about 180, but I'm lucky if my 3 hybrid even goes that far.

I'm really happy with the clubs overall, but I'll probably look for something to replace the hybrids next season...or maybe I'll just get a new set. :D

The set that I have came with the 4H-GW so I did not get the 3H.

If I bought a new set I think my wife would kill me. Hence why I am just looking to replace the 4 and 5. :) permalink

i consider myself a decent golfer, and i have yet to fall in love with my hybrid. i'm now considering buying my 3rd hybrid to try to find the "magic" that is supposed to be there. i've owned a taylor made rescue and now play a nickent 3dx with a grafalloy hybrid blue shaft. my miss has always been a low snap hook with these clubs. i'm now going to try an adams super, but if that doesn't work, i'll just put the 3-iron back in the bag, although i suck with it, too. permalink

not meaning to be so narcissistic as to reply to my own post, but here goes. bought the Adams Super SS 22* R flex with stock Matrix Program 7.1 last night, and put it in play for 30 holes before we got rained out. omg it's awesome. I'm in love. avg'd 220 off the tee, about 205-210 off the deck. long, high, boring, tight shot dispersion, workable, and great feeling. best $150 I've spent in a LONG time. permalink

When I swing hard with my hybrids, I hook them. When I swing easy, I slightly draw them. Try to swing easy. A nice, smooth swing. permalink
