Teaching Reading English through Extensive Reading for EFL Learners Reading is one of the skills that English learners should be mastered; this skill is not only used in academic context but also for the real context. Reading can be used for scholars to get information, to know the knowledge, to understand the material, etc. Reading English as a foreign language (EFL), like Indonesian students is not as easy as reading English a mother language / first language (L1), because EFL learners are not natives like learners from L1 English countries. EFL learners have difficulties to read English textbook because of the language that used in the textbook is not as easy as other genres of books, like comic, novel, etc. In academic reading, three basics that learners need to get the meaningful reading are language competence, literacy skills and meaningful content. If we look at the first aspect, which is language competence it is needed for EFL learners in reading to get the meaningful reading. In Indonesian context, reflect to my previous experience in learning reading when I was in High School it was very hard because many vocabularies that was unfamiliar for me and I did not know the meaning of many words that was appeared in the textbook that used in English classroom.

In order to increase the ability for students to get familiar with new English vocabularies teacher can use extensive reading to help students to get familiar with several vocabularies in English that appear in the textbook. Extensive reading can be called as reading for pleasure. Although extensive reading is not specifically reading technique for academic context, teacher can adapt this technique, and teacher can bring it into classroom context especially for building their awareness, and get familiar to new vocabularies. There are some previous studies about using extensive reading in classroom context. It has shown that extensive reading had some evidences that students improve their reading by extensive reading (Pikulski & Chard, 2005; Silva, 2009; Therrien, 2004). Extensive reading appropriates to apply in EFL context for EFL learners is teaching reading, because extensive reading can be done by students not only inside the classroom but also can be done at their home with comfort situation that they can create by their own. It supported by study that have been conducted by Lee (2008) with students in Taiwan on sustained silent reading reveals that the longer students read, the better the reading results. It also strengthens the argument that extensive reading can be used as one technique in teaching reading, especially in EFL context. Teachers in EFL countries can apply this technique into their classroom for using several strategies that adapted from (Maley, 2009) to help students to build their awareness and get familiar with some unfamiliar vocabularies, such as: 1. Reading often and in a large quantity 2. Reading in a wide variety of topics and genres 3. Reading content that is interesting and compelling 4. Reading books students themselves select 5. Reading for pleasure and information 6. Reading is its own reward 7. Reading at levels appropriate for the readers 8. Reading speed is fast, not slow From those strategies that applied in Maley’s research, teacher can do some strategies to use extensive reading also to build their habit in reading. 1. Teacher can build and activate students’ schemata through set the topic first as ‘before reading’ (pre-reading) activity. 2. Students will do extensive reading in home or school or anywhere individually or by group to comprehend what the topic tells about and to connect with the topic that will be discussed in the classroom as ‘during reading’ activity. *In this step, students may use the time to write some vocabularies that they do not understand. 3. Teacher and students can do discussion together to re-build the connection of the topic and students’ knowledge, students also can use the discussion time for asking the teacher about some vocabularies that they do not understand while reading the book and after the discussion happens, teacher can assess what students have understood about the topic as ‘after reading’ activity. In conclusion, I just want to say although teaching EFL learners reading is not easy as teaching L1 learners reading, teacher can adapt and create many techniques to build students’ knowledge in reading. One of the strategies that teacher may uses is extensive reading, I believe of the quote that says “the ability comes from the habit” it shows that if reading already become a habit for students they can build their ability in reading, especially in vocabulary aspect that have been stated as a big problem of EFL learners. The Implication of Technology in Learning – Teaching Process of English

1. Introduction Technology is the one of new things in learning – teaching process for children now, especially for Junior and Senior high school students. Learning – teaching process in classroom especially for learning English is new for Indonesian schools. We make this paper that contains of several lesson plans of learning – teaching English especially for Indonesian students (Junior / Senior / Vocational High School). We make this paper after we made 6 lesson plans for learning – teaching process of English in the classroom. We made 6 lesson plans for learning – teaching English in the classroom and then we integrated our lesson plan with implication of technology in learning – teaching process. We think that is really important because now is technology era, everything uses technology in the process inside, included the learning – teaching process. 