ALANDARENKO Mikhail - Ukraine Radio Free Europe - Journalist Radio Free Europe‘s mission is to promote democratic values and institutions by reporting the news in countries where a free press is banned by the government or not fully established. Lovely city, liked it very much, apart from the fact that the whole country was then ruled by Saddam Hussein. Write radio reports, place news on the site. Also occasionally contribute to some other media, e.g. Russia’s Vremya Novostei daily. Love my job, although feel no special pride about it. KADIOGLU Ayşe – Turkey Council of Europe – Group of Eminent Persons / Sabanci University - Professor

Council of Europe’s Group of Eminent Persons - In co-operation with the Turkish Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers (November 2010 – May 2011), Thorbjørn Jagland has proposed to create a Group of Eminent Persons in order to prepare a report within the context of the the Pan-European project Living together in 21st century Europe to be submitted to the Committee of Ministers prior to Istanbul Ministerial of 11 May 2011. The “European model” with the values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law is today challenged because of the resurgence of intolerance and discrimination. Over the past few years all Council of Europe Member States have been affected by deteriorating social ties, radicalisation and increasing gaps between different communities within our societies. Tolerance, mutual respect and acceptance of diversity are preconditions to learn how to “live together”. The Group of Eminent Persons will help the Council of Europe, as guardian of the European Convention on Human Rights, to deal with new challenges for security and stability of European citizens. The group consists of 9 high-ranking individuals with a specific expertise and a particular interest in the subject. Joschka Fischer is the Chairman. Edward Mortimer will be the rapporteur responsible for preparing the draft report. The other members are: Timothy Garton Ash, Emma Bonino, Martin Hirsch, Danuta Hubner, Ayşe Kadıoğlu, Sonja Licht, Vladimir Lukin and Javier Solana Madariaga.

Ayşe Kadıoğlu is one of the 9 nine members of the CoE’s Group of Eminent Persons and she is also a professor of Political Science at Sabancı University, Istanbul. She became one of the 9 members of the Group of Eminent Persons of the Council of Europe upon the invitation of the General Secretary. The Group will prepare a report about living together in Europe in the 21st century by May 2011. Professor Kadioglu has spent the 2009-2010 academic year as the Sabancı Fellow at the University of Oxford. She holds a PhD in Political Science, Boston University (1990) and an MA in International Relations, The University of Chicago (1984). Her main areas of interest are Citizenship Studies, Political Ideologies in Europe and Turkey, and Women in Muslim Societies. She is the author of various articles in Middle East Journal, Middle Eastern Politics, International Migration, Muslim World, Citizenship Studies, Critique: Critical Middle Eastern Studies, Middle East Law and Governance, Philosophy and Social Criticism.

LASFAR Nor-Dine – The Netherlands NTR – Documentary Director NTR is the independent Dutch public service broadcaster specialising in information, education and culture. NTR’s themes are based on the statutory duties of the three public service broadcasters which in 2010 merged into NTR: NPS, Teleac and RVU. NTR is independent and nonaffiliated, and can focus entirely on substance. NTR wants to make high-quality programmes for everyone – programmes that educate people and enrich their lives. Nor-Dine Lasfar – I was born 1975 in Morocco and migrated as a young child in 1978 to Amsterdam, Holland where my father was working. After secondary school I studied economics but later I became a documentary filmmaker. I started as a journalist working for a TV programme of NTR. Later I wanted to make my own films and left that job to make my first documentary, which eventually premiered at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA, largest documentary festival in the world) 2007. The film was titled ‘Panna!’. It is an account of two talented young soccer players which I followed for a year in a defining period of their lives. They both lived in a deprived area of Amsterdam and the only way out for them was to make it as a professional soccer player. The documentary tells about their struggle to make it to the pro’s and about how difficult it is for young talented individuals from that deprived neighboorhood to break out of their social background and succeed in life. After that film I have continued to work as a director on different projects both on documentary level and on reports. With its awareness of being the first university of the Turkish Republic, and under the light of Atatürk’s revolutionary ideas and principles of the Republic, Ankara University is locked on to the target of reaching the highest level of modern civilization under the guidance of reason and science. European Media Encounter / Rencontre Médiatique Européenne – Istanbul – Who’s Who - p. 50

'' Promoting intercultural dialogue is a collective responsibility but it is also down to individuals. That is the message of the Council of Europe's Speak out against discrimination campaign. And since the media and media professionals have a major role to play in combating discrimination and encouraging intercultural dialogue, the Council of Europe has sought to involve all the media industry's players (publishers, regulators, etc) and have them debate and propose solutions for promoting a culture of tolerance and mutual understanding, bearing in mind the media's contribution to informing the public and forming opinion. ''
