PRAGYA: Wisdom that Leads to Realization PRAGYA is the annual students’ magazine of IITM which marks the culmination of all the academic, curricular and co-curricular activities undertaken every year towards the holistic development of the students. It departs greatly from the casual attitude of the normal students’ magazine and projects a professional image while providing a platform to the students to showcase their best acknowledged projects. A project is always an exhaustive and laborious affair. This academic exercise helps in the holistic development of the students. The various projects that the students undertake are a means for exhibiting their logical bent of mind. Any project is a work of immense hard work and toil as students successfully run dynamic online applications or do SWOT analysis, market surveys and research etc. The journey that the students undertake during their summer internship or projects bring in an enhanced knowledge set and understanding of concepts coupled with their implementation. The third issue of PRAGYA also carries reflections on contemporary issues through essays and gives a colorful kaleidoscopic view of the activities organized at the institute. Happy Reading! INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

IITM while on the journey to achieve excellence embarked on “Process Oriented Approach”. We identified processes, issued various academic circulars and administrative instructions to define various activities to be carried out for effective management of institutional systems. The projects carried out by the students at IITM are the result of this. Pragya gives a platform to showcase these projects and it is heartening to note that the fourth issue of Pragya is on its way. I congratulate the editorial team and invite suggestions and feedback from the readers so that this journey of wisdom is undertaken fruitfully.

STREAMLINING RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION PRACTICES IN HCL INFOSYSTEM -Sonal Arora

HCL Infosystems is one of the pioneers in the Indian IT market, with its origins in 1976 HCL Infosystems is among the leading players in all the segments comprising the domestic IT products, solutions and related services business, which includes PCs, servers, networking products, imaging & communication products. Its frontline Division has actively promoted the penetration of PCs in the home and the small office/home office (SOHO) segments, through Beanstalk PCs, Toshiba Laptops & Dragon Speech Recognition Systems. Mobility division deals with telecom business of HCL. It draws its strength from 30 years of experience in handling the ever changing IT scenario. HCL’s top management has formed its R&D Department, which focuses on the continuous innovation in order to make HCL the best in today’s cutthroat competition. HCL believes in “wealth maximization rather than profit maximization”. HCL implements, upgrades, enhance, rolls out and manages complete end-to-end ERP solutions for customers. The aim of this project is to study the recruitment process of HCL Infosystems Ltd &finding the gap in an elaborate manner. I took this project in order to understand the various aspects of recruitment like sources of recruitment, recruitment & selection process to

name a few in this company. It has helped me in gaining the in depth knowledge and to get acquainted with various processes related to recruitment like screening process and many more. This project has helped me in getting the knowledge related to the hiring procedure of an organization. The project involved learning about the head hunting process i.e. pulling right CVs from various sources like job portal, agencies etc, analyzing those CVs as per the requirement of the organization. Once candidates are identified, an organization can begin the selection process. The source of recruitment which is the most reliable according to HR team is job portal and then the referrals. Compensation fitment is the big problem which the recruiters face while recruiting and profile understanding creates a problem between the hiring manager and the business manager. These days, its not just salaries which pull the candidate in but various factors like brand, culture, location ,job security, reputation of the company etc play a major role in recruiting a talented professional. HCL is facing major challenges from its competitors in terms of product, revenue and human resources. It is on the path of facing the challenges effectively and moving towards success.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  TDS ON FOREIGN REMITTANCES AT STEEL AUTHORITY OF INDIA LIMITED -Himanshi Sabharwal The purpose of this report was to gain practical knowledge and experience on the working of an organisation. This internship report describes learning experiences during internship period. The report contains an overview of the company and the activities, tasks and projects that have been worked on during the internship. It also describes and reflects my learning objectives and personal goals that I had set during my internship period. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is the leading steel-making Company in India. It is a fully integrated iron and steel maker, producing both basic and special steels for domestic construction, engineering, power, railway, automotive and defence industries and for sale in export markets. Among the seven Maharatnas of the country's Central Public Sector Enterprises, SAIL is among the top five highest profit earning corporate of the country. With an annual production of 13.5 million metric tons, SAIL is the 14th largest steel producer in the world. This report starts with the profile of the company, where it gives the overview of the firm in brief, its vision, mission, products, structure of the company, market share, present leadership & position of the company. Further on, the SWOT analysis, functional analysis of the company has been done which gives an insight to the basic building blocks of the report.

It has been found that strong employee workforce with over 1,30,000 employees, having technical & managerial expertise in the industry is one of the strengths of SAIL. Whereas, ever changing Government policies, economic trends and increase in raw material costs are some of the threats faced by SAIL. SAIL's marketing set-up, the ISO 9001:2008 certified Central Marketing Organization (CMO), is India's largest industrial marketing set-up. CMO is primarily responsible for marketing of steel items, including carbon, alloy and special steel products, produced by the steel plants of SAIL. While doing functional analysis it has been observed that SAIL, is in the process of modernizing and expanding its production units, raw material resources and other facilities to maintain its dominant position in the Indian steel market. The objective is to achieve a production capacity of 26.2 MTPA of Hot Metal from the base level production of 14.6 MTPA (2006-07 – Actual). This internship report also provides an overview of tax on foreign remittances and objective and coverage of Section 195 of Income Tax Act, 1961. Finally the report ends with a conclusion that describes the work experience gained by me in the company. It also briefly explains the conceptual and practical clarity gained during summer training in terms of practices followed by the company in different functional areas of management.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  IITM KNOWLEDGE PORTAL -Lakshay Verma The existing system of the organization i.e. the IITMKP provides basic necessities like uploading and downloading the notes. The notes/Lesson plans are uploaded by the faculty of the particular subjects and any student who will login into the system can download the same. All the notifications are updated by the administration of the system. Also the administrator assigns roles of a particular user by granting the type of access level. Depending upon the type of user and their access level, functionalities are provided like uploading /downloading of notes. Also the users can view and download information related to college from the notification section. The system “IITM KNOWLEDGE PORTAL” which is under development is able to deal with the latest technology providing the data/notes in the best effective manner i.e. in a secure, faster & reliable manner. The system starts with an identification/authentication process which validates only authenticated user to enter the system. Once a validated user enters into the system, it will be given with access depending on the type of user. If a user is of administrator type then it will be given access level of top priority that means the user can create roles, update them or delete them. The user is able to update the notification area on regular basis. If a user is of faculty type then the access level is of medium type that means the user can upload notes, download them, can view the notification and download notification and is able to communicate with the other logged in members. If a user is of student type then the access level is low type that means a user can download notes and notifications only, the user is also able to communicate with the other logged in members through the chat process. It contains the following modules: 1. Login: - This is the initial process of the system. A user must log into the system in order to access the information on the system.

