As your plane slowly descends, preparing to land at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, look out your window and you will notice hundreds of large and small tropical islands fringed with white beaches. These are known as Jakarta’s Pulau Seribu, meaning the Thousand Islands. Well, there are, in fact, only around 110 islands there, but who is counting? The Pulau Seribu islands are the maritime playground for Jakarta’s population. Here one can enjoy the fresh sea breeze, walk barefoot on the soft white sand, or ride water scooters, banana boats and other adrenaline-pumping sports. In the evening be amazed when the sun sets behind the horizon giving a miraculous glow to the tropical sky, then sit down and enjoy a sumptuous seafood dinner on the beach. Further out into the Java Sea, the islands offer more fishing, snorkeling and diving opportunities. In colonial days Onrust Island was the VOC fortress to defend the city, - then called Batavia, - from invaders, and their ruins can still be seen here. The closer islands like Bidadari, Pulau Ayer and Kahyangan lie closest to the mainland, only some 15 to 20 minutes boat ride from Ancol, so some provide floating cottages, beach sports and more. Those further away are conservation areas for turtles, while for diving, the furthest islands offer clearer visibility. Speedboats leave Ancol Marina to various isiands at 08.00 am, and return around 02.00 pm. Other public sea transportation are available at Muara Angke terminal.

Islands within half an hour reach from Jakarta’s Ancol Marina are Bidadari, Ayer, and Rambut.
Amongst the furthermost islands from the Coast of Jakarta, these three islands are popular destination for leisure activity. Water around the islands is crystal clear with colorful coral reef and fishes swimming around. The beautiful underwater scenery with abundant fishes makes these islands an ideal diving and fishing spot, just 2,5 hours from Ancol Marina with speedboat.
Except for Pulau Rambut which is a sanctuary for migrating birds, the closer islands like Ayer and Bidadari are chiefly recreation islands, that come complete with “floating” cottages and water sports facilities such as banana boats, jet skis and more. Pulau Ayer’s cottages have interior decorations of exotic textiles and sculptures from the Asmat in Papua. While Bidadari also has floating cottages in Manado style.
Pulau Tidung Tidung is one of the largest islands in this cluster of islands. Comprising two islands, the Tidung Besar – or Large Tidung, and Tidung Kecil – or Small Tidung, these are connected by a long bridge romantically called the Bridge of Love. On this bridge young lovers pledge to love one another for the rest of their life while watching the sun slowly slipping into the sea lighting up the sky in wonderful colors. The islands are around 3 hours by speedboat from Muara Angke. They are ideal for snorkeling and are a center for coral reefs research.
Pulau Putri accommodates tourists with an ocean view cottages, diving facilities and equipment, glass-bottomed boats, and an underwater aquarium for the whole family to enjoy the scenery. Visitors are also able to enjoy a sunset in a cruise. Pulau Sepa provides a unique and exciting marine walk experience to the visitors. Donning the special equipment, tourists can enjoy the sensation of walking under the sea and feeding the wildlife. Even more, the island also provides a myriad of water sport such as snorkeling, scuba diving, Jet Ski, canoe, and many more. Pulau Pantara is an ideal island for group activities. The island facilitates 90 cottages and meeting room. The island also offers outdoor activities with the outbound adventure site built in the island.

Pulau Pramuka Pramuka is the main island and is the administrative center of the Pulau Seribu archipelago. For this reason it has the largest population and the best amenities complete with schools, mosques, and best internet connections. Pramuka is also a conservation and breeding island for hawksbill turtles and the protection of mangrove forests. Visitors are invited to release turtle hatchlings to sea and plant mangroves. There is also a butterfly reserve here where you can watch many colorful butterfly species appearing out of their cocoons. The waters near Pramuka are clear and great for snorkeling. Underwater photographers love to take macro-photos of strange little creatures that live in the sea. You can also feed sharks here which are luckily well protected in cages. Pulau Pramuka lies within 2.5 hours by speedboat from Ancol Marina or Muara Angle. Enjoy a sunset meal at the “floating” restaurant.

Onrust Island
As you go island hopping, make it a point to visit Onrust, which is a heritage and archaeological park. In the early 1600’s Onrust island used to be a busy fortress to defend the city of Batavia. Adjacent on Pulau Kelor one can still see remnants of a fortress called the Martello Bastion. Kahyangan were the shipyards of the VOC trading company. It is told that the Endeavour of famed explorer James Cook was repaired here in 1770. 9

