Pest controlers have said they could number up to 40 million although the most recent estimate is currently 33 million. The rise has been blamed both on the hot wet summer and the ongoing strychnine ban. Europe banned the use of strychnine hydrochloride in 2006 on the grounds that it is unsafe for wildlife and causes the moles unnecessary suffering. However, increased mole populations are problematic for farms and can damage crops and machinary. " Before the 2006 ban on strychnine the Government estimated more than 3,000 farmers and landowners would have poisoned the moles themselves. The options open to them now are expensive pest control, traditional methods, or leaving the moles alone. Here are the best ways to get rid of moles humanely: Dig a mole barrier. Dig a trench 8 to 12 inches wide and 24 to 36 inches deep around the area you wish to protect. Fill it with gravel and cover it back up. Create a pit trap. Dig into a mole tunnel and place a large jar with the rim level with the bottom of the tunnel. Cover the tunnel with a board to keep the light out. Check the trap and release mole into the wild when caught. Flood the hole. Insert garden hose into tunnel and flood. Buy a mouse trap. Moles are roughly the same size as a large mouse and can be caught using a mouse trap. Use castor oil. Pouring castor oil into a mole's tunnel will give it an upset stomach and discourage it from staying.
