Inventory for Dementia Training and Education in the Champlain Region This inventory is intended to provide an overview of some the training and education programs focused on d ementia and a vailable in the Champlain Region for h ealth care providers. Many of the resources noted in this document are also found in more detail in the Behavioural Education and Training Supports Inventory ( BETSI). Behavioural Supports Ontario ( BSO) has published the Behavioural Education and Training Supports Inventory ( BETSI) Decision Making Framework, an education/training d ecision making tool and program inventory, for anyone interested in providing safe, quality patient-‐centered care for older adults with responsive b ehaviors. http://akeresourcecentre.org/betsi . BETSI assists providers, a gencies and facilities b y strengthening the capacity of p lanners to choose the most appropriate of education programs and effectively support the application of n ew knowledge into practice; enabling teams to provide clients with the right care, at the right time a nd in the right p lace. The BSO Capacity Building Roadmap and BETSI Framework should b e used by those who n eed to make decisions a bout what education is required to manage and better s erve the target population, and also b y those who provide collaborative care for the target population and make education-‐related d ecisions. It is appropriate for RN, RPN PSW, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and other professionals in the Health or Social Services field.
CDN Primer Resource A document d eveloped with the intent to provide LTC Home or Retirement Home staff with a brief resource of information and skills to h elp them interact with residents who have dementia and to b e used to assist with the orientation of new h ires.

CDN Primer Resource The resource’s full title is ““What you need to know to work with persons with dementia… A Primer for those starting to work in dementia care.” It is not meant to b e a comprehensive resource of dementia training but a guide. There are three suggested formats for incorporating the DVDs suggested to accompany using the Dementia Primer resource.

Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) can assist staff to de-‐escalate the person with dementia. They also learn respectful escort techniques to manage catastrophic behaviours.
Reframe challenging behaviour to be interpreted as s elf-‐ protective or responsive behaviour that occurs as a result of unmet n eeds, thus encouraging staff to assess the meaning of the behaviour and work a longside the resident/patient/cli ent.