Also deleting and modifying the files into the system. 6. Upload Notes: - The process helps in uploading the files to the system. Also deleting and modifying the files into the system. 7. Notice Board: -This process updates the latest information about the organization on the system. 8. Registration: - This process creates user for the system. The improvement in a project can always be done by upgrading the present scope to a larger one, like in the case of our project. Its scope can be broadened to allow different colleges to have access, which would allow different students and teachers to communicate and access wider range of material and, the scope of improvement is very vast as more and more modules can be added to provide assistance to the users. Hence, improving on the project means just to upgrade the present system. The aim of the project has been to design a system which solves the problem access to the material, as for now student had to come to college for notes and different notices. This also provides all the details and material required by student or teachers in easily available form at the same place. So in our project we have included various facilities to provide notes that students can access. There is a special feature in our system that is a chat process through which students and teachers can interact with each other. In case of doubts or some emergency notices all such problems can be solved with this process. There are many more facilities available with our system; this is a gist of all the facilities available in our system. Guide: Ms. Ramandeep Kaur Assistant Professor IITM

Aggarwal

The purpose of this project is to analyze and elaborate on features of the Telephone Management System. It focuses on how quickly to enter the records and that the procedure should be easy to follow and easy to update and fetch records whenever needed. VB.net is used as front end and MYSQL Server is for back end. Various functions and structures are used to make a complete use of the language and to develop best forms and best layout to make the access easy and maintainable. This project is well versed with the programming. With “Telephone Management System” it would be tedious to handle the records of the telecommunication company manually. The Software Requirements Specification captures all the requirements in a single document. The Telephone Management System that is developed to provide a faster and more efficient way of recording the customer connection details into the company’s database. The whole project was divided into three phases-Introduction and project planning, System Analysis & Systems Requirement Specification (SRS). Introduction and project planning, was about the introduction of the organization and project management, which was related to the use of schedules such as Gantt charts to plan and subsequently report progress within the project environment. The second phase was system analysis wherein more emphasis was given to understanding the details of an existing system or a proposed one and then deciding whether the proposed system is desirable and whether the existing system needs improvements. So, it was all about investigating a system, identifying problems, and using the information to recommend improvements to the system. The third and final phase of summer training was SRS, a structured collection of information that embodies the requirements of a system and a detailed statement of the effects that a system is required to achieve.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  LEAVE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AT IOCL (PIPELINES DIVISION), NOIDA -Neeti Gaur This project aims at providing employees and management members of IOCL, Noida with the information that can be beneficial both personally and professionally to them. Every business enterprise has multiple objectives including adequate profit for payment of a reasonable rate of return to the owners and for investment in business through satisfaction of customers, maintenance of a contended workforce and creation of a public image. The basic job of management of any organisation is the effective utilization of available human resources, technological, financial and physical resources for the achievement of the organisation objectives. This project entitled as “Leave Management System at IOCL (Pipelines Division), Noida” was done to evaluate the satisfaction level of employees towards online leave management system at IOCL, Noida. The study undertakes various efforts to analyze the various factors of leave system in great detail. From the study, some of the important issues regarding online leave management system by the employees were found. It is also clear from

Neeti Gaur MBA –III Enroll. No.: 03713703912 Batch: 2012-2014

the study that the company is so eager in developing their employees so as they can meet with the changing need of the technology. The human resource can play an important role in the realization of the objectives. Employees work in the organisation for the satisfaction of their needs. If the human resources are not properly motivated, the management will not be able to accomplish the desired results. Therefore, human resources should be managed with utmost care to inspire, encourage and impel them to contribute their maximum for the achievement of the business objectives. This project work helps to increase the efficiency and management of human capital without retargeting the work efficiency within the department or over the organisation. The project helps to allocate the leave efficiency and also aims to optimize the leave system to get the real time and value for scheduling the work for the present & future as per human capital or work force available to execute the work efficiency of the organisation.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  ANALYSIS ON FINANCIAL FEATURES OF CIPLA LTD. FOR FEBRUARY 2014 AND ITS COMPARISON WITH CNX PHARMA -Niti Suri The objective of the project is to study the future prices on different dates and comparison of open interest and the turnover over the period of the time and make a comparison of CIPLA Limited with CNX Pharma. Derivatives are defined as financial instruments whose value derived from the prices of one or more other assets such as equity securities, fixed income securities, foreign currencies, or commodities. Derivatives are also a king of contract between two counterparts to exchange payments linked to the prices of underlying assets. In Finance, a futures contract (more colloquially, futures) is a standardized contract between two parties to buy or sell a specified asset of standardized quantity and quality for a price agreed upon today (the future price) with delivery and payment occurring at a specified future date, the delivery date. It has been concluded that the market is bearish in nature and shows the downward trend. It also shows that the market is not going according to the expectations of the shareholder; there is tremendous decrease in the settle price. As settle price was 418.6 on 3rd February, 2014 which falls to 385.3 on 28th February, 2014. There is

