2017 MINTEX OLD STAGER ASPHALT HISTORIC RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP INCORPORATING THE MINI SPORT MINI CUP & MINI SPORT JUNIOR MINI CUP February has been quite a busy month for the old STAGER Championship. There are currently 35 crews registered for the championship of which 27 are Minis. The remainder are a great mix of historic cars including a Hillman Avenger, 2 TR4’s, a Triumph 2.5pi, Vauxhall Firenza (not mine!), an Imp, a Lancia Fulvia and a Mk1 Escort. With only one Category 3 car and no category 4 cars registered so far there is a good opportunity for competitors in these categories to do well in the race for the overall champion. With enquiries still coming in we expect to have over 40 crews competing in the championship this year. th

Entries for the first round, the PaintworX AGBO Stages on the 19 March filled up very quickly for this popular event at Weston Park in Shropshire. There are currently 22 old STAGER crews on the entry list with a number on the reserve list hoping to get a run. The second round, the Dixies Historic Challenge Rally also opened its entry at the end of February and we had over 25 entries placed within the first 24 hrs. We have secured additional sponsorship for the championship from Millers Oils. Through the product support that Millers Oils will bring to the championship, competitors will benefit directly through a scheme to distribute Millers Oils products to them during the season. With their specialist Motorsports and Classic Ranges, Millers Oils have developed products for classic cars for both competition and road use. Specifically for our Mini competitors they have developed a special competition oil CTV Mini 20w50 which protects both the engine and gearbox. One of our aims for 2017 is to raise the profile of the championship and we are therefore pleased to announce a media partnership with Sidewaysmedia who will be filming rounds of the championship to be released through websites and social media. Finally, the Mini Cup competitors had a test day last weekend at the Curborough Sprint Venue near Litchfield. Whilst it was a little cold the rain fortunately held off until mid-afternoon so most crews managed to get a good days testing in prior to the start of the season. Highlight of the day was Clive King spinning Kevin and Rob Baldwin’s Hill Climb Car onto the infield. Rob was relieved to not be the only one to spin it! That’s all for this month. Simon Malins Old STAGER Historic Asphalt Rally Championship Secretary

https://www.hrcr.co.uk/hrcr-championships/old-stager-stage-rally-championship/ HRCR ANNOUNCE A NEW MEDIA PARTNERSHIP WITH SIDEWAYS MEDIA The HRCR Mintex Old STAGER Asphalt Historic Rally Championship incorporating the Mini Sport Mini Cup & Junior Mini Cup and the HRCR Stage Masters Rally Championship are delighted to announce that, in collaboration with Sideways Media, championship rounds will receive dedicated filming. Event highlights will be broadcast upon our social media sites within days of the action happening along with magazine style films throughout the year combining footage from different events. At the end of the year Sideways Media will produce season reviews including a DVD release. With various ways to watch rallying these days, we believe that broadcasting the footage through social media sites is the most effective way to both raise the profile of HRCR championships and to offer valuable media support to our competitors. HRCR HAGERTY INSURANCE CLUBMANS ROAD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

Since the February edition of the HRCR members Newsletter we enjoyed the HRCR Dinner Dance and awards presentation at Hellidon Lakes. On the Friday prior to the event Gill and I called in to Hagerty Insurance near Towcester to collect the awards and spent Saturday afternoon identifying and arranging them into the correct order for the presentation. Mike Sones had been preparing his commentary to go along with the slide show created by Andy Ballantyne and we had been swopping emails on the detail for some weeks beforehand. I was really pleased with the way the evening developed and with the turnout from the Clubmans Competitors with the Majority of award winners attending to collect their trophies. I was thinking I could slip off to bed at about 11 o’clock at the end of the presentation but was having a lovely time talking to everyone until my voice gave up about quarter to one in the morning – way passed my 9.30 bedtime!

