I am just wondering what is the best way to start an email in Russian. What would be the equivalent of "Best regards," or "Kind regards?" 15 comments

"Доброго времени суток" is such an awful new thing. Buggers me every time I see that. permalink

Yeah, I can't stand it, too. But I decided to leave my personal opinion out of the advice. :) The informality of it, on the other hand, can really backfire for OP. permalink

How about "Thanks for your time" at the end? Would that sound natural? permalink

"Заранее спасибо за ответ" - -1 to karma. In e-mails, I treat this phrase as captation (заискивание). permalink

Dictionaries

It may be suitable for business e-mails in some areas (like arts, journalism, etc) or with people you already know personally. However initial contact and exchange with corporate representatives and state officials is supposed to be more formal than that.

Google:деловые письма When I email to colleagues or friends, we almost never use either "Dear..." or "best regards, ". If I wanted to write a formal letter, I would start with "Уважаемый...", but "best regards, " would still be fine to skip. "С уважением, " is an option. On the other hand, in a personal/formal kind of letter, like when you send your older aunt a postcard for her anniversary, you may use "Дорогая ..." and end with "С наилучшими пожеланиями, ...". It's something like this: in business context, you're not supposed to get overly personal. Older and more conservative people may find that disrespectful. So you're better off starting with lots of "уважаемый" and "Вы", and avoiding personal stuff. But personal letters may be completely different. In Western culture, the difference is less pronounced, and business letters are often supposed to be written as personal ones. permalink

I often start my letters from "Приветствую" or "Приветствую, %Name%", using it as a good replacement to "Доброго времени суток". permalink

"Приветствую" isn't really formal and in my opinion is just awkward. It is like you aren't sure how to address the person you're writing to, should you use "ты" or "вы" with them, formal or personal style, ending up with something in between, which isn't good for any situation (again, that is just my opinion and how it feels for me). I agree though that "Доброго времени суток" should never be used, ever. permalink