Niti Suri MBA –IV Enroll. No.: 02913703912 Batch: 2012-2014

tremendous increase in the OI & Turnover. This increase is due to the contracts which are being done on a daily basis. As a result more investors are available to contribute to the turnover. It shows a direct relationship between OI and turnover as they both are increasing day by day. The correlation between the OI and turnover is 0.986782 which is positive because of their direct relationship. As we have observed earlier that the market is bearish in nature because of tremendous decrease in the settle price and the market is not going according to the expectations of the shareholders. The volume is showing a tremendous increase over the days so there is an inverse relationship between settle price and volume of trade. On 19th and 20th February high fluctuations are observed. Hence there is decrease in settle price and an increase in the volume traded. At the end I can say that CNX Pharma is showing an increasing trend over the days and has performed very well but Cipla Limited has not performed satisfactorily as compared to CNX Pharma and other players in the market. Cipla Limited has not provided fundamental support to the index because company shows the decreasing trend over the days. This project helped me in getting thorough understanding of this universal concept.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  REPORTS REPERTOIRE:  MAJOR PROJECTS ROLE OF ADVERTISING LIKING ON PURCHASE INTENTION Advertising is any paid form of non-personal communication about an organization or its product to a target audience through a mass/broadcast medium by an identified sponsor. It is supposed to be a significant way of getting the point across about a product and to create motivation for people to buy. This study basically focuses on the role of advertising in influencing consumer purchase decision. To accomplish the task, a survey was carried in and around West Delhi with a sample of 100 respondents taken on a random basis approaching the individuals exposed to advertisements. A structured questionnaire was prepared and administered and the data so collected was analyzed both by percentages and statistical methods. 92% respondents stated that advertising is essential and majority of the customers feel Preeti Singh BBA (M1) - VI Enroll. -Preeti Singh advertisements affect their desire to purchase or explore products and services. The collected data was also analyzed to have an understanding of the impact of advertising for the different sets of respondents. Because buyers must act on the basis of incomplete information, they automatically and consciously incur a risk in every purchase and non-purchase decision. Advertising is a form of communication intended to convince an audience (viewers, readers or listeners) to purchase or take some action upon products, information or services etc. The purchase process is a decision making process under risk. Therefore, marketers should try and focus to attract and influence the customers by designing advertisements that are considerably attractive for consumers and persuasive enough for their emotional attachment with the product. STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION TOWARDS SOCIAL MEDIA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO WHATSAPP This study has been carried out as part of Major Project Report for BBA 6th semester. WhatsApp messenger is a proprietary cross platform instant messaging subscription service for smart phones with internet access. In addition to text messaging users can send each other images, video and audio media messages. WhatsApp Inc. was founded in 2009 by American Brian Acton and Ukranian Jan Koum, both former employees of Yahoo and is based in Mountain View, Santa Clara County, California. Currently WhatsApp has 500 million active users worldwide. In India alone it has around 50 million active users. The fact that there are no distracting ads helps WhatsApp retain users. Objectives of the study include- To understand students’ behavior towards WhatsApp; comparing students’ perception about WhatsApp with other social Sanya Kathuria BBA (E1) - VI Enroll. STUDENT’S PERCEPTION TOWARDS STUDYING ABROAD -Dinesh Bhatia

International education for college students may be on the rise given the foreseeable advantages to studying abroad, such as traveling and increasing foreign language proficiency. Perhaps the students who are more competitive, motivated, and seek new experiences are the ones who most often take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad. They are likely the serious young scholars who seek experiences not available at home. But studying abroad may also develop such admirable characteristics as curiosity and adventurism in students. Whatever students’ inspirations are for leaving their comfortable routine at college to spend some years/months studying in a foreign country, anecdotal evidence suggests that they are affected by the experience. The universal knowledge gained by studying abroad and the opportunities to interact with people of various cultures may help to break down cultural barriers and enable students of all ages to connect larger social issues and their own life experiences. Theoretically, the development of international sensitivity and global understanding strengthens student’s perspectives to include a general recognition of human conditions within a social-ecological framework. Whether an interest in cultures propels students to study abroad or rather is generated from

Dinesh Bhatia BBA (M2) - VI Enroll. No.: 07513701711 Batch: 2011-2014

studying abroad (or both), it reasonably links cultures together through the people who are intrigued by diversity. Studying abroad may actively influence the attitudes of our nation’s future leaders by developing an appreciation and respect for other people through cultural curiosity. Study abroad programs essentially seek to expand student’s perspectives of the world by instructing cultural and foreign language studies, arranging for students to live with foreigners, and providing opportunities for travel. Studying foreign languages and conversing with people of different backgrounds allows one to learn about the values, beliefs, customs, and behaviors that are central to a culture. In the pursuit of academic study in a foreign culture, an individual is eventually immersed into a new society to function as the natives do. By providing practical ways of engaging with cultures like cooking traditional foods and participating in recreational activities, international education may foster a sense of appreciation for lifestyles other than one’s own. For this purpose, the students of IITM have been undertaken for the study. The project report was concluded with the suggestions to improve the study by overcoming these limitations.

It is intended to help the administrator and employee to register complete detail of employee. The complete detail of the employees could be managed in form of transition tables. This software is meant to delineate the features of EMS, so as to serve as a guide to the developers on one hand and a software validation document for the prospective client on the other. Asp.net is used as front end and SQL Server is for back end. Various functions and structures are used to make a complete use of this language.