Here’s Roger and Julia Bricknell receiving the Hagerty Insurance Spirit of the Championship award from Managing Director, Angus Forsyth, and yours truly. Sunday morning dawned bleary eyed for the Annual General Meeting. As is usual with these events we struggled to get 20 members, including your committee, so next year I shall start bugging you about attending at the beginning of the year! . th

As of to-day, 28 February 2017, we have 73 contenders registered for the 2017 HRCR Hagerty Insurance Clubmans Road Rally st Championship with the potential of a further 20 or so at the 1 round, The Tour of Cheshire, this weekend. As always this event has a fully subscribed entry of 85 and Gill and I will be at Signing-On to encourage more competitors to register for the championship and then see you out marshalling on the day. We are looking good for a cracking year of very competitive historic road rallying.

.

Andy Pullan and Iain Tullie have volunteered to be available at the end of the Tour of Cheshire to answer any questions you may have on the navigation, route and timing. Mike Harrison and his team will arrange to have a full route on display at the finish, so if you are a complete Novice or a newly graded Expert or Master do not be shy or embarrassed about asking either of these very experienced navigators for an explanation of why you may have gone wrong during the event.

So far we have 14 cars signed up for the HRCR Amazon Cars CHALLENGE CUP. I’m not sure everyone has grasped what this is about yet and I shall be persuading more folk to register in Cheshire. Already there are a wide range of marques including, Mercedes, Saab, Reliant, Porsche, MG, Nissan, Opel, BMW and various Volvos. I’m sure the majority of competitors drive their cars to and from the events and this award is aimed specifically at you. st

The 1 March edition of “Motor Sport News” will have a full page feature on historic rallying so I urge you to buy or borrow a copy, if you can find one by the time this Newsletter is published. I’m not sure what it will contain but I had a half hour telephone interview with Paul Lawrence, the historic rally editor, a few weeks ago. I must admit to not being a regular reader and stopped taking “Motoring News” as it was then many years ago, but if I can persuade them to find space to mention each of our championship events this year then it may find another customer or two? That’s about it for this month so if you have any questions please drop me an email at [email protected] Cheers Ian

The 2017 HRCR MOTOSCOPE Northern Historic Championship was officially announced at the HRCR Open Day at Gaydon on Saturday 14th January. Regulations were published on January 1st. 2017 sees a gravel, asphalt and overall championship for competitors to compete in.

The gravel championship has 8 events beginning with the Riponian Stages (Sun 19th Feb) in February which returns to the championship for the first time since 2014. The Malcolm Wilson (Sat 11th March) is round 2, followed by the Border Counties (Sat 18th March) a week later. Round 4 sees the contenders join the crews in the British Historic Rally Championship on the PIRELLI Carlisle Rally (Sat 29th April) which is held in Britain's largest man made forest-Kielder. The DMACK Stages and the RSAC Scottish Rally are not part of this years championship following competitor feedback so the next round is Greystoke (Sun 9th July) in July and the only event in the championship to not use pacenotes. The Galloway Hills Rally hosts round 7 in early September (Sat 9th Sep). Then the final two events are in the Yorkshire Forest complex with the Trackrod Historic Cup (Fri 29th-Sat 30th Sep), where the contenders are once again alongside the crews in the British Historic Championship for their final round. Then the final round of the MOTOSCOPE championship is the Malton Forest Rally in early November (Sun 5th Nov). Barry Jordan through his BRM Jordan Rally Team is offering a prize for the 2017 HRCR MOTOSCOPE Northern Historic Gravel Rally Championship. The overall winner will receive a free entry to the 2017 Roger Albert Clark Rally running from the 10th-14th November 2017. The gravel championship is organised in association with the Historic Rally Car Register, sponsored by MOTOSCOPE, and supported by KD Grafix, Cameo Engraving, Self Storage Northallerton and Phill Andrews Photography. The asphalt championship was first run in 2016 and was won by Brian/Nikki Middlemas in the Hillman Avenger. The series has 8 rounds with the best 6 to count and takes place on the military venues Warcop and Otterburn with two events on each. A new event organised by North Humberside Motor Club starts the season with the opening two rounds, the Warcop Stages on Sunday 16th April, Round 3 and 4 take place on the Otterburn Ranges for the Tyneside Stages Rally on Sunday 6th August and the first visit to Otterburn. Round 5 & 6 sees the second visit to Warcop for the Pendragon Stages Rally (Sun 10th September), then the final event, Round 7 & 8 are back on Otterburn for the Cheviot Stages Rally on Sunday 22nd October. Each event offers two scoring opportunities with points awarded half way through the event and following the final results. The asphalt championship is organised in association with the Historic Rally Car Register, sponsored by MOTOSCOPE, and supported by KD Grafix, Cameo Engraving, Self Storage Northallerton and Phill Andrews Photography. The overall championship combines the two surfaces. Of the 12 rounds, 8 will count towards the championship and to qualify competitors must score on either 6 gravel events and 2 asphalt events or 6 asphalt events and 2 gravel events. Registration for the Gravel & Asphalt Championship is £50 (per crew) or £30 individual (driver or codriver separately). There is no registration fee for the Overall Championship as competitors will have already registered for either Gravel or Asphalt. More details can be obtained from Championship Co-Ordinator Mark Casey on 07949 899 619 or by emailing [email protected]. Championship Regulations and Registration forms for Gravel, Asphalt and Overall are available to download from the championship FaceBook page in the Files section: www.facebook.co.uk/groups/HRCRMOTOSCOPENHRC/

