“Your Student Activity Fee at Work!”

Lupe Fiasco

Born and raised on the west side of Chicago, Illinois, Wasalu Muhammad Jaco (stage name “Lupe Fiasco”) has become a hip-hop legend. In 2004 he signed with Atlantic Records and began recording his debut album “Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor.” His big break came when he joined with Kanye West to record the song “Touch the Sky.” Soon after, Lupe released his first single “Kick Push, ”inspired by his skateboarding hobby. The album was produced by friend and mentor Jay-Z, and when the album was released in September of 2006, it was an instant hit. Other hits from this album are “I Gotcha” and “Daydreamin” featuring Jill Scott. In 2006, Lupe received three Grammy nominations (for “Food and Liquor”) for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Solo Performance, and Best Rap Song for “Kick Push.” In addition, he received three BET Hip Hop Award nominations, and was named GQ’s “Breakout Man of the Year.” In 2008, he received a Grammy for Best Urban/ Alternative Performance for “Daydreamin”. His second album “Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool” was released on December 17, 2007. From this album came the track “Superstar” featuring Matthew Santos. In 2008, Lupe joined Kanye West’s “Glow in the Dark” tour (which also features Rihanna and N.E.R.D.). Lupe has hinted that he might not continue to perform as a solo act. He recorded “US Placers” with Kanye West and Pharrel (featuring Thom Yorke). The three have named them selves “Child Rebel Soldiers.” Since the release of this song, they have not announced any future plans. Tickets for the Lupe Fiasco concert (September 20, 2008) are now on sale at Copies Plus (in the Campus Center near the SA office) for $10. Doors open at 7:30 pm and the concert starts at 9 pm. News from SA From the President: Dear Students,

Dan Truchan Public Policy and Management Class of 2009

It is my pleasure to welcome you all back to campus. I am excited about all that is going to be happening this year. Your SA E-board that both the Vice President and I have hired are outstanding and exceeding our expectations already. Please note that if you are involved in a student group that is funded by Student Association, there is a mandatory meeting on September 16th (at Alumni House). If your student groups name begins with the letter A-M then you are going to be attending the meeting from 7-8pm and if your groups name begins with N-Z then you are assigned to the 8-9pm meeting. I am also happy to announce that the Programming office is hard at work to make sure that events on campus that you want to see will happen, so please make it a point to stop by the SA office or shoot us an e-mail regarding what you would like to see. Again it is my pleasure to serve as your President of the Student Association. I wish you all the best of luck with your classes. If you have any questions or problems, do not hesitate to stop by and ask for help. My door is always open.

From the Senate Chair:

Welcome back to the University at Albany! My name is Joshua Sussman and I have the distinct honor of serving as the Student Association’s Senate Chairman. The Senate passes legislation that governs the internal workings of the Student Association as well as Student Groups. The Student Association Senate is made up for four committees. Appropriations (which allocates additional funds to Student groups), University Outreach (works with groups and their Senate liaisons and Residential Life), Rules and Operations (committee for internal control and monitoring), and Governmental Affairs (works with the governing bodies of the University). This year, I am proud to say we have a fully functioning and updated website. The Senate’s agenda and all current legislation will be available on the website the Monday of every meeting week. On the site you will also be able to find the office hours of myself and Vice Chair Leah Rotella, as well as the committee meeting times. The website is: http://www.albany.edu/sasenate/ If you are interested in running for senate (as stated throughout this issue of SA Insider) you can come to the SA Office located in Campus Center 116 and pick up a self nomination form. These forms have been available since the start of school and will be due by Wednesday September 10th, at 4:55 in the Student Association office. I look forward to working for our campus and student body this year. Student Association Senate meetings are Wednesdays at 8 PM in the Assembly Hall. Please don’t forget to check our new website for updates, and remember my door is always open.

Dick (Kurtwood Smith “That 70’s Show”), a stern judge, and his wife, Angela (Nancy Lenehan “My Name is Earl”), are protective of their daughter, and are really trying to let go of the anger they feel towards Sam... after all, disaster follows whenever he visits their house. But despite his best efforts, every time Sam takes one positive step forward in winning over his future in-laws, he inevitably takes two crushing steps back. But with support and love from Melanie who stands up for him despite his knack for making himself look bad, Sam will hopefully charm his way into her family. During a bachelorette party for her sister Daphne, Bella learns from the psychic that she must revisit her past relationships and sort through the mistakes to find her soul mate. Skeptical, Bella begins to analyze every past liaison and failed romance with her close circle of friends: Augie, an endearing guy who has listened to Bella’s love woes since college; Vivian, Augie’s long-term girlfriend; and Cyrus, who’s chronically unemployed and full of wry observations. Once Bella witnesses proof of the psychic’s other predictions, her cynicism disappears and she begins her search. Project S.H.A.P.E.’s “Sex Talk: Just Say K now!” This is a Q and A column written by members of the Project SHAPE: Sexual Health & Peer Education program that answer your questions about sexuality and sexual health. All questions are reviewed by a credentialed sexuality educator, Carol Stenger, who is the founder and Director of Project SHAPE in the University Counseling Center. To contact us, please e-mail your questions or comments to cstenger@uamail. albany.edu. We look forward to hearing from you! Q: My boyfriend doesn’t like using condoms because he says it takes away the good sensations. Any suggestions? A: Some men do report that this is the case. Some slang terms like “raincoat” and “cover” might perpetuate the concerns that condoms decrease sensitivity during sexual intercourse. However, there is plenty of sensation that can be felt through a thin layer of latex. In addition, sensation can be increased by putting a few drops of water based lubricant into the tip of the condom before rolling it on, even if the condom is already lubricated. Men who do this have reported that it feels much more like the way it feels when a condom is not used. So men who do this are also more likely to use condoms consistently. The important thing to remember is that condoms are essential in practicing safer sex and preventing the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Sex that is safe is much more likely to be pleasurable, both in the moment and afterwards. So stick to your guns- say “its safe sex or no sex.” Which do you think is the more pleasurable choice for him? Q: Do you always need to have symptoms to be tested for STD’s? A: No! With sexually transmitted infections, many people are symptom free. For example, in the case of gonorrhea, 80% of women will not develop noticeable symptoms, although most men will, 95% in fact. With Chlamydia, 50% of men and 75% of women will not get symptoms. Both of these are bacterial infections so are curable with antibiotics, yet many people don’t know they have them and are then subject to long term effects like infertility because they weren’t treated. So what can people do to protect themselves? If you are sexually active which includes all forms of sexual activity including oral sex which can spread STIs, get tested for STIs annually. And women need to know that merely getting an annual pelvic exam/pap smear DOES NOT mean you were tested for STIs! You have to request that. **Project SHAPE is a group of 40 student volunteers who offer over 125 educational programs on sexuality and sexual health for the University community each year. Volunteers take a training course on sexuality and health. To request a program or if you are interested in getting involved, please write to us at the address above or call the University Counseling Center at 518-442-5800 and ask for Project SHAPE!