Aman Sharma BCA (M) - VI Enroll. No.: 06513702011 Batch: 2011-2014

The basic scope or we could say that the actual boundary of Employee Management System (EMS) is to: •

Manage the employee detail in such a way that there should not occur any kind of trouble for Administrator to sort out the problem regarding employee management. Create & Preserve Salary Details of each employee and provide them salary slip as & when required. The salary created will be based upon the overall formula keeping in mind the constraints such as HRA, TA, DA & number of unpaid leaves taken by an employee. Create a record of leaves taken by each employee.

This project has few limitations which can be overcome in the near future. Some of them are: Project is meant for small scale establishments, all entries in the form are to be completely filled. In the near future the project can be further enhanced to include a multitude of features.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  ONLINE VIDEO DOWNLOADING -Sakshi Dewangan The project entitled "Online Video Downloading" (Bling Downloader) is an attempt to provide an interface which helps the user to watch the desired videos online & even download the videos. The users can comment on the video after logging in and share their views. This project was developed using PHP as a front end design tool and MySql server 2008 as a backend tool. The whole project is divided into four phases i.e. Introduction, System Analysis, Systems Design and Systems Development. Introduction briefly describes the proposed system, the method adopted and tools required. System Analysis and Software Requirements Specification (SRS) describe the functioning of information system under study in narrative form in details like use case diagram, DFD and ERD. It also contains the activity diagrams and the sequence diagrams of the processes; namely login, registration, search videos, download videos and add or delete videos. The final chapters contain all the interfaces of the web page along with its validations. It gives the complete description of the project. Video Downloader allows millions of users to discover watch and share their views with other viewers over the internet. It also allows viewers to download the videos by registering themselves. However, uploading and removal of videos is controlled by the administrator to

ensure against absurd content. Users can download videos by registering themselves and by paying the required amount. It exploits the computer technology with the Internet facility. Thus, this project aims at designing such software which could provide quality videos and easy and friendly interfaces to users. The project contains login module to enter the details of the user or administrator such as e-mail id and password. Search Video searches the video by any of its defined keywords or category. Video Maintenance involves the adding of latest videos and deletion of videos if necessary. Video Downloader allows users to download the videos of their choice for which being logged in is a necessity. As per future requirement, the software can be expanded. Users can share i.e. add or delete their own videos which after authentication will be available for public view. Beautification of the system can also be done to give it a more standard look in the future. These are the few benefits of this system which would not need any investment. With the future scope mentioned above, this project can be further improved with new skills & advancing technology.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  ONLINE MAQUILLAGE WEBSITE USING PHP -Nitin Chaudhary Online Maquillage will be a website that will help the user to get online features about various cosmetic products as well as purchase them online without getting out of their homes. Online Maquillage is a form of electronic commerce which allows consumers to directly buy goods or services from a seller over the Internet using a web browser. Alternative names are: e-web-store, e-shop, e-store, Internet shop, web-shop, web-store, online store, and virtual store. An online shop evokes the physical analogy of buying products or services at a bricks and-mortar retailer or shopping centre; the process is called Businessto-Consumer (B2C) online shopping. In the case where a business buys from another business, the process is called Business-to-Business (B2B) online shopping. Retail success is no longer all about physical stores, this is evident because of the increase in retailers now offering online store interfaces for consumers. With the growth of online shopping, comes a wealth of new market footprint coverage opportunities for stores that can appropriately cater to offshore market demands and service requirements. The main aim of this project was to develop an interactive and dynamic website that provides the customer with an on-the-click functionality to search for their desired products over a wide range of products and buy them easily and at any time according to the user’s convenience. This project seeks to provide online facility to get features about various electronic products as well as purchase them online from home, office or anywhere. Some of these processes function independently whereas as a few others

are linked to each other. The system must provide the flexibility of generating the features of the required product on screen as well as purchasing them when required. The entire description of each process with related inputs, outputs and data item will be illustrated in depth in chapter’s session. This information system consists of various processes which imbibe in themselves the various goals of the website. This project consists of various modules like registration, user login, product category, purchase cart, payment process, admin login, stock management. The whole project was divided into four phases Introduction and Project Planning, System Analysis, Systems Requirement Specification (SRS) and System Development. Introduction and project planning, was about the introduction of the organization and project management, which was related to the use of schedules such as Gantt charts to plan and subsequently report progress within the project environment. The second phase was system analysis wherein more emphasis was given to understanding the details of an existing system or a proposed one and then deciding whether the proposed system is desirable or not and whether the existing system needs improvements. So, it was all about investigating a system, identifying problems, and using the information to recommend improvements to the system. The third phase of this major project was SRS, a structured collection of information that embodies the requirements of a system and a detailed statement of the effects that a system is required to achieve. And then final stage was developing the website according to the SRS and the planning done in the stages. Also performing various validation checks and testing.

INDUSTRIAL SICKNESS: A CASE STUDY ON CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN INDIA POST LIBERALIZATION -Dipinder Kaur

Incidence of industrial sickness is a continuous process and at a particular time some units in a particular industry will be running sick even if the industrial climate is favourable from all points of view. Its analogy can be understood from a society in which some are healthy, some are of medium health, some are sick and others are recouping from sickness. Similar case is with industrial units. Continuous sickness leads to closure. Hence, to avoid closure of industrial unit one has to act much in advance before the incidence of closure takes place. The effort should be to arrest or minimize the rate of sickness. Moreover, prompt action is needed as soon as the symptoms of sickness are visible. All possible remedial measures should be taken at this stage rather than making a hue and cry when the unit is actually dead. In this present paper an attempt has been made to explore the quantum of sickness in Small Scale Industries in India. Small Scale Industries play very important role in the economic development of any developing or under developing country. These industries encourage selfsufficiency, self-reliance and co-ordination. In spite of its importance, the Small Scale Sector is beset with the problem of sickness.

