Troubleshooting adding the Nest thermostat to a Wi-Fi network> > Your location> Your Nest thermostat uses your location to update the date and time and get local weather information. If it’s connected to Wi-Fi your Nest thermostat will try to guess your location. If it’s not correct you can enter the correct location here. If you didn’t connect to Wi-FI you’ll need to enter your country, location, date and time zone. Next choose your home type (single-family, multi-family, apartment or condo, or a business). Your Nest thermostat will act a little differently if it’s in a business. Select which room your thermostat is in. You can choose names like hallway, basement, or bedroom. You can also enter your own custom room name if the room you want isn’t available. Equipment> 1. If you installed your Nest thermostat yourself, select homeowner to answer a few questions about your heating and cooling system. If you purchased your thermostat from a Nest Pro, your installer will select Nest Pro and enter their Nest Pro ID. Your Pro installer will need to complete this step during installation in order to activate your Extended Pro Warranty. The Nest thermostat uses System Match to tell what kind of heating and cooling system you have in your home, but you’ll need to enter some information yourself. You’ll see a wiring diagram. Use the picture you took during installation to check that the wires your Nest thermostat detects are the same as the ones you installed. If you see a wiring error on your thermostat you’ll need to resolve it before continuing. For specific troubleshooting steps, follow the link below and enter the code. Troubleshooting wiring errors on the Nest thermostat > Once your Nest thermostat has confirmed your wiring, it’ll ask some questions about your wiring. If you have a wire labeled O/B, you have a heat pump. If you didn’t install an O/B wire, you have a conventional system. Note: If you're installing a Nest Thermostat E, you may have installed a wire into the O/B connector. This connector has multiple uses, so make sure to only select Heat Pump if you know this wire is an O/B wire. Select your heating type below for more information. Conventional systems> If you have a conventional system installed, your thermostat will ask about the fuel source for your heat and how that heat is delivered. The Nest thermostat uses this information to determine how to control your heating and cooling system. You may also be asked whether you have a forced air, in-floor radiant, or radiator system. If you’re not sure, see the article below. How to tell what kind of heating you have > If you know your fuel source, select it from the list. You can also choose I don’t know if you’re not sure. You can always go back later to change your fuel source in the Settings > Equipment menu. Heat pumps> If your system is a heat pump with an additional heat wire, you’ll be asked if your system is dual fuel or single fuel. If you’re not sure, see the article below. Learn more about dual fuel > Next you’ll also be asked about the orientation of your O/B wire. Your O/B wire determines when you get heating and when you get cooling. Your system can be either O or B oriented. If you don’t know, the Nest thermostat will assume an O orientation. You can test your system to find out if you selected the wrong orientation, you’ll get hot air when you try to cool or cool air when you try to heat. If you selected the wrong orientation don’t worry, you can change your O/B orientation any time in the Settings > Equipment menu. My heat pump cools when it should heat > After you’ve finished setting up your conventional or heat pump system, your Nest will ask you some questions about temperature. Temperature> Tell your Nest thermostat if it should start by heating or cooling your home. Then, choose your Eco Temperatures. Your thermostat can use Home/Away Assist to know when you leave and automatically set your thermostat to your Eco Temperatures to help save energy. Use the Nest Leaf guide to choose Eco Temperatures that can help you save energy.