EVENTS & CONCERTS As the center and hub of Indonesia’s government, business, trade and finance with a population over 10 million people, Jakarta is naturally where the action is. This is where producers and operators of cars and motorcycles, fashion, handicrafts, tours and travel, manufacturing, agriculture, heavy equipment, music, just name it, must appear to be recognized nationally and internationally. To meet demand, Jakarta has no less than 3 large Convention and Exhibition Halls, namely the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC) at Senayan, and the Jakarta International Exhibition Hall (JIE), Kemayoran, where the annual Java Jazz Concert is held, occupying no less than 9 stages in 9 different areas playing all at the same time. Meanwhile, the recently opened grand Indonesia Convention and Exhibition (ICE) halls offer multiple and spacious exhibition and convention space at BSD, a suburb on the outskirts of Jakarta, easily accessible by toll road. For more serious Music concerts, like the concert by Andrea Bocelli, organizers choose Ballrooms of hotels that have a capacity for 1000 persons and over. The latest addition is the Ciputra Artpreneur Theater at Casablanca Road, where large Musical Shows with original international casts are performed such as “Beauty and the Beast” and Andrew Lloyd Weber’s spectacular “Sound of Music”. But, for really large gigs, these can be staged at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, where in September 2015 Bon Jovi mesmerized a packed audience of 40,000 fans who came to Jakarta from other Indonesian cities and neighboring countries especially for the occasion. On the other hand, there are events that involve the whole city. The annual Jakarta Great Sale that takes place in June-July involves the participation of hundreds of malls across this metropolitan city. While the Jakarta Marathon, will have a track along a large part of roads that are normally jammed with vehicles, starting from the city center running north to the Old Batavia, or Kota Tua. All these roads will be closed for this special occasion. Therefore, Jakarta’s Calendar of Event is packed all year long with exciting happenings certainly not to be missed. 13

Located at Gelora Bung Karno Sport Complex, the convention hall was built at 1992. The building contained 13 various sized meeting rooms. With more than 5000 seats, the complex also had an underground access to Sultan Hotel, one of the most prestigious hotels in Jakarta.

The latest addition to Exhibition and Convention Facilities in Jakarta, ICE is located at the modern BSD city, just on the outskirts of Jakarta, conveniently accessible by toll road. ICE is managed by renowned Deutsche Messe. In all, it boasts of 10 large exhibition halls and Convention facilities that allow participation of no less than 3,200 delegates. This large hall can again be divided into halls for 2,000, or 1,000 or 500 participants as required. On its upper floors are more meeting rooms for breakout sessions.
This humongous sport complex stood proudly at the heart of Senayan area. With capacity of 88,000 people, this building was built to host the 1962 Asian Games. Nowadays, the complex also hosts mega-concerts of international superstars. Planetarium Jakarta’s Planetarium was built on the initiative of Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, who in 1964 instructed its construction. The Jakarta Planetarium and Observatory was finally opened by Jakarta’s Governor Ali Sadikin on 10 November 1968 sited within the Taman Ismail Marzuki Arts complex. Soekarno wanted the Indonesian people and especially its youth to learn not only about the world but also the Universe we live in. Today, Jakarta Planetarium is the only one in the country where daily shows of the universe can be enjoyed. Using the Universarium VIII Carl Zeiss Projector, audiences feel as being transported into space to observe planets and the multitude of stars. The one hour shows explain the solar structure, the earth, to the solar and lunar eclipses. Called the Theater of the Stars, shows are three times daily on Tuesdays through Thursdays 09.30, 11.0 and 13.30; Fridays twice daily at 09.30 and 13.30, and Saturdays and Sundays 4 times, at 10.00, 11.30, 13.00 and 14.30 hrs. Car Free Day
Every Sunday morning is now Car Free day in Jakarta. Held in the heart of this metropolitan city, the main avenues of Jalan Sudirman-Thamrin are completely cleared of motorized traffic to allow one and all to enjoy sports on the road. The purpose was, moreover, to reduce pollution in the city. Introduced in 2007, Car Free Day allows space for residents of Jakarta to stroll, jog and bike at leisure on roads that are normally packed with cars. The sports areas for the public also include the area around the National Monument, the Senayan Sports Complex and around Batavia Kota Tua plaza. At first intended to be held only 3 times a year, the idea gained momentum each year, and so today every Sunday Morning is Car Free Day. This has led other areas as well as cities to copy the idea. In Central Jakarta, Car Free Day is every Sunday from 06.00 am to 11.00 am, when Jalan Sudirman-Thamrin is closed to all traffic. In South Jakarta it is the Jalan Sisingamangaraja that connects directly with Jalan Sudirman; in North Jakarta, Jalan Kelapa Gading Park is closed on Sundays from 06.00 am to 10.00 am, and in the Bintaro suburb, Boulevard Bintaro Jaya is closed for Car Free Day from 06.00 am – 09.00 am every Sunday. The weekly closure of these normally jammed roads has reduced pollution in the surrounding areas providing better and healthier air quality for residents. On a visit to Jakarta, Lord Mayor of London admired the concept and is thinking of introducing this in London, while Paris has started to introduce the Car Free Day concept along the Champs Elysees.