Dipinder Kaur BBA-III M1 Enroll.No.: 04713701712 Batch: 2012-15

The sickness has been acute and adversely affecting production and employment in the country besides other socio-economic repercussions, so there is a need to identify sickness in the initial stages and to initiate the process of corrective measure and revive rehabilitation before the sickness assumes a serious proportion. An industrial unit is considered sick when its financial position is not satisfactory and it further deteriorates year after year. It incurs losses and its capital reserves may be stretched out in course of time. The increasing trend in industrial sickness touching all types of units including Small, Medium and Large Scale Industrial Sectors, but Small Scale Industries are more prone to sickness as compared to medium and large scale industries. The smallscale industrial (SSI) sector is the worst hit. A number of Small Scale Industries are either born sick or stay sick. The earlier the detection of sickness, the earlier will be the remedy for sickness. As soon as they are detected as sick, immediate actions require curing them. The reasons for sickness are different in different units. The main reasons of sickness are management failure, non-availability of raw materials, power cuts, labour unrest, marketing problem etc. The project amply provided me with an opportunity to comprehend and understand the concept by citing the case of chemical industry in India.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH -Minali Maheshwari Occupational safety and health is an area concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. All organizations have a duty of care to ensure that employees and any other person who may be affected by the companies undertaking remain safe at all times. The main focus in occupational health is on three different objectives: (i) the maintenance and promotion of workers’ health and working capacity; (ii) the improvement of working environment and work to become conducive to safety and health and (iii) development of work organizations and working cultures in a direction which supports health and safety at work and in doing so also promotes a positive social climate and smooth operation and may enhance productivity of the undertakings. hazards that cause or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to the employees. Accident prevention is a major goal of safety management. Accident investigation and measurement can supply useful data for developing effective safety programmes and improving working conditions. Industrial safety has direct relation to employees’ productivity. Safety contributes to team work, higher morale, and higher productivity. Safety measures prevent accident and thereby considerably control costs involved in compensation, medical aid, loss of production, damage to machinery, spoilage of materials, etc. Further, rules and regulations prescribed under labour laws require employers to provide certain minimum safety measures to their employees. Hence, every employer should pay adequate attention to industrial safety not only for the benefit of the workers but also in the interest.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  RAILWAY RESERVATION SYSTEM -Mukund Bansal &Nitin Duggal The project entitled as “Railway Reservation system” is an attempt to computerize the day to day activities of booking of ticket at the railway ticket counter. Indian Railways (IR) is an Indian state-owned enterprise, owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railways. It is one of the world's largest railway networks comprising 115,000 km (71,000 mi) of track over a route of 65,000 km (40,000 mi) and 7,500 stations. As of December 2012, it transported over 25 million passengers daily (over 9 billion on an annual basis). In 2011, IR carried over 8,900 million passengers’ annually or more than 24 million passengers daily (roughly half of which were suburban passengers) and 2.8 million tons of freight daily. In 2011–2012 Indian Railways had revenues of 1,119,848.9 million (US$19 billion) which consists of 696,759.7 million (US$12 billion) from freight and 286,455.2 million (US$4.9 billion) from passengers tickets. The objective of developing such a computerized system is to reduce the paper work and saving time in railway reservation management thereby increasing the efficiency and decreasing the work load, Java (JDK (1.5.1)) and Oracle 10g were used as a software platform to implement the system. This information system consists of various processes which imbibe in themselves the various goals of Railway Reservation. Some of these processes function independently whereas as a few others are linked to each other. Login Process was designed so that the registered customer can login into the system. Enquiry Process was designed so that customer can enquire about the various trains and there timing. Reservation process was designed to help user to book online ticket of its train.

Booking status process was designed to help customer to check the current status of the booked ticket. Cancellation process was designed to help customer wants to cancel the booked ticket can do the same but 48 hours before the Chart Preparation. Some nominal charges are charged for the cancellation of the ticket. This system was designed, keeping in mind all the limitations of existing system and this system is basically concerned with booking ticket, cancelling ticket, checking Booking status etc. As we know the manual processing is quite tedious, time consuming, less accurate in comparison to computerized processing. It creates a lot of problems due to wrong entries or mistakes in totalling etc. This system avoided such mistakes through proper checks and validation control methods in checking of Customer record, Booking, Cancellation, Booking status etc.The whole project was divided into three phases - Introduction and project planning, System Analysis & Systems Requirement Specification (SRS).Introduction and project planning, was about the introduction of the organization and project management, which was related to the use of schedules such as Gantt charts to plan and subsequently report progress within the project environment. The third and final phase of summer training was SRS, a structured collection of information that embodies the requirements of a system and a detailed statement of the effects that a system is required to achieve.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  ISCSI: THE FUTURE OF NETWORK STORAGE -

Introduction In this new era of computing, data storage has changed its role from secondary with respect to CPU and RAM to primary importance. In general, networked storage architectures have evolved from Network-Attached Storage (NAS), Storage Area Network (SAN) to most recent storage over IP (IP SAN). NAS architecture allows a storage system/device to be directly connected to a standard network, typically via Ethernet. SAN technology, on the other hand, provides a simple block level interface for manipulating non-volatile magnetic media. Internet SCSI (iSCSI) is the most recently emerging technology with the goal of implementing the IP SAN. In computing, iSCSI, is an acronym for Internet Small Computer System Interface, an Internet Protocol (IP)based storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities. By carrying SCSI commands over IP networks, iSCSI is used to facilitate data transfers over intranets and to manage storage over long distances. ISCSI can be used to transmit data over Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs), or the Internet and can enable location- independent data storage and retrieval. The protocol allows clients (called initiators) to send SCSI commands (CDBs) to SCSI storage devices (targets) on remote servers. It is a storage area network (SAN) protocol, allowing organizations to consolidate storage into data centre storage arrays while providing hosts (such as database and web servers) with the illusion of locally attached disks. Architecture Essentially, STICS is a cache that bridges the protocol and speed disparities between SCSI and IP. Its basic components are as follow: 1. SCSI interface: STICS supports SCSI communications with hosts and other extended storage devices. Via the SCSI interface, STICS may run under two different modes: initiator mode or target mode.

