HUMAN FACTORS/HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION Human Factors (HF) is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system and the application of theories, principles, data and other methods of design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance. We take that as our charge, and note that we are especially concerned with the interaction of humans with computer systems, a domain generally known as Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Our program focuses on cognitive aspects of interaction (e.g., design of displays, procedures, and information) as opposed to physical aspects (e.g., design of keyboards and work stations).