Botanical Garden
A mere one hour drive south of Jakarta via the toll road, is the town of Bogor. Once called “Buitenzorg”, meaning Sans Souci, the Bogor Botanical Gardens lie right in the city center, while the Bogor Presidential Palace stands nestled as a gem amongst the green vegetation with imposing Mt. Salak volcano as its background. Built in 1744, both the extensive 150 hectares gardens and the Bogor Palace became the resident of Governor General Daendels and British Governor General Sir Stamford Raffles. In the gardens today stands a memorial dedicated to his wife, Olivia Raffles, who died in 1818. Take time to enjoy a leisurely walk across the paths and avenues lined with different species of flowering cannas, stroll by the manicured lawns and admire the 3,000 varieties of orchids found in the Orchid Garden, or just laze in the shade of large ancient trees. The Bogor Botanical Gardens counts over 400 species of palm trees, 5,000 different kinds of trees gathered from around the tropical world. Records show that the Bogor Botanical Gardens harbors 3,504 plant species, 1,273 genus in 199 families and therefore, contains the greatest number of specimens among the world’s Botanical Gardens. 28

riving up the road beyond the town of Bogor to the highest point in the road at Puncak, before the road descends down to Bandung, you will find swathes of undulating green tea plantations, with afar at the foot of the mountain the town of Bogor and on the horizon by the sea lies the city of Jakarta. This is Puncak Pass, playground of paragliders. The starting platform lies just before you reach the colonial style Puncak Restaurant on the left. From here gliders will jump and take to the skies to majestically glide down to the landing area, which is just where the tea plantations begin. In flight, gliders will enjoy flying free, accompanied only by the cool mountain breeze, looking down on a most scenic tropical panorama. Beginners are welcome, who, of course, will fly tandem with experienced instructors. On 9-17 August 2015 The World Paragliding Accuracy Championship was staged here in Puncak, the first time ever held outside Europe.

The Pinisi Edutainment Park, located on the 8th, 9th and 10th floor of the Pasaraya Building at Blok M in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, offers attractions for kids to teenagers from aged 2 years old to 16 years old.
Pinisi Edutainment Park It is unique that it provides fun for the children while introducing kids to their own culture, by immersing them in wayang stories and batik painting skills. The Park aims to educate children in technology, the arts, ecology, and innovation through games as well as through leisure activities and interactive experiences. Started in 2011 as a playground with carousel, bumper boats and the like, in 2012 the Park added a planetarium and classes in traditional arts and handicrafts. In 2013 a science center was added on the 8th floor.
The Park is open daily from 10.00 am – 07.00 pm. Through the week tickets cost Rp. 125,000 for kids from 1 year to 3 years old, while older children and adults pay Rp. 150,000. On Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays, adult tickets are Rp. 160,000.

A very popular attraction, on 1 January 2015 the Zoo received over 186,000 visitors in the one day. The previous location now houses the Taman Ismail Marzuki Art Center and Jakarta’s Planetarium and Observatory.

The Zoo is divided into several sectors. In the Reptiles division one can watch the prehistoric komodo dragons, pythons, king cobras, crocodiles and lizards. A Special enclosure covering 13 hectares called the Schmutzer Primate Center houses gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees and other apes in spacious natural environment. While, in the Birds sector one can watch colorful birds of paradise, cockatoos, flamingoes, hornbills flutter around, and pelicans and swans glide by. Among mammals are the endangered Sumatran tigers, lions, babirusa, tapirs, llamas and more. There is also an open range with wetlands, swamps and savannahs, where wild deer and bantengs roam free.

SAFARI PARK The Safari Park at Cisarua near the town of Bogor on the way up to the Puncak Pass, is Indonesia’s first safari park. Set in a jungle-like forest, animals roam free and even meet and greet visitors, who are, of course, safely protected within their cars. Zebras and deer will approach cars hoping for carrots, that can be bought before entering the Park. Private cars may enter the Park at a fee. Do make sure to close your windows especially when entering the lion’s park.

Covering an area of 170 hectares, here one can see up close tigers, sun bears, hippos, zebras, cheetahs and komodos “in the wild”. One can also walk in the birdcage. There is a Baby Zoo where children can take photos with cute baby lions, orangutans, and tigers. The Park has daily shows among which a Wild West Show and an Elephant Show. It also has Special exhibits of Humboldt penguins, wallabies and kangaroos. Those wishing to stay overnight can rent bungalows or go camping. There is also a Safari Waterpark and a sky lift for visitors to get a real bird’s eye view of the Park. Located 1-2 hours from Jakarta, best visit the Safari Park on Weekdays since the road up to Puncak is usually jammed on weekends and the Police enforce one way traffic alternately. The Safari Park is a wonderfully exciting and refreshing attraction for the entire family.