The 2017 challenge continues to grow with new crews making inquiries on a weekly basis. The Sierra Cup has had a huge response with a number of owners considering whether to take part in the series in the new Group 4b category, just to remind people that Category 4b includes cars registered and homologated in Groups A, N and B between 1 January 1986 and 31 December 1990 (but not group B cars). Cars in Category 4b must comply with their Homologation forms and Appendix J of the 1990 FIA Yellow Book and must have been issued with a valid FIA Historic Technical Passport (HTP), be in compliance with this document and the current FIA Appendix K at all times. Hopefully, we'll have some information on reuniting a famous pairing from the 1980s soon...and a big award for the Sierra Cup.

Please remember we have a similar cup for BMW's! So, if you're an owner then come and join us. We also have two competitors looking for navigators ideally for the whole series but just to get going would consider a one off for the Rally North Wales. Freddy Camp, Peugeot 205, based in North Devon is ideally looking for someone to cover the entry fee and own accommodation & food. Contact: [email protected] or phone: 07831 551 908 Mark Ferreday, email: [email protected] Car is a1953 VW Beetle, has race history from 1953. A paying co-driver would help although could be capped at around £100 plus accommodation. But could also be negotiable for the right person.... For more information on the West Wales Rally Spares HRCR Stage Masters Challenge please contact Andy Ballantyne 07970 226 397 or email: [email protected] 2017 EVENTS CALENDAR Round 1.

DEVON CLASSIC RALLY RECCE COMPLETE A two-day recce has now been completed for the Classic and Clubman section. Clerk of the Course Andy Ballantyne has found some new tests and has ventured into new territory for the 3 running of this year’s event.