6 lesson plans that we already made are used for integrating learning – teaching process of English and using of technology in the classroom, so students can do their English project with using technology and it can be something new and not be bored for students for doing their task/assignment in form of activity that using technology inside. This paper that we made has several aims especially for English teachers, like: our lesson plans that we already made before have a new ways to teach English due to our way for integrating English with technology, beside that our lesson plans are really applicable for learning – teaching process in classroom for all Senior High/Vocational School in Indonesia, because we also integrated our lesson plans with the real curriculum that used by the school now. In the other hand, our lesson plans which are really helpful for the teacher and it can be also new ways for students for learning English. We think that students are really happy if their teachers will apply our lesson plans, because in our lesson plan we try to make an English lesson in new ways with technology as a media for them to do their task and we believe they won’t get bored because of “mainstream” method and ways for learning English, in our lesson plans is not only about paper and pencil for learning English, but in here we give new alternative solution which is technology as a media for learning English, like: students can share their writing into their social media accounts (facebook, twitter, blog, etc.), they can create their video for their speaking task using podcast and can upload into youtube and making e-book using flipsnack and many creative things using technology for learning English. 2. Body We already made 6 lesson plans about how to learn and teach English and integrating with technology in classroom. Generally, we put simple technology for making English as a subject more fun for students itself. According to Dudeney and Hockly (2007) said that English as an international language, is being used in technologically mediated context. Based on that theory we learnt if English can learn by any tools included the technology itself, for example in our lesson plan we integrate speaking skill and using in technology. In our lesson plan, for speaking task they have to make role-play, but not for an ordinary role-play they have to make a role-play and after that they have to upload their result of the assignment (role-play) into the online web, like: www.youtube.com (http://www.youtube.com/), www.teachertube.com (http://www.teachertube.com/), www.facebook.com (http://www.facebook.com/), etc. so other students and other people outside can see their project and indeed as part of students assignment to give comment, advice and anything about other students’ project and technology can be a good media for sharing between student and another student(s). We choose new way for learning – teaching English especially for students, because now students – centered learning is really good and appropriate for students with give differentiated instruction, like in our lesson plan we create our assignment mostly in group assignment and they have to create together, it is really effective for increasing their own ability like the theory In student-centered classrooms, teachers share the control while the students are allowed to explore, experiment, and discover on their own (Nunan, 1988). From that theory we see that student – centered learning can explore students’ ability especially for working in group. Example in our lesson plan: they have to make an e-book (recipe book from their hometown) after the teacher divides students into several groups based on their hometown, it can creates the environment to work in group. We think that technology can improve students’ behavior to work with their other friends, especially in context of doing English assignment, on our lesson plan we give practices that they have to do in group, like: make e-book (recipe book), recording role-play, writing article together, etc. We take a conclusion if computer technologies provide more venues for all students to be equally and actively engaged in language learning activities. Knowing how to instructionally do this within a context of project based learning, the one computer classroom, and using technology is the focus of the following section. 3. Conclusion Our lesson plans that we already made before, we think that really helpful for teachers and students especially for learning – teaching process of English in the classroom. We realize that our lesson plan is not perfect and still need improvement, but we sure that our lesson plans have strength and weaknesses, such as: Strengths 1. Our lesson plans use technology as a media for learning English for students in classroom, it will make new situation of learning can be more fun. 2. Using of technology in our lesson plans can improve students’ ability, knowledge and skill about technology as a basic competence to compete with other students from another place (country). 3. Using of technology in our lesson plans can create new and varieties ways to learn something, included English. Teachers can give material with extraordinary way and students can be happy when they learn about something with technology. Weaknesses 1. We realize if our lesson plans is applicable for some schools that have supported technology in learning – teaching English, because technology is really needed if teacher wants to apply our way and method in the lesson plans. 2. Our lesson plans good in applied of technology, but maybe is really much use technology and make the time for interaction between students and teacher are decreasing due to technology itself. We realize that our lesson plan is really need improvement for applying in school context (in the classroom) for learning – teaching English, but we sure that our lesson is really helpful students to find new way and method for learning English with technology. We sure technology can increase students’ interest in learning something included English, but we also learn about something that is very important if the teacher and students have to do interaction when the class happen and do sharing and reflection after learning – teaching process is really important, because technology is not everything in learning – teaching process technology just a media and tool for making students’ interest about English are increasing and we have to make sure if interaction and connection between teacher and students is the most important thing in learning – teaching process. Issues of Race in America and R & B Music Racism in America actually already happened since a long time ago. Actually, it happened since in early 1800 when all of the people in a world came to America included the people from African race also came to America to live there. Background for the racism itself in America started mostly from European race. The anticlimax of the issue of racism in America happened in 1955 after the accident that happened to people who had