Laurence E. Hartman, AIA, NCARB, CCHP Senior Designer
“I’m passionate about advancing the quality of facilities for special needs’ inmates, both in medical and mental health, through improving physical standards." Larry brings national and international experience to his projects. With a 36-year career focused on justice facilities, he has planned and designed a wide range of complex projects including major prisons, large detention centres, forensic mental health and correctional health facilities. Examples of his work include Wake County Detention Facility, Franklin County Correctional Center and a large correctional facility complex for an overseas client. Larry is a Certified Correctional Health Professional with the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. He also lends his expertise to leadership roles in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as chair of the Academy of Architecture for Justice and president of his local chapter. Through his service as chair of the American Correctional Association Facility Planning and Design Committee and on the facility task force with National Commission on Correctional Health Care, he hopes to create a better environment for medical and mental health care within secure settings. He co-authored a recent article in the AIA's Academy of Architecture for Justice Journal where he describes existing correctional standards and the importance of developing comprehensive design standards and guidelines for healthcare in correctional facilities.