rd

The ‘early bird’ entry fee for the 2-day rally will remain at £495:00 including 2 nights stay at the Hampton Hilton Hotel near Exeter Airport. The first day will incorporate a run to Cullompton then over the Blackdown Hills to Smeatharpe where most tests will take place. Talks are still taking place about the use of a well-known hillclimb venue for a test and coffee halt before the run back to the Hotel and the customary 3 course group meal. There have been around 25 crews already committed to the main rally with the road book containing simple ‘jogularity’ instructions to get everyone around the route. Day 2 will head to Tiverton for a new test before the lanes around South Molton and then looping back via Okehampton with the lunchtime finish back in Exeter on Sunday. Competitors can register their interest by emailing: [email protected] regulations are due out at the beginning of April. The Clubman rally will follow the main event starting at Cullompton around midday but will continue into the evening with a meal at Exeter Racecourse before entering a 2-hour night regularity section using the best roads over Haldon Hill with the first car due back around 9pm with prizegiving around 10pm, back at the racecourse. MIDLANDS HRCR have run a competitive Autotest for a number of years now at the Donington Historic Festival, so becoming a regular feature of the Midlands Region’s programme and used by many as a popular shakedown session. Last year, some 80 HRCR members were on site over the duration of the event, either participating in 30 cars as Driver / Co-Driver or being one of the 20 members either helping as marshals or taking rides in other members cars. Last month’s Newsletter mentioned the organisational changes currently taking place at Donington and some firm details eventually come through from the 2017 Historic Festival’s organisers as to what is expected from HRCR Midlands. Historic Promotions is still promoting the whole event which, for this year, for which ‘get involved’ is the theme. Thus organisations who share that philosophy or who are able to let members of the public take part in some way are being encouraged to participate. The situation was discussed at the early February HRCR Midlands Management Team. After canvassing for Member opinions, there was a real concern about the insurance implications and so a reluctance to allow members of the public to participate in the Autotest. For this year the Tarmac Lake will be used by Paul Swift in an arena, Rallying with Group B, British Historic Kart Club, and Go Motorsport and that their space might also be available for sharing with HRCR being members of one of its invited clubs. Given the pressures on the small Midlands Management Team around late April, May and early June, HRCR will not be at the Festival in its own right this year. But it could return in 2018 if there was adequate time for investigating and completing the necessary preparations . David York

NORTH WEST 21st February (Tue) saw our Grope night organised by Dave Ward at the Olde Parkgate Inn, Stocks Ln, Over Peover, Knutsford WA16 8TU. Dave had put 20 items of domestic and automotive origin into 20 of his size 11 (clean) socks for us all to have a good feel and grope at. The one item that fooled most people was the knife sharpener that is stuck to a worktop by a sucker. ½ point was given for sucker as no-one managed to get the knife sharpening purpose. The winners were team “Touchy Feeley” (Duncan & Cherrie Wild, Pam Butterworth & Shôn Gosling). Thanks to all who came along. SOUTH EAST LONDON & SURREY Tardy reporting meant the Area went OTL on its January bulletin, correctly incurring the wrath of the Editor (albeit somewhar kindly). Highlight of January was in fact the Area's "Not the Christmas Dinner" late in the month. This has become an absolute must-do event for at least eight of us in recent years. 2017's gathering was, however, marred by the loss of founder-member Geoff Cooper who sadly died early in the New Year. His devotion to our sport, endless support for the Area and selfless gift of aid to any mechanical

problem and actual presence in so many rally cars through his superb electrical knowledge cannot be replaced. A true gent, sorely missed. We toasted his memory. February also marks a sombre event, the anniversary of the loss of another stalwart member, Brian Hugh. In his memory as supreme quizmaster we now have an annual quiz (4th running this year) which we hold at our February meeting. Guest participants are Southern Car Club where Brian was a member for many years. A suitably Timely quiz was put together by Quizmistress Penny Robson and the laurels carried off by Equipe Doherty. They retain the trophy for its year and get dumped with preparing next year's quiz. We may perhaps expect a horticultural bias from Mrs D, noted National Trust plant guru. Looking forward, we have the pleasure of a visit from Bill Price in April remembering his BMC team exploits. Our meetings continue at The Bell, Outwood, RH1 5PN. Last Thursday of the month, 7pm for dinner and meeting at 8pm. Decent pub, real ale and a respectable wine list to complement reasonably priced food. Denis Robson Area Organiser

HRCR MEMBER TAKES TIME OUT TO VISIT THIS YEARS MONTE CARLO RALLY – A USER’S GUIDE It’s definitely one for your bucket list. Our first trip to watch the Monte Carlo rally in January 2017 – from the start in Casino Square, to the service Park in Gap, to the stages in the Alps – was exhilarating and enjoyable.