African-American blood named Rosa Parker. When she took a bus for her trip and when a people who has white skin from American/European race who wanted to get her seat and she did not want to give it to her and she had to pay a fine $10. This accident actually made most of people in America who have black skin and mostly from African race really angry about that and make civil right movements and one of the way that they used for making this movement with making, playing and singing music R&B (Rhythm and Blues) to show their solidarity for the “black” race itself. Music is the one of the way for African-American race to show anything to others about anything, included for the racism issue itself. Started in 1950’s era people -of African-American race made a new genre of music that actually from rhythm music and they modified the music itself became Rhythm and Blues (R&B) music and they wrote some lyrics that shown their feeling about racism issue that happened to them at that time. One of the song that actually express and show the feeling about racism issue that they got and it is very good and popular song came from the “King of Pop” Michael Jackson in 1987 entitled “Black or White”. The lyric of “Black or White” song is stated on the link below. Black or White lyric (http://lirik.kapanlagi.com/print/michael_jackson/black_or_white) Actually, this song has a story about the racism issue in 1980-1990 eras. In those eras, racism issue is still happened and issue about racism itself. He gave an illustration of this issue with visualization of “Gang” that show really differences between “black” and “white” itself. Jackson in this song gave an insinuation in racism problem that happened in social community in America at that time. From several articles that I read about racism issue in America, I know some facts that consist about that issue, there are: Racism is very “old” issue, it start happened in America since a long time ago. In addition, this issue is really made a big, huge and wide space between one race of people who lived in America and another race who lived in America also. From an introduction topic and the article that I write above, I write about the correlation between the racism issue and R&B (Rhythm and Blues). I really agree from the agreement that stated on the introduction of my synthesis about racism issues and R&B music as one of the ways of African-American people to show and express their feeling. R&B music also has a function to criticize some of the people who still live with condition that racism is still happen and especially to give a critic for government to erase that kind of action especially in racism action for minority people who lived there. In my opinion, R&B music is one way of African-American show and express their feeling and expression to others about the violence that they got (called: racism action) since very long time ago. Moreover, through give a critic to race or group of people who made an action to them with really “soft” way and luckily racism is not happen again in America now, due to the regulation of government that state if all of American people who live in America have an identity as a “real” American people. Obesity vs. American People in 21st Century

Obesity, one of issue that happen in America in this era. This era which is everything can be done with a simple thing and also for the development of technology that happen very fast make a people who live in this era thing that everything can be done by simple thing, included eat. Many people in the world included in America thing that with fast food life could be easier because they do not need to cook and spend their time for cooking and serving the food. Just buy a fast food and eat it. Many things that make fast food become very famous since 1940 in America, like: they can eat without cook first, they can eat fast food while they are drifting in their car they just take away their food, or even they just call a phone number of fast food’s restaurant and do delivery of fast food itself, etc. First fast food restaurant is built in southern California in early 1940s. Since that time, it has developed year by year until now, now, America has 160.000 fast food restaurant in a whole country and every day they serve 50.000.000 of request of their product that is fast food. It is very big number of request, very big number of request. American people now having a serious problem that name obesity. They have the problem because of the lifestyle that they do every day with consuming fast food as a habit of their life. American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, they are organizations that care about life and health of American people. They have been conducting a research and have published the result about the amount of American people who have a problem of obesity. Based on their research, it stated if the amount of American people who have a problem of obesity in increased year by year. Now, in 2013 they stated in their result of research if 154.7 million of American people are overweight or obese (BMI (Body Mass Index) of 25.0 kg/m2 and higher), and it consist of 79.9 million men and 74.8 million women. This is graph of amount of Adult people in America who have a problem about obesity.

(https://leefirly.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/11.jpg) American Heart Association and American Stroke Association have also found a number of children in America who have a problem with obesity. They stated in their result of the research if now in 2013 many children in America also have a problem with obesity. They stated 23.9 million children in America ages 2 to 19 are overweight or obese; 33.0% of boys and 30.4% of girls. Of these children, 12.7 million are obese; 18.6% of boys and 15.0% of girls. That number of children who have a problem of obesity significantly increased since 1970s. Like it is stated in the graphic below. It tells about how American people (children) who have a problem about obesity increase year by year. In addition it is shown amount of children form some big ethnics in America (Indian/Alaskan Native, Hispanics, non-Hispanic blacks, non-Hispanic whites and Asian/Pacific Islanders). As we can see, ethnic Indian/Alaskan Native has the biggest amount of children who have problem with obesity that is 17.7% of total amount.

