How to end an Afrikaans letter My son has to write two Afrikaans letters for school - an informal one and a formal one. How does one end an Afrikaans letter? I'm thinking the equivallent of "Yours sincerely" or "Your friend" Thanks a ton!

According to the "Afrikaans Handbook and Study Guide" (which is pretty much the Holy Grail for any student doing Afrikaans in school) informal is either 'Groete' or 'Liefde'. Formal is 'Die uwe'

Afrikaans isn't, or at least shouldn't be that rigid anymore. Be creative. Depending on the type of relationship, "Alles van die beste", "Tot ons mekaar weer sien", "Beste wense", ens. Reply With Quote

Die Uwe = yours sincerely Beste Wense = kind regards, Or Vriendelik Groete,

I usually use these, die Uwe is more when talking to my proffesors.

Professors. I made a spelling mistake earlier today and someone corrected me. I believe it to be my duty to do the same. And since you are a university student, you should appreciate this bit of constructive criticism.

Judging by the memo's of the matric final papers, the markers don't take to kindly to creativity. Just stick to what the book says for school-related assignments Reply With Quote

I remember our Afrikaans teacher saying an informal letter would be...Met best groete aan almal tuis...and I still remember the boy who tried to go one better and wrote ...met beste groente en vrugte aan almal tuis
