Beineinu - Between Us I never liked the word disabled. It is such a negative term. It implies there is something wrong with someone, that they are somehow less than others - less capable, less valuable. That is not a Jewish idea. Judaism teaches that every single person in the world has an equal and unique value and the world only exists on their account. The Torah records that “the entire people saw the sounds” of revelation at Sinai. Our sages understand this to mean that the revelation was a synesthetic experience where our senses blended together; it was what educators today call multi-modal, designed to be equally accessible to and inclusive of each individual, regardless of their abilities. Through this interpretation, the rabbis teach us an important lesson: There is no such thing as being disabled, only being differently abled. Every one of us brings different talents, abilities, sensibilities and insights. We all know this in theory and affirm the importance of inclusion, but we are not always as good at it as we should be. Here in our own synagogue, we have become increasingly sensitive to the need for inclusion. I am proud that we have large print and braille siddurim available, our sanctuary has hearing devices, our Torah table adjusts for wheelchairs and our chapel has a ramp. We provide nut-free and gluten-free foods, and we work hard to provide support within our school for those with different learning styles. But, there is much more we can do. Our front doors are too heavy for some to open. There is no listening system available in other spaces in our building. Paper drink cups at kiddushes and receptions are too hard for someone with a tremor to hold. The list goes on. Inclusion is not just about physical issues. It also means welcoming the child with autism or the person who has a tic and letting them know we are happy they are here. It means welcoming those with different learning and behavioral styles into our social groupings. (continued on page 14)

President’s Message

With the approach of the month of May, the year has come full circle for me, marking one year as president of B’nai Jeshurun. Over the past 12 months, I have deepened my knowledge of the workings of the congregation, and I am indebted to our clergy and staff for their consistent efforts. I work with our clergy, staff, a committed and able team of officers, trustees, committee chairs and committee members who provide opportunities for participation in synagogue life through services, programming, educational opportunities and social justice. They also work behind the scenes to maintain our financial health, catering opportunities, library access, security and the structural integrity of our building, to name just a few. I am appreciative of the work of our many lay leaders and volunteers who step forward in so many capacities to support our congregation with their time, skill and philanthropy. At the annual meeting on May 7, we will recognize the contributions of several members who have distinguished themselves through their volunteer efforts. Please join us as we honor Judy & Jim McConnell for their many volunteer activities with the Rabbi Rudolph M. Rosenthal Outstanding Family Award and present the Joseph M. Lomberg Award for Outstanding Individual Service to our two extraordinary minyan leaders, Max Wiznitzer and Robert Zelwin. The Paul M. Koret Distinguished Teacher Award will be presented to Susan Wyner for her years of service as a respected educator. At the annual meeting, we will also recognize retiring lay leaders. I want to thank trustees Richard Berkowitz, Mark Doris, Zehava Galun and Marla Wolf for their work on the board and on committees. I look forward to their continued participation on synagogue committees. Vice President Beth Rosenberg will be stepping off the officer team. I want to thank Beth for her work as an officer of the congregation and as co-chair of the Leadership and Governance Committee since its inception three years ago. Our congregation will continue to benefit from the work of these dedicated leaders. Shelley Scher

This month, we will have multiple celebrations starting with Yom Ha’Atzmaut and concluding the month with Shavuot. In essence, these celebrations are connected. Independence Day celebrates modern Israel and the miracles we have witnessed to see Israel’s existence. It is a wonderful blessing to have our own homeland, to thrive as Jews and a civilization. It is truly miraculous and defies all logic. Faced with insurmountable odds and continued efforts by surrounding nations to destroy us, we continue to flourish. Several failed wars, thousands of terrorist attacks, lethal weaponry, yet here we are. To be able to practice our religion in the holiest country in the world, to see Israel’s continued contribution to medicine, technology and democracy in the Middle East is mind-blowing. At the end of the month, we will celebrate Shavuot and the giving of the Torah, the freedom to worship G-d without persecution. The Israelites traveled through the desert with the ultimate goal of living in Israel. Each tribe was given a region to live in. Unfortunately, we were uprooted multiple times while living in Israel as other nations conquered the land. We have lived in Israel for thousands of years. Many people have died and much blood has been shed to safeguard the country. We should celebrate Israel, not just in the modern era, as our history has been tied to Israel since biblical times. The love and passion of past generations should be recognized during this celebration. While other nations don’t recognize our ties to Israel, past or present, we ought to be mindful of the sacrifices made by our ancestors. Am Yisrael Chai – May Israel continue to prosper and flourish. Please join us on May 21st for an exciting musical performance featuring Josh Nelson and Pey Dalid (see the front page for details). Pey Dalid’s live performance is an uplifting experience filled with relentless guitar licks, big beat drums and three-part harmonies. Joshua Nelson combines Jewish liturgical lyrics with one of America’s best-known indigenous musical forms, Gospel. It will be a wonderful and enjoyable show. Cantor Aaron Shifman