(https://leefirly.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/2.jpg) I have stated the causes why obesity happens in America with big number of people (adult and children) and the recent behind that. Obesity is a one of issues in American youth because obesity has many effects that influence the youth in America in many aspects, like: 1. Health Obesity is the cause for several diseases, such as: coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon), hypertension (high blood pressure), dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides), stroke, liver and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint), gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility). If I take one case in America, number of people who have diabetes increasing year by year. Until January 2011 statistics of person who have diabetes stated if total 25.8 million children and adults in the United States and 8.3% of the population, they have and they live with diabetes. Diagnosed: 18.8 million people, undiagnosed 7.0 million people and prediabetes: 79 million people. With many people who live with diabetes, it affects America in problem, for example: people who lived with diabetes need medical cost with extra insurance money, and company should cover it because they are an employee there and it affects company does not want to accept them as their employee. If this case happen amount of unemployment people can be increased, the poverty happens, number of poverty also increased, and it can be a big problem for government in many sectors beside the health sector itself. 2. Economic In an economic sector, obesity has some effects that actually very crucial for America. It has direct effect and direct effect. Direct effect means effect that has affect economic directly and in real context. For example, if someone who has diabetes then she/he’s company has to pay more cost insurance for his/her health and it comes from his/her salary and it means that the salary of the worker is decrease because of the insurance itself and it decrease the purchase power of worker and it affect the stability of economic. FYI, in 2008 dollars, these costs totaled about $147 billion. Another effect is indirect effect. Indirect effect is an effect that have effect to another sector like youth and education. For example, if someone who has diabetes type 2 and they are limited to do an activity and it affects their society life, etc. These are two effects from obesity that actually is not only affected the patient of obesity in health effect but also it can affect another sector, like economy, education, social, etc. In America, government and also the staff do some ways to decrease the obesity, like give a socialization to the people in America about the dangerousness of obesity and the ‘domino effect’ behind that and they also give a campaign which is about the slow food movement and back again to the life style with concerning to people’s life. Now, obesity is not only a problem in America but almost in a whole world, obesity have been stated as a problem. Yet, America now is repairing the condition and fight with the caused that make obesity in their people because they realize that obesity is not only affected their people into a health problem but also can affect another problem in another sectors, such as: economy, society, youth, education, etc. So, let us move to healthy life style!!! How Indonesian Students Can Face the Barrier for Listening English

English is an International language that is used in almost all of countries in the world. It is internationally used for communication in many aspects such as academic, business, etc. Everybody in the world should be able in using English in many contexts. Listening skill is one of major four skills in English lesson that actually the learners have to master it. Since in Elementary High School, Indonesian students mostly learn English. However, in the newest Indonesian curriculum we can see if allocation time for listening in English subject is too little, just 2 hours/week. Indonesian students mostly get confused and face some barriers when they do listening. Most of the problem is the way speaker said the language with their accent and the speed when speakers do speaking is fast for students in Indonesia. Learning English in Indonesia as a foreign language is not as easy as in the country that speaks English as first language or even second language. It is because in a foreign country, mostly English just learn from academic (especially in formal/informal academic institution). In school, Indonesian learners study about English included listening. Based on our previous experience in High School, we got those difficulties that still happens until now. The difficulties in listening section for Indonesian students almost same with the theory from Underwood (1990: 16-19) that shows some potential problems that students may encounter while learning to listen to English, are: lack of control over the speed at which speakers speak, not being able to get things repeated, the listener’s limited vocabulary, failure to recognize the signal, problem of interpretation, and inability to concentrate and established learning habits. If we look at the difficulties, Indonesian students have difficulties in listening because they are not used English in communication ways just in learning and teaching process. In addition, from our experience also our English teachers in Junior and Senior High School used English just ±60% in our classroom and the rest we used Bahasa Indonesia in classroom (especially for communication). According to Goh (2002) stresses, that listening takes up as much as 50% of someone’s everyday communication time. Therefore, it means that communication through English by doing listening and speaking can increase students’ ability in listening English section. In the other way, Indonesian students also have difficulties during listening section because students getting confuse while listening happen with no more prior knowledge that they get. Brown (2006) stated listening course for English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners is a difficult task but it can be easier by activating prior knowledge, assisting students to identify the purposes for listening and using well-structured speaking tasks. Therefore, teachers have to give the prior knowledge to students before they do listening section. Here, teachers really have important role for increasing students’ ability in listening section as their facilitator, some ways that the teacher can do for increasing students’ ability in listening section, like (Underwood, 1990: 21-22) stated, are: exposing students to a range of listening experiences, making listening purposeful for the students, helping the students understand what listening entails and how they might approach it and building up students’ confidence in their own listening ability. Some tips and ways to increase students’ ability in listening section above are helpful for teacher, so after that teacher can think creatively before they do listening section for their students. Then, students can enjoy listening section as a fun process of learning English in school and for the bonus students can get good grade and make teachers proud of it. As we know, listening is the first step in natural way of learning. We start from listening – speaking – reading – writing. Listening will be the important things in learning. After we know the difficulties that happen for Indonesian students, the teacher should ask students to more practice listening English. The teacher can play an English song and/ or video in the classroom. While teaching and learning process, the teacher always speaks English for every instruction and explanation that will stimulate them in listening English even to speak in English. Besides that, the teacher must create positive atmosphere with open and warm attitudes. It will make students feel comfort and save. Then, the teacher can create ‘English’ environment both inside and outside classroom. It will help them to more practice English in each skill especially listening. They will feel comfort and do not feel strange and awkward for listening and speaking English. The most important thing for teacher is the teacher must motivate them to confident and brave to learn English in every skill. Resources: – Brown, Steven 2006. Teaching Listening.
