J. for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development (8 papers in press) Regular Issues Antecedents of network strength in foreign-owned subsidiaries: locational, expatriate, and industrial conditions by Sven Dahms Abstract: Although the effects of networks on numerous outcome variables, such as performance or innovation, have been investigated multiple times in the foreign-owned subsidiary literature, relatively little is known about the antecedents of network relationships. This research addresses this gap in applying configuration theory and network perspectives in order to explain network relationship strength in foreign-owned subsidiaries located in the mid-range emerging economy of Taiwan. The data collected from a large scale survey is analysed using fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis method. The results show that there are a number of different solutions that can lead to increased network strength. These solutions, consisting of industrial, locational, and expatriate conditions, also vary with the kind of network. We hence find strong support for equifinality in MNE networks, local nonbusiness networks, and local business networks strength development. Keywords: foreign-owned subsidiaries; fuzzy sets; expatriates; global cities; geographic distance; fsQCA; networks. International women entrepreneurs and international opportunity recognition skills for start-up ventures by Imtiaz Mostafiz, Goh See Kwong Abstract: Entrepreneurship is an alternative employment source for women in many nations. It has been shown that entrepreneurship is often a male-dominated sphere. However, women with proper skills, knowledge, learning, and support can flourish in entrepreneurial activities. The aim of this paper is to provide deeper insights on international women entrepreneurship by focusing on the success factors of women entrepreneurs, international opportunity recognition skills, and performance of start-up ventures. Building on the extant literature of human capital, social network relationships, and entrepreneurship literature, this study presents a conceptual model predicting the performance of new start-up ventures of women entrepreneurs. The article concludes with important theoretical and practical research implications and provides future research avenues. Keywords: women entrepreneurship; human capital; social network; work-life support; and international opportunity recognition skills. Innovation, dynamic capabilities and family firms operating in an emerging economy by Abel Duarte Alonso, Seamus O'Brien, Seng Kok Abstract: Drawing on the dynamic capabilities framework (DCF), this exploratory study examines family firms involvement in innovation practices, including reasons and ways to innovate. The cases of four family firms operating in an emerging economy (Uruguay) are investigated. Semi-structured, face-to-face and telephone interviews were conducted with owners and managers, and complemented with email correspondence. Based on the need to solve problems in their industry, firms management were intensively involved in various innovative processes. These processes included quality improvements, responding to a dynamic and competitive business and consumer environment, and extending the life and survival of the family enterprise for future generations. Notably, the importance of sensing and learning in the form of identifying and assimilating key information, and seizing, applying such information to develop or adopt innovation, including new technologies, emerged strongly. The findings also highlight the usefulness of the DCF to understand firms integration, and transformation of learning. Keywords: innovation; innovative practices; dynamic capabilities; family firms; emerging economy. Financial risk management and financial performance of new small business ventures: evidence from Indian survey data by Amarjit Gill, Léo-Paul Dana, John D. Obradovich Abstract: This study examines the perceived association between financial risk management and beliefs of small business owners about the financial performance of their new small business ventures in the service and manufacturing industries of India. The survey shows that the perceived valuation of financial risk management positively affects the beliefs of small business owners about the financial performance of their new small business ventures in both the service and manufacturing industries of India. Results show that financial performance is significantly higher among new small business ventures with adequate internal financing sources relative to new small business ventures without adequate internal financing sources. This study contributes to the literature on the relationship between financial risk management and financial performance of new small business ventures. The findings may be useful for financial managers, production and service firm owners, investors, consultants, and other stakeholders. Keywords: financial risk management; financial plan; financial performance; new small business ventures; service industry; manufacturing industry; India. DOI: 