PRAGYA 2013-14

Sapna Gupta

2. Ethernet interface: Via the network interface, a STICS can be connected to the Internet and share storage with other STICS’s or NAS. 3. Intelligent processing unit: This processing unit has an embedded processor and an amount of RAM. A Specialized Log- structured file system, standard SCSI protocols, and IP protocols run on the processing unit 4. A log disk: The log disk is a sequentially accessed device. It is used to cache write data along with the NVRAM above in the processing unit. The log disk and the NVRAM form a two-level hierarchical cache. 5. Storage device: The regular storage device is an optional component. It can be a disk, a RAID, or JustBunch-Of-Disks (JBOD). It is used as an extra nd backup storage capacity. Working of iSCSI When an end user or application sends a request, the operating system generates the appropriate SCSI commands and data request which then go through encapsulation and if necessary, encryption procedures. A packet header is added before the resulting IP packets are transmitted over an Ethernet connection. When a packet is received, it is decrypted (if it was encrypted before transmission), and disassembled, separating the SCSI commands and request. The SCSI commands are sent on to the SCSI controller, and from there to the SCSI storage device. Because iSCSI is bi-directional, the protocol can also be used to return data in response to the original request. Applications 1. The use of familiar network technology and management reduces training and staff costs, and increases stability and reliability of an organization's infrastructure. 2. iSCSI is scalable over long distance or in a Local Area Network, enabling remote data replication and disaster recovery. 3. Standard firewall and security measures can be used to protect an organization's data. 4. There is no need to have large trunks of dark fibre or other communications infrastructure deployed,

with accompanying contract and SLA management. An organization's security need not be compromised by the theft of a laptop, for example, since no confidential data need be stored on the thin client. Provides a high degree of interoperability – reduces disparate networks and cabling, and uses regular Ethernet switches instead of special fibre Channel switches Ethernet transmissions can travel over the Global IP Network and therefore have no practical distance limitations

Drawbacks 1.

2.

It is limited by TCP window size i.e. it cannot achieve maximum throughput on a single TCP connection. TCP packets may get lost causing delay in delivery of subsequent packets. If packets are lost next iSCSI headers cannot be found.

3. 4.

TCP checksum is not sufficient for storage data integrity. TCP usually entails multiple copying of data.

Conclusion Organizations with changing data requirements, especially those requiring data storage security or disaster recovery will benefit most from the introduction of IP storage and iSCSI. As performance increases and iSCSI SANs become ubiquitous, they will gradually be integrated into enterprise TCP/IP networks. Distributed intelligent services and automated allocation of storage resources via virtualization will become an integral part of the future evolution of iSCSI SANs. ISCSI is seen as a cheaper alternative to Fiber Channel SANs. The IP wave of technology development and enhancements like the introduction of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, iSCSI provides a logical unified infrastructure development path for corporations and service providers alike.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  ARTICLE ON FUTURE PROGRAMMING TECHNIQUES Introduction A programming language is an artificial language designed to communicate instructions to a machine, particularly a computer. Programming languages can be used to create programs that control the behavior of a machine and/or to express algorithms. Many programming languages require computation to be specified in an imperative form (i.e., as a sequence of operations to perform), while other languages utilize other forms of program specification such as the declarative form (i.e. the desired result is specified, not how to achieve it).The description of a programming language is usually split into the two components of syntax (form) and semantics (meaning).

- Arun Sharma an interactive source-level debugger. The programmers have done least to address the core problems such as creating comprehensive test suites, finding bugs and security vulnerabilities in code, finding the proper documentation, example code snippets. Today, all of these tasks must be done manually by humans, which is slow, error-prone, and costly. Future Programming Technology There will be drastic improvements in automatic test case generation, software bug finding, code verification, and information retrieval tools will make it far easier for a programmer in the year 2030 to quickly write and revise software that is reliable, maintainable, and malleable.

Future Programming Scenarios Automatic Test Case Generation Different approaches to programming have developed over time, being identified as such either at the time or retrospectively. The various old programming techniques are: Machine Code (mid 1960s), Procedural languages (1960 to 1975), Object-oriented programming and Modular Programming. Modern tools and compiler tricks mean that higher level abstractions (where you hand low level control over to your tools) can actually provide better performance. The trend is inexorably towards higher level languages and tools. The programming environment is also changing. The two major changes areas follow: a) Distributed processing where the platform a program may be running on is no longer a single machine or processor b) Virtual environments where a program is an object in a 3D virtual world Current Programming Technology A typical modern-day programmer spends most of his work time interfacing with an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) on his computer. Within the IDE, he can browse through the entire project tree of source code, navigate via auto-generated 'hyperlinks' to jump across files (e.g., by clicking on a function call site, he can navigate to the function's definition), write and compile code, run automated tests, and debug via

PRAGYA 2013-14

The IDE will constantly be running as many relevant tests as possible all the time while the programmer is working, which will provide nearly-instant feedback when semantic bugs arise. Programmers can not only save the context-switching time of manually running tests, but more importantly, can identify and fix bugs more effectively. Automatic Bug Finding Compilers of the future will be able to perform far more sophisticated static analysis that can find deeper bugs, thanks again to enormous available computational power. These futuristic compilers will be able to instantly compile code and report bugs in the form of messages. With the help of such intelligent advices by the compilers the larger project will be easy to handle and programmer can efficiently manage the software. Code Verification: Code verification is a far tougher problem than bug finding. Imagine that every evening while programmers are at home sleeping, all of their desktop machines and data centers will be connected together into a cluster of hundreds of thousands of CPUs cranking simultaneously on verifying some property of the latest version of the code base. Then when programmers return to work the following

62

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  morning, they receive an email report showing which properties still remain properly verified and which ones were broken due to the prior day's code edits. Information Retrieval: Programmers must retrieve and comprehend information about the given software system and its multitude of components before they are able to make effective contributions to it. Today, this information retrieval task is a tedious manual process. In future, computers will fluently assist in these programming-related information retrieval tasks. Just like how Google do, when a new programmer is browsing through a particular piece of code, his computer can make informed suggestions for who are the best people to contact if he has a question about that code.

