By giving a particular attention to justice in relation to diversity and sustainability, this program is addressed through multiple form of interdisciplinary and critical analysis. We go beyond conventional studies of crime and justice, we analyze the intersection identities and power structures concerning gender, sexuality, ability, race, ethnicity, class, socioeconomic states, and citizenship status. Westminster prepares students for careers in various fields related to law. Justice Studies is interdisciplinary, diverse and pluralistic. Today, the socially contested and competitive environment in which law and justice operate requires that people entering the arena possess a solid foundation in the cultural, ethical, historical, legal, social and political aspects of Justice Studies as well as critical, analytical, and communication skills. Trough this program, students will: Exercise personal responsibility, accountability, and decision-making in the conduct of independent research and experiential learning activities such as service learning and internships. Communicate ideas, issues, and conclusions through high quality writing and oral presentations that effectively develop critical analysis arguments. Demonstrate a broad, interdisciplinary understanding of social justice and ethics through an examination of diverse theoretical perspectives and texts. Apply and critically engage with an existing body of knowledge in their examinations of new questions, problems, and issues. Comprehend and critically analyze how methods of inquiry and research techniques are used to create and interpret knowledge in social justice and ethics studies. Appreciate the complexity and inter-disciplinary nature of knowledge related to social justice and ethics, and recognize the potential contributions of the other's interpretations and methods. Justice Studies students engage with issues of justice across various disciplines, enabling them to take courses in various fields such as Communication, Economics, Environmental Studies, Gender Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Global Studies and Psychology. This interdisciplinary approach helps students understand the complex multidimensional nature of justice and why individuals, groups and institutions may or may not behave in a just manner. Since 2010, in the growing field of social justice studies our program has offered individualized academic mentoring and advanced coursework to train students in conducting research on issues of social justice and ethics. Be an effective law practitioner, activist, researcher, or teacher in our field. With the Justice Studies major there is the option to choose between two emphases: Criticial Analysis of Crime and Justice and Intersectionality of Ethnicity, Gender, and Justice. The program integrates the Justice Studies curriculum relative to issues of ethnicity and gender with justice-oriented coursework being offered in a variety of disciplines across the campus to elicit answers and solutions for those institutional practices (governmental or private) that victimize our planet and beings that live in it. Courses like Community Justice, Legislation of Morality, and Restorative Justice examine issues of justice in a critical and analytical form under the specific lenses of ethnicity, race, class, and other categories of identity. This enhanced critical-analytical focus makes the Justice Studies major even more consistent with pedagogical approaches taken in other social science disciplines such as Political Science, Global Studies, Psychology, Economics, and Environmental Studies. Public policy analysis International development Media Literacy Migration Health Community organization Violence prevention. In addition, the Justice Studies major is intended for students planning graduate study or careers in public and community service, including law, social justice, public administration, environmental protection, and urban affairs. Since the restructuring of the Justice Studies program in 2010, about half of our graduates have used the program as a springboard for further studies in law or graduate school. Given the rigorous nature of our program, the Justice Studies program helps students prepare to be successful in a wide variety of post-collegiate careers. As a result of the advantages and opportunities offered, Westminster College Justice Studies students have been admitted to the following graduate and professional programs, among others, over the past few years: University of Utah University of Iowa Northeastern University University of Oregon Arizona State University University of Virginia Gonzaga University Creighton University Pacific University University of Alaska Michigan State University Brock University (Canada) University of Wyoming Chapman University Indiana University University of Minnesota We also offer an academic minor in Justice Studies.
