Industrial Location and Regional Economic Development Lecture Outline European Faculty of Engineering Częstochowa University of Technology May 30-June 2, 2011 Introduction The lectures in this series are designed to introduce the student to key ideas and concepts in the fields of industrial location and regional economic development. The lectures will examine industrial location and regional economic development from both a theoretical and empirical perspective. For example, the lectures will include a review of the major location theories from both economics and geography and will use empirical examples to assess the utility of these various theories in understanding both historical and contemporary patterns of industrial location and regional development. While examples from around the world will be used there will be a focus on examples from the United States. Students will also be encouraged to assess the course material from the perspective of Poland’s economy. The format of these lectures will be to encourage discussion of the material that is presented Topic 1 The Perspective of Economic Geography This lecture will provide students with an understanding of the perspective of economic geography. It will describe the unique way in which economic geographers view the world with an emphasis on the concepts of location, place, and spatial relationships. Topic 2 The Structure of National Economies This lecture will focus on the employment structure of economies with a focus on the primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary sectors of the economy. It will explain how the relative importance of these different sectors varies over time and space and will highlight the factors that drive these temporal and spatial differences.

Topic 3 Location Theory: Weber’s Least Cost Theory of Location This lecture will introduce students to the classic location theory of the German economist Alfred Weber. It will outline the basic principles underlying Weber’s theory, provide examples of the theory in practice, and will assess the value of Weber’s theory in understanding the location of modern manufacturing industry. Topic 4 Location Theory: Christaller’s Central Place Theory This lecture will focus on the Central Place Theory of the German geographer Walter Christaller. It will outline the basic principles underlying Christaller’s theory, provide examples of the theory in practice, and will assess the value of Christaller’s theory in understanding the location of the modern service industry. Topic 5 Location Theory: The Product Life Cycle Model This lecture will examine the product life cycle model of and its implications for modern industry. This lecture will also introduce the concept of the spatial division of labor and its importance in understanding the location of industry. Topic 6 Spatial Interaction and Diffusion This lecture will examine the role that spatial interaction and diffusion plays in the modern economy. Using the framework of the gravity model and the concept of time-space convergence it will examine the way in which improvements in transportation and communication technologies have changed the structure and functioning of regional economies. Topic 7 The Role of Competition in the Modern Economy This lecture will explore the role of competition in the modern economy. It will examine the way in which competition has evolved over time and highlight how

the changing nature of competition has impacts the location of industry and the structure and functioning of regional economies. Topic 8 The Automobile Industry: A Case Study in Industrial Location The automobile industry is one of the world’s most important industries. It is an industry that dates from the late 19th century and is one that has experienced significant changes in terms of its geographical distribution. These lectures will examine the changing geography of the global automobile industry, with a particular focus on the changing relationship between the world’s two largest producers of automobiles – Japan and the United States. Topic 9 Regional Development This lecture will examine the concept of regional economic development. It will look at the different ways in which development can be defined and will review and critique the major theories of regional development. Topic 10 Industrial Clusters and Regional Development This lecture will examine the theory and practice of industrial clusters as a regional development tool. Industrial clusters are very popular all over the world as a mechanism for making industries and regions more competitive in the global economy. These lectures will examine the theory behind industrial clusters and will provide examples of specific clusters from around the world. Topic 11 The Role of Universities in Regional Development This lecture will examine the role of universities in regional development. Universities have a significant impact on a local economy simply by the fact that they employ local people and spend money in the local economy. However, universities are increasingly playing a more pro-active and strategic role in regional development through processes such as technology transfer and the creation of spin-off companies.

Topic 12 The Role of Social Networks in Regional Development This lecture will examine the role of social networks in the modern economy. All of us are members of social networks. Some of these networks are in our professional life (e.g. work) and others are in our private life (e.g. church). Sometimes professional and private networks overlap. As will be demonstrated by this lecture social networks are important in influencing our success as individuals and can be critical in determining the success of individual companies. Topic 13 The Role of Branding in Regional Development This lecture will examine the role of branding in the modern economy. In particular it will look at how branding can be used to promote the economic development objectives of a city or a region. The lecture will review the basic concepts of branding and then look at some specific examples of where branding has been used as an economic development tool. Topic 14 The Northwest Ohio Greenhouse Industry: A Case Study of an Industrial Cluster Since 2004 I have been working greenhouse industry in northwest Ohio helping its members to organize as an industrial cluster in order to address the competitive challenges that the industry is facing. These challenges include international competition, high energy costs, a stagnant market, and dated infrastructure and technology. These lectures will provide an insiders perspective on the challenges of developing a successful industrial cluster. Topic 15 Mega-trends in the Global Economy This lecture will highlight some of the mega-trends that will impact all of us in the upcoming decades. These trends include the continued rise of China as a global power, the decline of reliable information sources, and the rise of alternative sources of energy. These implications of these mega-trends for individuals, companies and regions will be discussed.