Conclusion: As the more fast machines were developed so the new programming techniques were developed. After the development of programming paradigm, the technology was also developed so that a programmer can efficiently develop programs. New IDE with intelligence compilers, fast CPU’s were developed. Automatic code generator IDEs were also developed so that programmers have to write less and can do more. But, still there is so much of scope for the improvement in programming world. According to our needs in the future, the creation of new programming languages and techniques will continue to communicate with different types of machines.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  HIGHER EDUCATION IN INDIA Education is the most crucial investment in human development. Education strongly influences improvement in health, hygiene, demographic profile, productivity and practically all that is connected with the quality of life. The policies and approach to investment in the Education sector and its development in the next decade assumes critical significance from this standpoint. University and Higher Education: The excellence of our university products and professionals is well acknowledged both at home and abroad. The competitive advantage of the country can be maintained and improved only if the university and higher education sectors perform well. Their contribution to improving our capability to interact effectively with the fast expanding global technoeconomic systems has been significant and their potential needs to be harnessed to the full. Open University System: The Open University System is offering a broad-based curricular content in humanities, social sciences, physical and natural sciences as well as in professional disciplines like agriculture, computer applications, education, engineering, management, nursing, nutrition, etc. The institutes of correspondence education of the dual mode universities registered an enrolment of about 7 lakhs. In addition, the four open universities had an aggregate enrolment of over 8 lakhs. Technical Education: There has been substantial growth of technical education during the post-Independence period. The number of technical institutions at the first degree level increased from 49 in 1950-51 to 418 in 1996-97. The output of technical graduates increased from a level of 2200 in 1951 to about one lakh per annum. For diploma courses, the increase was from 2480 to 1.7 lakh annually. Postgraduate and Doctoral programmes in engineering are now available in 150 institutions. About 60 polytechnics offer advanced and post- diploma courses, most of them initiated during the Eighth Plan under the Technical Education Project assisted by the World Bank. The four Technical Teachers Training Institutions have assisted in the development of more than 500 polytechnics under this scheme. Achievements During the Eighth Plan Period: The major emphasis in higher education during the Eighth Plan was on (i) integrated approach to higher education, (ii) excellence and equity, (iii) relevance of higher education, (iv) promotion of value education and (v) strengthening of management system in university institutions.

PRAGYA 2013-14

In order to provide facilities for higher education, particularly to the deprived sections of the population and neglected regions of the country, several new universities and colleges were opened, particularly in the NorthEastern region. Special efforts were made to provide facilities for specialized groups like SCs, STs and women. The new facilities include increased intake and greater utilization of distance education mode. Mobility of the faculty and students has been facilitated by expanding the schemes of staff quarters and student hostels. Management Education: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is entrusted with the responsibility of regulating, controlling and ensuring the quality of Management Education in the country. The formation of a National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and organization of a number of workshops contributed substantially to widespread awareness and concern for quality in Management Education. For regulating the entry of new institutions, the AICTE developed an effective and transparent evaluation system based on certain norms and standards which were developed in active collaboration with the leading management academicians. The critical norms related to curriculum development, academic standards, admission process, number and quality of faculty members and the governance system. Women's Empowerment: The National Agenda for Governance also states: "We will institute plans for providing free education for girls up to college level, i.e. under-graduate level including professional courses would be made free". An adequate provision will be made for the scheme for this purpose during the 9th Five Year Plan. On a long-term basis and in close collaboration with State and local governments, the financial implications of making education free for girls upto the graduation level will be worked out, in so far as these relate to the Department of Education. Management Education: In view of the emerging needs of Indian economy, the new dimensions of management education and research have necessitated technology up gradation to achieve quality control, use of information technology for overall improvement in output and performance as well as competitiveness. There is an imperative need for networking and linkages between leading management institutes, university departments of management and centers of management education, especially in private sector on the one hand and industrial establishments and user organisations on the other.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  Ninth Plan Out-Lay and Physical Targets: The basic agenda for the Ninth Plan is to fulfill the objectives of Article 45 of the Constitution by charting out a clear course of action to make primary education free and compulsory up to Vth standard, though the ultimate object

is to universalize up to VIIIth Standard. This phasing is necessary because of the resource constraint on one hand and enormous complexity of the problem on the other.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  FINGERPRINT RECOGNITION SYSTEM BY NEURAL NETWORKS -

Shruti Gupta

As we enter the new millennium, identification is used for almost everything nowadays. With technology on a rapid pace of improvement, the need for accurate identification is very necessary, especially with the increased use of automated transactions. Humans have certain unique properties in them. The study of these properties is called biometrics. Biometrics is the ability to automatically recognize a person using distinguishing traits such as fingerprints, face, retina or iris from the eye, voice, and hand geometry. Each of these methods of recognition has advantages and disadvantages. With the online shopping getting more and more popular, transactions on the internet have brought many security problems to surface as people often give out their personal information and credit card number for each of their purchases. Many times, a person’s credit card number can be stolen and misused. If a biometric recognition system is applied, it can help reducing the risk of shopping online to an extent.

