n behalf of everyone involved in the planning for our Year of Celebration commemorating Long Beach Day Nursery’s 100 years of serving young children in Greater Long Beach, we proudly unveil our 100th anniversary logo. And a great 100 years it has been! We’ve recapped some of the world’s history from 1912 to the present in earlier publications, but in light of the fact that through it all we are going strong, we’d like to add a few more milestones of a positive nature: We’ve seen the inventions of television, computers, the Internet, digital everything and most notably, our ability to put a man on the moon, inhabit a space station, explore outer space and launch satellites that have revolutionized communications technology beyond the wildest dreams of the handful of prominent Long Beach women who saw the growing need for quality child care in 1912

and launched Long Beach Day Nursery! We dedicate our Year of Celebration to these forwardthinking women whose foresight, commitment and generosity have made a difference in the lives of literally thousands of children over the nearly 100 years so far. Their legacy into the future is immeasurable. LBDN would also like to introduce our supporters to the wonderful committee chairs who have stepped forward to help plan all of the 2012 festivities. With the leadership of each and every one of them, it will be a year to remember. Message from the Executive Director

D

ear Friends: It’s that time of year again when many of the problems of the world seem to be set aside for a while as we celebrate the holidays with friends and family. It is an especially happy time at the Nursery Patrice Wong because Room 3 at our West Branch is once again filled with little ones. During the state budget impasse we did not enroll new students when 62 transitioned to kindergarten. As a result, we were forced to close Room 3, downsize our teaching staff and move some teachers and children to other classrooms at both branches. As I passed by the empty room every morning, I felt such a sense of sadness. But I’m happy to report, that’s all in the past as we move forward into 2011 with a renewed sense of optimism. Room 3 is full of happy children again and we’ve been able to hire the teachers we need to provide the quality care LBDN is known for. To me, there is something magical about the new year. For the Nursery, it brings us one year closer to our 100th anniversary, truly a milestone. Each day, our plans for the year of celebration are being solidified with the commitment and hard work of our wonderful committee chairs and their helpers as outlined in our cover

story. Each and every one of them is a special gift to the Nursery and their efforts will help us lay the foundation for our next 100 years. It’s an exciting time for all of us. If anyone is interested in joining one of the committees, please contact Eileen Factor at 562-5910509 or [email protected]. We appreciate any and all help and input from those who have supported us over the years. And, we have several key sponsorship opportunities available, too. In closing, I want to thank the Rotary Club of Long Beach and the Christmas Store, organized by Long Beach First Lady Nancy Foster, the First Congregational Church, the Long Beach Rescue Mission and Better Balance for Long Beach. Because of them, 19 of our low-income families will have a brighter holiday season – and so many more low-income and poverty level families in our community will, too! Sincerely, Patrice Wong, Executive Director

Message from the Chair Dearest Friends of Long Beach Day Nursery: Please consider this message a warm holiday wish to you and your family. It is this time of year that I like to reflect on the things I am thankful for and plan for the year ahead. I am very grateful that the Long Beach Day Nursery has been serving the working families of Long Beach for almost 100 years, since November 4, 1912 to be exact. In fact, the Long Beach Day Nursery has the distinction of being the oldest, continuously licensed private social welfare agency in California and serves approximately 325 children annually at two branch locations. I want to thank each of our teachers, support staff, senior staff and fellow board members for their work each day to provide a safe environment in which each child learns and prepares for kindergarten. The children enjoy healthy, nutritious meals – for some of our children, these are the only meals or hot meals they get each day – Long Beach Day Nursery

and well-trained teachers who deliver a stimulating curriculum. I can't think of a better investment in our community than preparing the minds of our youngsters to learn, play well and get along with their peers. Thank you to our parents for allowing us to be a part of your child's young life. And last but most definitely not least, THANK YOU to ALL our generous donors. Because of you, we are able to do the good work we do here at Long Beach Day Nursery. Happy Holidays!

