Horticulture Associate in Applied Science Degree • Certificate of Proficiency • Certificate of Specialization

Graduate in a Growing Industry Horticulture at St. Louis Community College is a multifaceted subject. Not only is it the art and science of growing plants, but the program also focuses on the knowledge and skills needed for careers in the green industry including landscape and garden design, greenhouse management, plant research and landscape management. Classes are infused with the latest technology and current topics in the green industry. In this comprehensive program, students receive broad training in plant identification, plant propagation, pest and disease management, soil science, plant physiology and turf management along with their relationships to the environment and the sustainable landscape. Students may earn an Associate in Applied Science Degree, a Certificate of Proficiency or a Certificate of Specialization in Horticulture.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM The Associate in Applied Science Degree in Horticulture is a 66-credit-hour program, comprised of 39-credit-hours of horticulture-specific classes and 27-credithours of general studies. Students may choose to pursue a Certificate of Proficiency in Horticulture, which can be earned by completing the 39-credit-hours of horticulture course work only. Students may also choose to earn a Certificate of Specialization by completing 12-credit-hours of horticultural courses. With either the AAS or the Certificate of Proficiency, students can specialize in Landscape Design if they so choose. Day and evening classes are offered to accommodate working students and busy professionals. This unique program combines classroom and hands-on learning in state-of-the-art facilities, laboratories, greenhouses and campus grounds. The 78-acre Meramec campus features numerous gardens and plant collections that serve as unique outdoor living laboratories. In addition, the college enjoys a close working relationship with the St. Louis green industry, including Missouri Botanical Gardens and numerous green industry small businesses, providing

our students with expert instruction and enhanced networking opportunities within the field.

OPPORTUNITIES IN THIS FIELD One of the benefits of having a horticulture degree or certificate is the wide range of job opportunities available. Some of our students and graduates work at botanical gardens, zoos, golf courses and garden centers. Others are employed by St. Louis area municipal parks and in research positions for established companies and startups. STLCC students and graduates grow ornamental plants and food crops; manage sports fields, sell horticultural products and create landscape designs for clients across the St. Louis metropolitan area.

Individual salaries vary by geographic location, the type and size of the employer and the extent of the horticulturist’s education and experience.
