With the new blockbuster comedy Due Date under his belt and Hangover 2 currently in production, Budnick and director Todd Phillips are blazing trails while creating a loyal following. Budnick began his film career in casting on the DreamWorks comedy Road Trip, filmed in Atlanta and directed by then-newcomer Todd Phillips. Budnick went on to work on films with Phoenix Pictures, the company founded by former Tri-Star Pictures chairman Mike Medavoy. When Phillips signed a three year deal with Miramax, he tapped Budnick to run his production company, Green Hat Films. As associate producer, co-producer, and now executive producer, Budnick has helped produce a number of popular films, including Old School, Road Trip, The Hangover—the highest grossing “R” rated comedy in history—and Due Date. Goizueta Magazine: As an executive producer, how do you spend most of your days? Budnick: As the president of Todd Phillips’ company, Green Hat Films, I do whatever it takes to bring a film project to life for him. I spend a lot of time working directly with our writers to get a script ready for shooting. I also work with Todd on casting and then manage the budget, help in hiring the crew, schedule shooting, help select the music, and work with the studio throughout the shooting to keep the film on budget and on time. Goizueta Magazine: What’s the most challenging aspect of your job as executive producer? Budnick: Just the time it takes to put a film out. It’s a two year process from start to finish, including pre-production, production (which lasts for 50 to 60 days), and then postproduction, where we make final edits and work on the marketing and publicity for the film. So just imagine being in different phases of this process on 17 different films. Goizueta Magazine: What is the most rewarding aspect of your work? Budnick: After The Hangover, people would come up to me and mention they were hit hard by the economy, and some of them had lost their homes and were sleeping in their cars. But for a few hours, they said, The Hangover made them laugh and forget about their problems. I feel good that I was part of a project that could help do that. Goizueta Magazine: How did the Goizueta course Entertainment Management help prepare you for the film industry? Budnick: The class was great because it highlighted the different angles and roles within the industry, such as producing, marketing, publicity, and the overall management and financial side of the entertainment business. One day a week, Andrea Hershatter [senior lecturer in the practice of organization and management and associate dean and director of the BBA Program] would bring in a guest speaker to talk about their role in the industry, whether it was a news producer from CNN, a marketing director from Turner, or a director or producer from a hit television show like Party of Five. This course really opened our eyes to a number of prospects. Goizueta Magazine: What’s your best advice for students wanting to break into the industry? Budnick: The best advice I could give people is to get an internship or two under your belt before moving out to Los Angeles on a permanent basis. Most of the major studios have summer internship positions and many of them are paid. Internships are great for learning the business and understanding how it works and making your connections. Before I graduated I had completed three internships—with a casting director, with Baywatch, and with United Talent Artists (UTA). When I moved to Los Angeles after graduating from Emory, I knew how to get around LA and already had a network I could call upon for jobs. In addition, you need to be willing to work hard, have a great attitude and, of course, be patient as you learn the business and make contacts. Goizueta Magazine: Does Green Hat Films plan to bring more business to Atlanta? Budnick: I love Atlanta and I am a native, having lived in Dunwoody and then in Decatur’s Druid Hills area during college. We filmed two of our movies in Atlanta. After landing a choice offer in the highly competitive analyst training program at Citi, finance major David Tuder 06BBA packed his bags and headed for the Big Apple. In 2010 he segued into an associate job in leveraged finance at the financial giant. “Basically, what I do is provide corporate issuers with access to debt and equity markets,” he says. Despite the long hours, hard work, and challenging economy, Tuder says he truly enjoys his work at Citi. “I sit on a trading desk, and it’s a very fast-paced environment. It’s interesting to be in a job that’s dynamically impacted by what’s going on around us, whether it’s changes in the capital markets or in macroeconomic conditions.” The recent booms and busts in the markets, says Tuder, have given him an opportunity to learn about the inevitable cycles in the industry. That insider’s perspective is one he’s willing to share. Since graduating, Tuder has offered his advice to Emory students and grads interested in working in the financial world. “Interviewing for one of the banks or investment firms can be intimidating,” he says. “The recruiting process can be painful. It’s tough to get a job in this environment, and when I talk to students, there are things I can tell them about the job search that I wish I had known when I was in their position.” In addition to speaking at workshops on campus, Tuder has collaborated with Career Services to bring Emory graduates to the attention of Citi’s recruiters. He has organized several large-scale Emory events at Citi, and his efforts have led to full-time jobs and internship opportunities for a number of Goizueta BBAs. As a result of Tuder’s unflagging commitment to recruitment, Citi recently made Emory one of their Gold Level target schools. Tuder also mentors new analysts at Citi, helping to build recruited talent once they’re on the job. His contributions to recruitment and talent development led the company to honor Tuder with its 2011 ICG Citizenship Award. In presenting the award, Citi’s president and COO, John Havens, told Tuder that “your leadership . . . sets a standard for how all others should be measured.” Goizueta agrees. In February, the school presented Tuder with its 2012 Outstanding Recent Alumni Award. David Tuder profile In 2007 Vitrue, then a usergenerated video company that helped brands capitalize on the popularity of online video, was doing well. Barely a year and a half old, it was growing and signing up clients. But entrepreneur Reggie Bradford 99EMBA felt in his gut that social marketing management would be bigger than online video. “I recognized online video was not the path to scale,” says Bradford, who as company founder was in the throes of a major leadership challenge. “So I changed course, pivoted.” It turned out to be the right move, but having to tell customers that the value proposition he’d sold them was “wrong” and then revamp his management team wasn’t easy. “Those were scary times,” he says. “But it’s paying off in spades.” These days Vitrue delivers what Bradford describes as “a comprehensive social marketing platform,” including software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions that help brands and agencies manage their marketing potential through channels like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and emerging platforms. Vitrue currently manages more than 900 million relationships in 47 countries across more than 3,000 Facebook and Twitter accounts for clients like McDonald’s, Procter & Gamble, and AT&T. The numbers increase every day—as does the number of Vitrue employees (now approximately 175). Bradford, who played a lot of team sports growing up, says his leadership style is “like a coach during March Madness.” That means “you can’t ever get complacent and you always expect change.” Bradford gives his employees a lot of responsibility, and he holds them accountable. The way he leads his life—prioritizing “faith, family, and business”—is synonymous with the way he leads his company. “You want to make sure you’re a good role model,” he says. “That’s part of good leadership.” As Vitrue’s CEO, Bradford recognizes he’s the last line of defense. “There’s no other neck to choke,” he laughs. “It’s an awesome responsibility and it can overwhelm you if you let it.
