How do you turn off health kit step tracking?
r/iphone
I noticed that the iOS 8 health app on the iPhone 6 has been quietly tracking my steps and other data like how many flights of stairs I've climbed.

I can't seem to figure out how to disable this. Does anyone know to turn this off? I assume it's something that would eat battery life as well.

Unfortunately I'm not sure how to turn off step tracking from the Health app. But regarding your concern about battery life, it shouldn't impact battery life much at all. There is a motion processor dedicated to tracking steps and elevation changes that is separate from the main processor. I don't know the specifics of how it works, but this is from the Apple website: "M8 coprocessor. Technology that moves you forward. When you’re in motion, the M8 motion coprocessor continuously measures data from the accelerometer, compass, gyroscope, and a new barometer. This offloads work from the A8 chip for improved power efficiency. And now those sensors do even more, measuring your steps, distance, and elevation changes." Share

wow this is neat i never knew my device was doing this, I always meant to go in and turn it on but kept forgetting. I opened the app and it says 6300 steps today, this is cool! Maybe I won't carry my fitbit anymore but i should probably compare the # of steps and make sure they are the same.

I've never owned a Fitbit, but I've heard stories of people sitting at lunch and logging 100+ steps while not even moving. This is to say that you shouldn't take one or the other as the "truth", but rather have some control in your experiment, too. Share

It has a negligible effect on battery life. It's a tiny co-processor that's always on anyways, step tracking is just another value it calculates. There wouldn't be a noticeable difference in battery life outside of maybe a minute or two over the entire charge cycle. The biggest battery eaters are your screen/data usage/location services. Share

Does anyone know of a way to look at the data? The chats they show aren't very useful. All I wanna see is how far I walked on a certain date. I know you can export some data to a XML file but it's hourly data points and only goes back a week so that's pointless. Share

From my knowledge, you need to install an app (e.g. Stepz) that takes the data from the coprocessor and turns it into readable data. The steps should now appear under HealthKit Share

This is exactly what I was looking for. I tied a few other apps with no luck. Thanks! Share

You can always go a step (partial pun intended) further and get an app, lark.com, that literally chats with you about your HealthKit data. Share

You can't turn it off as far as I am aware. It is all logged through the coprocessor with no choice to turn it off. But it has been engineered to have essentially no effect on your battery. Share

Do you speak about the graphs on the Healthkit app in the Dashboard ? If he doesn't have those it's because he didn't move them to the Dashboard but his phone is still monitoring the steps. Share

I do not care about battery life. I do care about the phone tracking me, my movements, my vertical movements, and other information. I don't trust Apple with this information. Frankly, I wouldn't trust any device with this information, although it's hard to prevent leakage. This "Health" app leakage however is entirely unnecessary. I would like to know how to disable the motion co-processor entirely, or in the alternative, how to prevent any data from being retrieved from it. Please advise? Thanks! Share

Apple does not see this data. It's stored in a similar way as credit card details and Touch ID biometric information. It's only on your phone and nowhere else. However, if you allow apps to read from HealthKit, they usually choose to upload data to their servers to do computations with it. By default, no one has access except you. Share

Thank you. I presumed that to be the case, but I would rather it not be collected at all. This way it cannot be misused in the first place, or taken if I lose the phone, etc. Share

i know this comments have been dumped aside for long. but recently I have some problem regarding my iphone. I just signed up an iphone package in my country and obviously it is 0n 12 April 2015, but when I opened my HEALTH APP, it showed the beginning track of my step (dashboard) is on 6 April 2015 for not more than 10 steps acitvities . Is that mean if Iphone is powered off, it still able to track? Or it simply means my iphone is turned ON before? Share