But it isn’t easy, in the sense that viewing circuit racing is immediately accessible. Watching an event as complex and extensive as the Monte Carlo rally requires planning, an inventory of equipment and methodical execution. We flew to Nice, which is closest to Monte Carlo, but Marseille is another option. We hired an Audi Q5 Quattro, aware of forthcoming trips into the mountains and the likelihood of snow and ice. The event starts on the Thursday evening in Casino Square, which is of course part of the famous Monaco Grand Prix circuit. The Café de Paris is the place to be, from which you can view the starting ramp and the adjacent competitors’ lounge. We found that drivers, navigators and team personnel were surprisingly accessible, coming through the Café to and from the lounge. We spoke with several World Rally Championship stars, including Britain’s Kris Meeke and his Citroen teammate Craig Breen. The start is a famous and integral part of the Monte Carlo rally, but in fact apart from the start and finish, not much actually happens in Monaco. The service Park is in Gap, in Alp Provence, and this is the epicentre of the rally. Don’t underestimate the journey from Monaco to Gap. We took what the map suggested was the most direct route, which turned out to be a picturesque but immensely winding road. The journey can take about 4 hours. There is a longer, but probably quicker, motorway route. At recent functions at the Royal Automobile Club we’d got to know Malcolm Wilson, MD of M Sport which builds and runs the Ford World Rally cars. Malcolm and his wife Elaine kindly invited us to join the M Sport team in the Gap service park. M Sport had recently succeeded in signing the reigning World Champion Sebastien Ogier and his navigator Julian Ingrassia, so the stakes and expectations for Ford were running high.

With enthusiastic crowds at least 10 deep in front of the service area, we were treated to a close-up view of the stylish and speedy arrival of Ogier, and later the other M Sport drivers. The mechanics set to work, stripping the cars and fettling them for the following day’s stages. Many thanks to M Sport for this privileged insider view. And so to the challenging bit – actually watching the cars on the stages. To do this successfully you will need: 1.

The organisers’ stage guide and timetable, which you need to study carefully and decide which stages you are going to visit.

2.

A detailed map of the Alp Provence region, so that you can identify the minor roads that you will need to take to get to the vantage points.

3.

An able map reader and navigator – luckily in my wife Lorraine I had one.

4.

Although the Q5 had its own satnav, we brought with us our own familiar Garmin, which was superb – the detailed information it carries is incredible, and even the smallest French backroads are included. Breaking journeys into segments between villages made the job a lot easier.

5.

Walking boots – remember this is part motorsport, part Alpine walking holiday.

6.

Warm clothing – Alpine gusts can be chilly.

7.

A flask of coffee and some food.

8.

A foldable stool or cushions – there are no spectator facilities on the hillsides!

9.

A dongle, paired to your iPad or similar. It hugely enhances the experience to be able to follow the live feeds.

Thus equipped, set off to your chosen stage viewing point, aiming to get there about an hour before the stage is due to run. Parking is a mix of fields made available by locals and (mostly) just parking along roads as near to the stage as you can get. Then it’s on with the boots, and an invigorating uphill trudge, usually for about 30 minutes or so. Find your vantage point, break out the coffee, and settle down for the action. And WRC 2017 certainly lived up to its billing. Radical new regulations for this year have seen a return to dramatic rally cars with elaborate aerodynamic appendages, sights and sound not seen since the legendary Group B era of the 1980s. Excellent vantage points were not difficult to find, and we enjoyed spectacular viewing, in company with a large and enthusiastic crowd made up of many nationalities.

I had expected bottlenecks when leaving stages, but in fact departures of the viewing fans were spread out over a considerable period, so we experienced no difficulties in being able to leave, and to move onto the next stage. Although disappointed for Kris Meeke, who retired from the rally, we were delighted for Malcolm Wilson, M sport and Ford, who won the rally with the brilliant Sebastien Ogier. Having learned the ropes, we will be back in 2018 for another fix of the Monte Carlo rally. I think one word sums up the experience: addictive. Harry Shephard
