Students understand that the United States and Canada share a number of cultural characteristics such as language, religion, and standard of living. Students will understand how natural resources, agriculture, technology, transportation, and respect for individual freedoms have encouraged economic growth in both the United States and Canada making both countries global economic powers. Students explore the present-day challenges of each country and describe how these problems might affect their economies and citizens. Based on physical features, cultural characteristics, and economic activities, students should be able to identify, locate, and give characteristics of the four distinct functional regions of the United States and the five distinct functional regions of Canada.
