On almost all parts of the body, varicose veins are unsightly but harmless unless they cause pain, which is unusual. The exception is varicose veins in the testicles, which are associated with infertility. Below, we’ll explore the association between varicose veins and fertility, and your options for treatment. Varicose Veins in My Testicles
Selecting The Gender Of Your Baby
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that lie close to the skin. As many as 15% of all men are affected by them, but the number is much higher for men with infertility: about 40% of men with infertility have varicose veins in their testicles, also known as varicoceles.
How IUI Can Help You Get Pregnant
The correlation between varicose veins and infertility is not absolute. You may have varicose veins in the testicles and have absolutely no problems having a baby. Your doctor will probably recommend that you and your partner try for a baby for 6 months to a year before looking at treatment for varicoceles and the identification of other possible causes of infertility. Doctors believe that varicoceles can affect fertility by raising the temperature of the testicles, which must remain at an optimum temperature to produce sperm. It may cause a backup of blood supply to veins in the testicles. Treatment There are not studies that currently demonstrate that treating varicose veins will certainly improve fertility issues. However, doctors will generally treat larger varicose veins in men who are having difficulty conceiving. Even if the veins aren’t the only cause of infertility, treating them may improve the way you respond to other fertility treatments as well. The most common treatment for varicose veins in the testicles is surgery. Varicose vein surgery is a very minor surgery, but it is not without risks, such as infection and bleeding. Your doctor will talk to you about risks before performing the procedure, as well as how you can reduce the risk of certain side effects. During surgery, the doctor doesn’t make an incision in the testicles; instead, they access the testicles through the abdomen, near where the testicles descended originally. Then, the veins that supply blood to the varicoceles are cut, which essentially “starves” the varicoceles so that the body reabsorbs them. Only your doctor can determine whether or not surgery is right for you.
