Sometime after I arrived at MSU last fall I conducted a Google search for “Montana State University Library.” What showed up in Google’s Knowledge Graph display to the right of the search results was not the library in Bozeman I’d been hired to lead, but rather the MSU-Billings Library. Why? Because, it turns out there was no article in Wikipedia that established the MSU Library as an entity.

be left standing on the side of the road. Whether we like it or not, Wikipedia is a trusted source for that constituency that is almost exclusively responsible for helping us find things on the Internet: search engines. It provides the evidence for search engines that things – organizations, people, buildings, geographical features, etc. – exist and are relevant. MSU Library in Bozeman didn’t exist in Google’s eyes because we didn’t pay attention to Wikipedia. Numerous other entities and concepts having to do with libraries and academic institutions don’t yet exist in Wikipedia, either, because librarians have been slow in helping to create them.

good reason. Wikipedia actually operates under a strict set of rules that require “verifiable and trusted resources” for a topic before an article is accepted. The third-party resources required by Wikipedia are academic journal articles, scholarly Wikipedia is that online books, and mainstream encyclopedia that we love newspapers, among to malign but most of us others. What Does MSU Library Mean to You?

Jane Howard, Library Director of Donor Development

Recently I was having coffee with an MSU graduate who is now retired and still lives in Montana. This individual has numerous beloved children and grandchildren, many of whom are also MSU alumni. She reflected to me how important MSU has been to her success in life, both professionally and personally. Her MSU degree opened avenues for further specialized education, for travel, and for tremendous personal and professional opportunities, she said.

Kalyna Piasta

While we talked, I was surprised and gratified to learn that this alumna has included MSU Library in her will as one of the beneficiaries of her estate. She spoke of her pride and appreciation in being able to call MSU her alma mater, and the excellence she consistently experienced during her four years at MSU.

Amanda Schultz

Why did she choose to support the Library? Because MSU Library is essential to every student, and serves all aspects of the university community.

During Dead Week and Finals Week this spring, the MSU Library worked with Intermountain Therapy Animals to host therapy dogs in the library. For two hours each day for two weeks, students could pet, play, and “Paws to de-Stress” with dogs from the community. The program was a huge success and will continue this fall.

In the Library B O B C AT B R O W S E The MSU Library is pleased to announce the opening of Bobcat Browse, a new popular reading collection in the Library Commons. Here, you’ll find recommendations from faculty, staff, and students across campus, as well as new books in the library and popular magazines and journals. This new area has been met with great enthusiasm from the MSU community. During the development of the browsing collection, an MSU student commented, “Great idea! I’m continually impressed with the forward thinking of the Renne staff.” The Bobcat Browse logo was designed by MSU alum and library employee Michelle Gollehon.

The first major event hosted in the Bobcat Browse area was the Writer’s Voice Competition reception. MSU and Bozeman community members were invited to enter a writing competition to celebrate Life of Pi author Yann Martel’s keynote presentation at this year’s Freshman Convocation. The competition was sponsored by the MSU Library, the MSU Writing Center, and the Bozeman Public Library Foundation. Pictured to the left are President Waded Cruzado, Provost Martha Potvin, Associate Provost David Singel, and Yann Martel with the competition winners. The library plans to continue hosting events in this space. Bobcat Browse is located near Brewed Awakening. Next time you’re in the library, grab a cup of coffee, a pastry, and a good book!

The library offers free workshops and webinars on a variety of research, software, and social media topics, with the goal of targeting pertinent skills that will enable students and faculty to succeed. Workshops are taught by library faculty and staff across the organization, and colleagues often collaborate to coteach workshops, allowing us to offer more expertise and assistance. Topics are chosen both in response to patron requests, feedback and attendance, as well as on emerging trends and technologies that will most benefit our students and faculty. Library workshops are free and open to the public. Please stop by and join us sometime! Fa l l 2 0 1 3 • N o. 3 9 • w w w. f r i e n d s o f m s u l i b r a r y. c o m

MSU Library: The University’s Largest Classroom

MSU Library is one of the most happening places at MSU. As the second most visited building on campus, Renne Library hosts more than 25,000 visitors in a typical week during the school year. That number equates to nearly twice the entire MSU enrollment. Besides those who pass through our doors to study, write, research, take classes, and prepare presentations, at least twice as many access the library’s databases through online visits.