Education & Youth This month, we conclude the third book of the Torah, Leviticus. The last parasha of the book, Bechukotai, largely focuses on the blessings the Israelites will receive if they follow the Torah and mitzvot, and the curses that await if they fail to do so. While it might be nice to believe we are justly rewarded (or punished) for our actions, our experience in the world teaches us differently. We constantly ask why bad things are happening to good people, or perhaps why someone is rewarded when they appear to be undeserving. I prefer to look at the list of blessings and curses at the end of Leviticus as a reminder that we must work to develop habits that lead to a life of mitzvot.

The Sefat Emet, a 19th Century Hasidic Rabbi, writes about his concern with the potentially corrosive effect of our habits. Even ‘good habits’ can be of concern if they become rote, causing us to forget we are meant to be serving God. Israel is summoned by God to Mt. Sinai in order to have a revelatory moment, to break the grip of habit and routine. The final verse of Leviticus states, “These are the commandments which the Lord commanded Moses for the Israelites on Mount Sinai.” The Talmud Yerushalmi states, “these are the commandments—if you do them as commandments, then they are commandments; but if you don’t do them as commandments, they are not commandments.” Performing the mitzvot is necessary, but not sufficient if we are performing them for ulterior motives. Our goal must be to become aware of our motives so we thoughtfully develop habits that help us practice the ideals embodied by Torah and mitzvot. Hazak, hazak, v’nithazek

Flags for Memorial Day On Memorial Day, a United States flag is traditionally placed on the graves of those who served our country. At our Jewish cemeteries, members of local Jewish War Veterans Posts perform this mitzvah, except at Chesterland Memorial Park, which is outside of Cuyahoga County. If you would like to assist in the placing of flags at Chesterland, or would like to help the JWV at other cemeteries, please contact Bernice Rothman (440-449-0172). Member Spotlight Rose & Art Gelbart

Rose & Art have been BJC members since 2003. Rose won the Men’s Club cholent cook-off twice. They are regular shul goers and both are Holocaust Survivors. Rose is president of the NEO chapter of the World Federation of Jewish Child Survivors of the Holocaust and Descendents (WFJCSHD) and sits on their national board. Art is a past president of Kol Israel. They both lecture throughout the area with Face to Face. Their company, M&G Flooring, has been in business for over 50 years. They started out as H&F Flooring in a building they built at 1446 SOM Center Rd. in Mayfield Heights (which now houses Hot or Mild and Indo American Convenient Grocery). Originally partnering with Herman Frank and Abe Lipshut, they specialize in commercial and residential flooring, including walls. Today, Rose & Art are the sole owners of the business. They pride themselves on delivering exceptional service using expert installers and direct-from-the-mill pricing. They installed the carpeting on the floor and walls in the recently renovated Nickman Chapel, as well as the carpeting in the David J. Moskowitz Sanctuary. The ceramic flooring and walls at the Italian restaurant at the Hard Rock Rocksino is another notable project of theirs. Call Art for an appointment (216-577-0826). There is no obligation and the consultation is free.

Yahrzeits by Email Beginning with yahrzeits for the week of June 3-9, 2017 (listed in the Shabbat handout on June 2 & 3), we will be emailing your letters of observance instead of mailing them if we have your email address. If we are missing it, you will receive the letter by post, along with a request to provide your email address. This is part of the synagogue’s continuing efforts to reduce costs and be environmentally conscious. Please watch your email to make sure we are on your safe list so we don’t end up in your spam folder. If you prefer to continue to receive your notices by mail instead of email, please advise Diane Shalom.

As part of United Synagogue’s Ruderman Project, our Inclusion Committee, chaired by Cheryl Wikas, will be examining ways we can improve inclusion in the synagogue. I hope you will join us in this task which will enable us to learn how we can all move forward together in a way that leaves no one behind and recognizes that each one of us is holy and precious in God’s eyes; each one of us has unique gifts to bring to the world and is deserving of our loving embrace.
