9:00 → 9:30

Welcoming Remarks: Elena Parpal, Economist by profession, Labdoo Activist by passion. Jordi Ros, Founder of Labdoo.org. Jordi will make a presentation on “How did the Labdoo Story begin...”. Conference hosts: Patricia Caicedo and Montse Vivero.

9:35 → 10:00

Invited Speaker: Ralf Hamm, Head of Labdoo.org in Germany. “Using Open Source Technology to Spread Education Around the World” | Hub: https://www.labdoo.org/hub?h=431

The countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland have altogether successfully delivered laptops using CO2-neutral means to more than 300 schools around the world. Ralf will explain the path taken to achieve such a great success: from initial ideas, to the development of strategies, the grassroots operations, with the end game of delivering happy faces in many places around the planet. He will focus on describing efficient ways in which you can get your local activities started, through community outreaching, building trust and enabling all your Labdoo activities with the “zero target” funding approach.

10:05 →10:30

Invited Speaker: Jampa Latso, Student and Activist from Tibet. “The Improbable Journey of a Girl from Tibet to Reach Education” | Edoovillage: https://www.labdoo.org/edoovillage?e=27596

Born in a small tranquil village (Tsha Ra), situated in ranged snow mountains in Tibet plateau, I had been a humble student in school, an obedient daughter in the family, and a conservative Tibetan girl. The birth of a child is a miracle and its worth cannot be equated anything else. People, however, in my community prefer somehow boys to girls. Yet it is blessing that I have been able to continue navigating through the maze of the educational paradigm, experiencing diversity up until now.

10:35 → 11:00

Invited Speaker: Frank Geisler, Head of Labdoo.org in Switzerland. “Labdoo in Switzerland, there is more than cheese, chocolate and mountains: How to Start a Movement to Spread Education Around the World.” | H ub : https://www.labdoo.org/hub?h=440 Switzerland started it’s Labdoo activities in 2012. Since then the story of Labdoo has spread across the 4 language regions of Switzerland and has created great local momentum. Frank will explain how he started from scratch and what strategies he applied to steadily increase the number of laptop donations, edoovillages and supporters. He will focus on his social media activities and which technical approach the Swiss group of supporters chose to sanitize as many laptops as possible during such a short time period.

11:05 → 11:30

Invited Speaker: Ousman Umar, Student and Founder of Nasco Foundation. “From my village in Ghana to Barcelona: a Kid’s Journey to Reach Education” | Edoovillage: https://www.labdoo.org/edoovillage?e=620

Ousman Umar left Ghana at the age of 14 on a multi-year journey crossing the deserts of Africa and sailing the Atlantic ocean on a man-made boat to reach Spain in his quest for education. Today he studies at the University of Barcelona and is the President of Nasco Foundation, an organization that partners with Labdoo and many other NGOs to bring laptops loaded with education software to schools in Ghana.

11:35 → 12:00

Invited School Hub Speaker: Alejandro Rodriguez, High School Student and Head of Labdoo Hub Colegio Balder, Madrid, Spain. “‘Se hace camino al andar’: a personal journey from noble ideas to hands-on social activism” | Hub: https://www.labdoo.org/hub?h=413

Alex will give a first-person account of the 18-months journey that took him from asking "what can I do to help other children in developing countries get a better education?" to managing a labdoo school hub with 10 volunteers and 2 edoovillages in Africa. The journey includes steps such as a young social entrepreneurship contest, the initial struggle to get the hub up and running, a proposal before the school board to make the hub sustainable in the long run, the recruiting and training of other volunteers, and the avenues to increase outreach in the local community. He will provide labdooers and aspiring hub managers with clues and ideas on how to survive (and enjoy!) the journey, and will also outline some plans for the hub's future.

Labdoo Conference Barcelona 2016

Agenda - Afternoon Track 1 12:00 → 13:00

Track 2

Workshop 1: “Sanitizing a Laptop for Education,” by Labdoo Hubs Germany/Switzerland.

Workshop 2: “Programming @ schools ,” by eXplorium.

This workshop will teach you how you can convert a used laptop into great educational system. We will describe the steps required to sanitize the laptop and demonstrate some of the advanced education tools that it can deliver including packages such as Edubuntu, Offline Wikipedia, RACHEL and the various powerful Open Education Resources (OER) that come with a Labdoo laptop.

It has been almost 50 years since the apparition of educational programming. The growing number of tools makes it hard to be up-to-date. In this hands-on workshop we will discover some of these tools while trying to solve fun and interesting puzzles. Among other technologies we will work with Scratch and eSeeCode, and we will see some educational robots like Bee-Bot, Pro-Bot and Lego (WeDo). No previous experience is required. h ttp://explorium.cat/

13:00 → 14:00

Lunch time

14:00 → 15:00

Continuation of the workshops for track 1 and track 2.

15:05 → 15:30

Invited Speaker: Serena Fortuna and Graciela Andrade (from ChuayDek and Yachana-huasi NGOs) . Managers of Labdoo Hub in Rome. Monse Vivero from NGO Yachana-huasi. Core team member of Labdoo Catalonia. “From Friend to Friend: building a chain of help, food, knowledge, and IT!” | Edoovillage: https://www.labdoo.org/edoovillage?e=986

Education plays a key role for children and people in need to improve their present life have better opportunities for their future. Especially in younger age. However, it is very important that education goes hand in hand with human experience, affection, healthy food and fun. The family Buddha Kasettra School (Thailand) is giving all of this and more to students from hill tribes, who otherwise would not have access to education or even food. We are helping students in many ways and, thanks to Labdoo, we are helping them to have more interactive and visual classes as well as increase their IT education and knowledge, crucial for them to reach out for a better future.

15:35 → 16:00

International connection with Sister Zeph and her School Project in Gujranwala, Pakistan: The Right to Educate our Girls. [Online connection / video] Edoovillage: https://www.labdoo.org/edoovillage?e=25578

“Using digital tools, my girls are learning what we cannot teach them.” I live in a village of Pakistan where most girls are not allowed to get an education. Girls in my country are getting married as young as 12 years old and they have no awareness of their rights, they have no choice to speak, to take a stand for anything which they think is not correct. They are required to follow only, without asking anything. So at the age of 13 I took a stand to change this situation – I started a free school in the courtyard of my home and during the last sixteen years, I have provided education to more than 600 girls.

16:05 → 17:00

Round table discussion in connection with other Labdoo hubs around the world Session introduced by Dr. José Osuna (Presidente Club Unesco/Desarrollo Sostenible y Paz por la ONU Academy) and Dr. Jordi Ros (Labdoo.org Founder). The floor will be open for discussions where everyone will be able to express and share their stories and ideas related with the goal of spreading education and sustainability. This session will also be made in connection with other Labdoo hubs around the world via videoconferencing.

17:05 → 17:30