10.1504/JIBED.2018.10012197 Let's generate ideas - a review of web-based crowd sourcing tools for the basis of entrepreneurship by Katharina Fellnhofer, Wolfgang Pree Abstract: The main aim of this paper is to review web-based tools designed for generating and documenting business ideas. The paper first reviews related literature and then discusses useful instruments relevant for creative entrepreneurial tasks. These tools can be helpful in the initial phase of entrepreneurial activities. While several factors are crucial for successful ideas and their implementation, the discussed web-based idea generation tools might assist in creating, evaluating and selecting entrepreneurial ideas. The aim of this manuscript is to provide an overview of such tools so that scholars and practitioners can select a tool that is appropriate for their purpose. As future work we plan an in-depth empirical investigation of these tools. Keywords: web-based tool; idea generation; crowd sourcing tool; entrepreneurial ideas. DOI: 10.1504/JIBED.2018.10012206 Conceptualising entrepreneurial orientation dimensions and female business performance in developing economies by Murat Sakir Erogul, Fanny Adams Quagrainie Abstract: There is little understanding of factors that inform entrepreneurial orientation dimensions (EOD) with business performance in the context of developing economies. In an effort to determine how this association is manifested among women entrepreneurs in developing economies (WEDE), the paper examines the existing literature, and provides the current state in how these women create and sustain their businesses. In order to analyse the effectiveness of EODs among WEDEs, a five-EOD model is examined through the findings from the extant literature. The examination of EODs and business performance indicators is done within the context of developing economies. The review of the literature has led to the identification of 'ethics' as an additional EOD associated with business performance. The emergence of a new EOD provides value towards understanding the different cultural settings within which women entrepreneurs operate, and demonstrates the multi-dimensional nature and value of entrepreneurship. Keywords: female entrepreneurship; entrepreneurial orientation dimensions; EODs; business performance; developing economies; ethics. DOI: 10.1504/JIBED.2018.10012216 Franchisee actions trigger franchisor power strategy alterations by Muhammad Khan Rahatullah, Robert Raeside Abstract: This study offers insight on how conflicts in hybrid relationship business may arise and affect its performance. This study of the franchise relationships provides views of 124 UK franchisors. Validation interviews from eight academics, franchisors and practitioners validate the findings. It is concluded that franchisers endeavour to keep B2B relationship sustaining and flourishing which denotes the ultimate expression of hybrid relationships. The franchisor strategy on power greatly depends on franchisee behaviour and the exercise of the power by them may vary accordingly. Prevalence of conflicts between two partners negatively impacts the franchise system. Size and age of the franchise influences the use of power. Conflicts also trigger change in future plans of the franchisor. Hence the accruing strategy could be different and dynamic at each stage of the life cycle and varies based on business size. Keywords: franchisor; franchisee; relationships strategy; power strategy changes. DOI: 10.1504/JIBED.2018.10012221 Entrepreneurial leadership and performance of small and medium sized enterprises: a structural equation modelling approach by Lawan Shamsu Abubakar, Fakhrul Anwar Zainol, Wan Norhayate Binti Wan Daud Abstract: SMEs, if fully developed, would be of benefit in alleviating poverty through wealth and job creation. Thus, developments of SMEs serve as panacea to unemployment. In a developing country like Nigeria, there are several socio-economic conditions impeding meaningful development despite many interventions and policy strategies. However, in Nigeria, SMEs face numerous problems associated with leadership and entrepreneurship. Therefore, this study is aimed to analyse the significant impact of vision, innovation, proactiveness and risk-taking on SMEs' performance in Kano, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was used in the study. SPSS 19 and AMOS software were employed to analyse the data. Structural equation modelling (SEM) version 20 was used to arrive at the results of the study. The findings of the research show that there is positive and highly significant impact of vision on SMEs performance, positive and significant impact of innovation on SMEs' performance. Lastly, the results also show negative and highly significant impact of risk-taking on SMEs' performance. The study indicates that for SMEs' organisation to succeed they must have a clear vision, innovative capacity and ability to take and manage risk. Keywords: entrepreneurial leadership; small and medium sized enterprises; SMEs; structural equation modelling; SEM; Nigeria. DOI: 10.1504/JIBED.2018.10012210
