Why we are shallow... For decades, Filipinos have been dreaming for development in our country. Many scholars have thought of various ways to attain this Filipino dream of development. Some people believe that the key to progress in our country is nationalism. Meaning, we, Filipinos, should care for our country more than anything else and that we should change our selfish views of caring only for ourselves or for our families. Others suggest that globalization is the answer; they claim that for us to progress, we should keep in mind that we are global citizens and not just citizens of this nation. There is no doubt that ‘the perfect plan’ for our future had been laid down in paper systematically by those concerned and by the thinkers in our country. We already have a perfect theory and a perfect plan that can lead us to the path of development that all of us had been dreaming for. However, what we need are not just plans or platforms, what we need are concrete actions and the mutual initiative of the people to achieve this common goal. As a saying goes: “Life is what happens when we are busy making plans”, planning is just a part of this development. After planning on what to do, we are only half done with our project; we also need to work on it. This now brings us to what I think is a big problem for us Filipinos: we are too dependent on each other. We have not yet outgrown the idea that our parents are always there for us and we push the idea too much that we think that other people and the government would always be there to help and support us. This idea may not be entirely wrong but if we stick to it too much, progress will not be available, for instead of being interdependent with the government, we just become dependent on it to the point that we ask them to find us a decent living. And this is one of the reasons we are shallow and are still shallow throughout the years, we do not mature. This shallowness would lead us nowhere other that where we are now. Thus, if we envision development, we must eradicate it and one way to do such is through education. Education can teach people the role that the government should play where they can realize that what they are asking the government is too much. When people would be educated, they can know their rights and also their responsibilities. These, coupled with a good leadership from the part of the government can make us a great nation. Through education, we can improve massively, if we use it on the right way. We must adhere to the idea of Rizal that education can solve a lot of the problems of a nation and basing from statistics, many of us are not given the right to education. And come to think of it as a right, the more that we should realize that it is an important tool for us to achieve the success and the development that we have been long waiting for. What we need is only the proper exercise of power, similar to the early days of Marcos where power was used in the right way. Through the proper use of power, one can do a lot of things, including educating the poor as a means in building a nation of individuals who knows their rights as well as the responsibilities that they should play in nation building. When that time would come, then we would not ask “Why are we shallow?”

Note: This article is made based on the article of Sionil Jose: Why we are shallow. However, no part of his work was copied or quoted in this text except the title. The author aims here to look at another angle of why Filipinos can be shallow other than the one seen by Jose in his article. Ipinaskil ni Lightning Thief sa 4:15 PM
