Grading Policy: There will be one mid-term examination and a book review (details will be announced later) instead of second midterm exam. Of course there will be a comprehensive final examination. Midterm exam and the review will account for 25% each and final exam 50% of the final grade. You are also required to get at least 50 out of 100 in the final exam, no matter what your grades were in the two midterms. ECO 228 Economic History II Spring 2016 Syllabus
Instructor: Dr. Muammer KAYMAK URL: http://yunus.hacettepe.edu.tr/~mkaymak Content In this semester, economic history course comprises two main subjects which are closely related to each other. First part is related to the evolution of capitalist economy since industrial revolution. The second part covers the economic history of Ottoman Empire in the context of its place in world economy and its internal transformation during the 19th century. Grading Policy: Grade will be based on a midterm exam, 30%; take home assignments [book review] 20% and 50 % final exam. There will be some voluntary short exams which will be counted as bonus. To achieve this aim the active participation of students is necessary. Students are obliged to read all text given by instructor and expected to participate discussions in class. Grading Policy: There will be one mid-term examination and a book review (details will be announced later) instead of second midterm exam. Of course there will be a comprehensive final examination Midterm exam and the review will account for 25% each and final exam 50% of the final grade. You are also required to get at least 50 out of 100 in the final exam, no matter what your grades were in the two midterms. First part is related to the evolution of capitalist economy since industrial revolution. The second part covers the economic history of Ottoman Empire in the context of its place in world economy and its internal transformation during the 19th century. Probably first part will take 7 or 8 weeks. Then we are going to proceed with second part of the course. [email protected] Blog: http://iktisaditarih.blogspot.com General Information: The objective of this course is to give the student the basic knowledge and debates about economic history. To achieve this aim the active participation of students is necessary. Students are obliged to read all text given by instructor and expected to participate discussions in class. Grading Policy: There will be one mid-term examination and a book chapter or article review instead of second midterm exam. Of course there will be a comprehensive final examination (the dates of the exams are to be announced in due course). Midterm exam and the review will account for 25% each and final exam 50% of the final grade. You are also required to get at least 50 out of 100 in the final exam, no matter what your grades were in the two midterms. About Homework This semester the students of ECO 228 Economic History II (01) are obliged to visit Çengelhan Rahmi Koç Industrial Museum located at the entrance of Ankara citadel and write an report which contains their overall observations and history of an object exhibited at the museum. The report must be at least 12.000 characters. (It can be checked from Tools Menu/Word Counts for MSWord.). It is about five pages when formatted times new roman 12 pt font and 1,5 spaced. (of course without considering images that you may add.) The students must use the following template in this link. As for the object to be investigated, you may choose any of them as long as you take into account what you have learned during this semester in the course.
