French 7-8 Syllabus

Hoover High School

Course Goals and Design This is an advanced class in French language and francophone cultures. The three modes of communication (Interpersonal, Interpretive and Presentational) as defined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century are the foundation to the French 7-8 course. Students who enroll in this course should already have a good command of the grammar and considerable competence in listening, reading, speaking and writing. This class serves as a pre-AP course in most cases, with the goal of improving students’ chances of success on the AP French exam the following year. Many of the materials are the same as those used in AP, which is taught in the same classroom at the same time. However, 7-8 students will not have to perform at the same level as the AP students in the class on the assignments in class, homework will be considerably less, and there will be one less primary textbook. Eleventh grade students are expected to continue on to AP French in their senior year wherever possible.

All skills, listening, oral, writing and reading are spread out during a typical week. Students are encouraged to seek additional resources that will enhance all skills. All speaking and writing assignments will be graded according to the new AP rubric

Listening comprehension Students are exposed to short films and movies in order to improve their comprehension skills. Music videos, CDs and teacher recorded news segments, documentaries, game shows from TV 5, France24, are used in the classroom in order to enhance discussions. Excerpts from the movies listed below will also be included regularly.

Reading comprehension Reading is a daily activity in the French classroom. Students read Francophone literary works such as short stories, poems, textbook cultural passages, and authentic articles on various current events from several francophone countries.

Writing skills Students in the AP French language class write full length compositions with a time limit of 40 minutes every week. Errors are always circled but not corrected by the teacher and it is the responsibility of the student to correct their errors. All compositions will have transitional words (i.e. puis, ensuite, enfin…) in order to enhance the flow of the composition. Students will re-write the compositions in class after correcting their errors. Students will be graded according to the new AP rubric. Students will have no use of dictionaries or other notes. Students will also practice e-mail writing as it is described in the AP French and Culture book (Ladd 2012).

Speaking skills The AP French language course will include partner activities as well as group activities each week. Students will do video projects, discuss movies and will develop and perform Interpretive Communication skills related to the 6 thematic topics in class. Students are also encouraged to sing songs, learn and recite fables from French 1 to AP to develop the French ear. They will be required to speak in French during class, as the entire class will be conducted in French. Oral communication grades are determined using the new AP rubric.