2011 Tea for Tots Honorees Selected

W

e are pleased to announce that former California Governor George Deukmejian and wife Gloria will be the 2011 Tea for Tots honorees. They have both given much to our community and to the entire state of California and we are proud to be able to honor them at our Tea for Tots event May 21 at the Long Beach Yacht Club. Prior to his term as governor (1983-1991), George served for four years as the state’s attorney general, 12 years as a state senator and four years in the state assembly, representing Long Beach and the surrounding communities. His tenure as governor was highlighted by policies which established a positive business climate in the state. As a result, California led Gloria and the Hon. George Deukmejian the nation in major new business expansions, growth in small businesses, and nearly three million new jobs were created with California becoming one of the 10 largest economies. He has served on the governing boards of the California Chamber of Commerce and Criminal Justice Legal Foundation, to name a few. Currently, he serves on the boards of the Economic Development Corporation of Los Angeles, the Southern California Leadership Council and the California Science Center Foundation. While raising three children, Gloria began a long volunteer career by participating in many community outreach programs, most of which involved children, including the PTA, Girl Scouts, Campfire, Jonathan Jacques Children’s Cancer Center/LB Memorial, Steel Magnolias, St. Mary Hospital (volunteer) and Assistance League of both Long Beach and Sacramento. She currently serves on the St. Mary Hospital Board of Trustees and Rancho Los Alamitos Foundation Board. As first lady, she sought to recognize the commitment of volunteers by organizing a statewide awards program to recognize outstanding volunteer achievement for Volunteer Centers of California. Gloria and George continue to give their time to many community programs, most notably CSULB Disabled Student Services and LBDN’s Stepping Stones to Success Scholarships which provides scholarships to working families who do not qualify for state subsidies, but do not earn enough to pay full LBDN fees. Gloria is an LBDN honorary board member, having served on the board from 1995 to 2003. And, we are very proud that she has agreed to chair our 100th Anniversary Tea in 2012. Editors note: Due to space limitations, the above is but a snapshot of the numerous contributions the Deukmejians have made to our community specifically and to our state as a whole.

Fall Feast for Our Families Each year, both the East and West branches of Long Beach Day Nursery host a Fall Feast luncheon where our little ones can invite their parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents – whoever is important in their lives. LBDN provides the turkey that is donated by board members and other supporters. Along with the turkeys, our cooks prepare all the trimmings, and families are encouraged to bring a dish that represents their culture, heritage and/or family tradition. It’s a great way for parents and other family members to share a special occasion with the children, and also gives them a chance to interact with other families. (Continued on page 6) Board members Joan Alderson and Julie Taboada (rear) serve the children and their families. Clockwise, Marina Sandoval with sons Richard and Oscar Tapia, Sahmiyah Holifield, Sean Valera, Myrna Santibanez, Jazary Hernandez and Priscilla Villarino.

Building Blocks: Leaving a Legacy to LBDN

L

ong Beach Day Nursery has received bequests from faithful supporters throughout its long history with each and every gift contributing to the Nursery’s ongoing viability. As a matter of fact, four supporters from the distant past surfaced when we were researching our history for the 100th anniversary planning. They are Elsie Faris, Lois Fischer, Rocco Gallo and Mary J. Remmers. We now have 58 Building Blocks members as we march toward our goal of 100 bequests by 2012. Won’t you help us reach our goal of 100 planned gifts by our 100th anniversary in 2012? We are over half way there! Vineet Agrawalla & Benjamin Turnour

Stepping Stones to Success

F

riends, family and supporters of the Nursery gathered on October 5 at the beautiful home of Deloris and Sandy Mayuga to recognize the 2010-2011 Stepping Stones to Success Scholarship campaign co-chairs, Meg and Charlie Westlund. “We were thrilled with the turnout and very grateful to the Mayugas for hosting the reception once again this year,” said Brian Russell, chairman of the board. “I want to thank the board Guests, led by Brian Russell and Patrice Wong, acknowledge Meg members who prepared the delicious food and supplied the (seated) and Charlie Westlund at Stepping Stones reception. beverages, as well,” he added. “And last but not least, I want to thank the Westlunds for their leadership in making this campaign very successful.” Stepping Stones to Success scholarship program helps to remove the financial barriers that families experience in obtaining quality early care and education for their children. The scholarships are designed to assist families earning between 75% and 100% of the state median income. This targets a gap that public (state) subsidies do not address – the working poor. This very special program was founded by honorary board member Barbara Gebb in the wake of the 1992 Civil Unrest in Los Angeles and Long Beach. And today, these scholarships are more important than ever due to the current economic situation and the threat to funding, given the state’s ongoing budget crises. “The goal for this year is $125,000,” said Patrice Wong, LBDN executive director. “We’ve already raised close to $104,000 so we are confident we will meet this goal, thanks in great part to Meg and Charlie,” she added. Meg Westlund is an honorary board member, having served for nine years on the board from 1997 to 2006.

Meet our new Board Members Since our Annual Meeting in June, two more people have joined our board of directors: Theresa Landers, executive director, Crisell & Associates, Certified Public Accountants; and returning board member, Kathy Wade, owner of Kathryn Wade Fine Framing. Kathy was on the LBDN board from 2000-2003. Welcome to our board and thank you! L to R: Theresa Landers and Kathy Wade.