2.1 Sectorization and Normalization: The fingerprint image needs to be normalized so that no differences in brightness or contrast exist throughout the image. Furthermore, sectorization is used in the next step in the process –feature extraction. The 6 Gabor Filters used are lined up with 12 sectors in each band. 2.2 Gabor Filtering: By applying Gabor filters, we are able to remove noises, preserve ridge and furrow structures, and provide information contained in certain direction of the image. 2.3 Feature Vector - Variance Calculation: After obtaining the 6 Gabor filtered images, the variance of pixel values in each sector is calculated. This variance gives an idea of the concentration of ridges in each direction in that sector. Higher variance values imply that the ridges in the sector were in a more similar direction to that angle of the Gabor filter, while lower variance values imply that the ridges were in other directions and were thus filtered out.

1. Method

2. Post-Processing

1. PRE-PROCESSING: Fingerprint database consisting of different people is collected. 60 images for each were collected.

Mean Nearest Neighbor: Mean nearest neighbor is chosen as the classifier. One feature vector from each individual person is calculated from the training set and then saved in the database for future matching. The feature vectors in the database are gathered from better quality images.

1.1 Center Point Determination: Initially, A Reference Point, Or Center Point, must be determined. The center point is found at the point of maximum curvature of ridge lines. 1.2 Minutiae Detection: A minutiae is a pattern of the low of the ridges or valleys. A fingerprint can have number of minutiae’s. The minutiae’s can be distinguished and classified into many different types.Image Orientation: A major obstacle in fingerprint recognition is that the images obtained are not usually perfectly aligned. Usually rotation and displacement of some sort is evident. To adjust for this, rotation of the input image is performed.

2. Main Process

3. Results & Conclusion Overall, the center point determination algorithm did not give precise results. Noise and low image resolution are important factors that these images possess. Better quality images may result in improved center points. However, the algorithm used is not accurate in general. As for the minutiae detection algorithm, it did not function very effectively. The main reason for this was the presence of noise in the fingerprint images. The process takes in a threshold value and binaries the image. Therefore, noise values are attributed to a 0 or 1 and affect the results greatly.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  EXPRESSIONS REFORMS IN EDUCATION SECTOR -

Sukrit Kapoor

Education is an oft repeated word that has the most significant role in shaping our lives. Education plays a very important role in our development, growth and livelihood. We all know that life has been evolving ever since it was discovered and therefore everything also is bound to evolve and same is the case with ‘Education’. To cater to every person’s knowledge the education system has been evolving ever since the early 1800s. Academic reformsfulfill the demand of improving the education system as well as catering to the changing needs of the society.

there were demerits and merits both! But for students in that batch everything went uncertain in the near future. But then it also made us aware of our strong points which would help us shape our future. The second major reform that we students were a witness to was of adding of value based questions in our board examination. A radical reform has happened with the advent of digital education in primary classes in India. The internet communication capabilities make it potentially useful for better knowledge and also the computer’s ability to stimulate physical systems makes it potentially useful in teaching science.

A stated motivation has been to reduce cost to students and society at the same time increasing their knowledge. The reforms take many forms and directions throughout history and present day the meaning and methods of educations have changed through debates over what content and experiences result in an educated result or society.

However some reforms have not had the expected beneficial impact for instance the much hyped reform at the university level introduced in the year 2013 consequently in 2014 the University Grants Commission has asked the University of Delhi to roll back FYUP which has led to a series of chain reactions namely, problems for the B.TECH students, BMS students to name a few.

A lot of us were impacted by a very significant part of an education reform. The school batch of 2009-2010 knows what is an education reform namely the intense CCE (CONTINOUS & COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION) enforced by the Central Board of Secondary Education. We were made to adjust to the changes to the methods of evaluation in between the midterm examination as they were called before FA and SA(s) came into light. Certainly

We all agree that the improvements in the education system are for our better development and we do need reforms but it should be ensured that the procedure goes through fewer bumps on its way to implementation.

INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & MANAGMENT  TAE-KWON-DO

- Divyajit Devgan Taekwondo a style of fighting that originated in Korea and that uses kicks and punches but no weapons "Tae" means "foot" or "to strike with the feet". "Kwon" means "hand", or "to strike with the hand". "Do" means discipline, art, or way. Hence Taekwondo (foot-hand-way) means literally "the art of the feet and the hands" or "the art of kicking and punching". It is characterized by the use of high standing and jump kicks as well as punches and is practiced for sport, self-defense, and spiritual development. In sparring, blows are stopped just short of contact. Origin Based on earlier forms of Korean self-defense, tae kwon do was formalized and named in 1955. Taekwondo- As a self Defense for Women: Taekwondo martial arts or otherwise called fighting arts is a practice and tradition of combat. All kind of martial arts has the same objective of physically defeating another person or defending oneself from physical harm or threat. Some martial arts are associated with beliefs while others follow a code of honour. It is considered as an art and a science. Taekwondo is not only for men but also for women. Women are found to be weaker in physical strength as

compared to men. The need of women to learn taekwondo is increasing nowadays because of increasing incidents of rape and harassment. But if a girl has knowledge about some self defence techniques, she would easily be able to handle the situation and defend herself. Aside from this benefit of protecting yourself, taekwondo can improve awareness of the mind and body. The mental strength will be improved as you master the art of focusing. You will be able to focus more on your daily task and improve your level of alertness even with small details of what is happening around you. Concentration is very important in taekwondo training. To be an effective martial arts student you must be able to picture out your success as you go along with the training. Learning Taekwondo can improve one’s physical and mental health. Feeling stronger mentally will give you the sense of security to be able to manage any dangerous situations that might occur. It will build up your self confidence to handle any physical threatening circumstances. Throughout the training you will learn the movements and their impact on your body as well as on opponent. Knowing when to strike or hit and how to do it properly will give you the strength with your full body potential.
